Generational Divide Among Evangelicals Shakes Prominent Seminary
Dr. Patterson’s dramatic exit convulsed the Southern Baptist Convention, turning the school into a nexus of the continuing debate over women’s role in the church.

Karen Swallow Prior, a Southern Baptist professor at Liberty University, said Dr. Patterson’s ouster was a step toward changing “the misogynistic, sexist culture of the SBC.” She added that there is “a dramatic shift” among younger evangelicals who are more eager “to embrace the idea of women as leaders, both in the church and in the culture.”

Others saw Dr. Patterson’s ouster as an ideologically-motivated takedown.

“The previous generation, their priority was missions and evangelism and preaching,” said Rev. Wayne Dickard, a former Southwestern trustee. The new generation, he said, “is far more interested in the social justice movement.” ...

Thanks,'Adriel' for posting since it gives me a chance to correct my last post.

I meant to say that 1 Timothy 5 is NOT limited to Paul's time only.

I think many Christians and the churches they attend do not want to face up to the fact that the world is not our friend. The world is not in favor of anything in the Bible. Remember Paul says it is foolishness in the eyes of the wise of this day.
People who follow the Bible cannot pick and choose which verses apply to them. When they read I Timothy 5 and look at the world, they see a 'Disconnect' where a granny like Nancy Pelosi is not at home taking care of her grandchildren, but trying to lead the US House of Representatives! This is madness. And she is probably harming herself with all the botox injections she has had to keep her face 'presentable.'

""The new generation, he said, “is far more interested in the social justice movement.”"

But it is not social "justice" is it?

What we see today is the Liberalist ideology of the rejection of traditional values and standards.

The younger generation did not see the old ways in action as the standard philosophy. They are too young to have seen traditional moral standards as the way of community life.

What the modern generation believe today is that, 'Women were previously oppressed and subjugated.'

Modern thinking seeks a more "inclusive" society with all genders equal and allowed to follow their own ambitions in the community.
Thus for example the role of wife is changed to be a 'working' mother.

The patriarchal ideology is repudiated so that the poor little female can have more parity and equality.

Trouble is what the feminists and other Liberalists fight for is a 'matriarchal' society. Female power over everything whether work or family.

Many men see this as realistic and acceptable not realizing that it is changing the essential nature of male and female.

1Cor 11:3 But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God." (Also Gen 3:16)

I could not read the entire article because I am not a subscriber to WSJ.com.
And I have not heard about this turmoil in the SBC on my local news or on any other email news source. Maybe someone could identify another source like Fox or CNS News or even WND.
It's similar to the controversy over the Bachlorette TV program, where the 'deeply committed' Christian woman said she would have intimate relations (i.e, "Adam knew Eve and she conceived a son") with one of the cute bachelors pursuing her on the show, and on of the 'deeply committed' Christian bachelors said much the same thing.
What is happening is that churches today do not teach the entire Bible; they pick and choose a few central verses and then use worldly concepts to run the rest of their business.
Do they preach the Guidelines for Older Christian Women as detailed in 1 Timothy 5? No, they probably pass it by, say it was only for Paul's age, like Paul telling Timothy later in the same letter to drink wine for his stomach. How many Christian alcoholics have grabbed onto that verse for dear life!
As I see it, 1 Timothy 5 is limited to Paul's age only, but is a 'tip of an iceberg' of how Paul, and thus, God (if we believe the Bible is the Word of God) wants society to be organized.

Good insight, and something I see in other kinds of church conduct as well. Example: We are to be Oh-so-careful about the music we listen to (no CCM or rock), yet sing trad. hymns with dubious doctrine.

S.S. is an example of "Mission Creep" - Robert Raikes wanted to teach Gloucester slum kids basic literacy using the Bible. Hard to argue with that, but then its clientele broadened. Good intentions...

The Amish debated it in the late 19th century, and finally rejected it.

If women aren't to be church leaders, as supposedly "misogynist" SBC conservatives believe, then why do countless conservative Baptists expect or allow women to teach in Sunday Schools, despite no Biblical evidence of such a church role? Teaching and authority are inseparable, as the N.T. makes clear.
When a boy grows up being taught by women in S.S., why should we be surprised if he later supports women pastors?
Many years ago I got into a really negative argument with some on SA because I maintained that women should not be able to teach other women or children.

IMO, what the church has done is compartmentalize the feminist issue where they say it is okay in one instance, but not in another. What they do is take a "general truth" and find a possible exception to that and then that exception becomes the truth. Examples; yes they can teach their own children and they can teach younger women how to be good wives and mothers.

I guess what I am saying is the church has spread feminism, but just in a different way. I will not discuss this issue on the forum, but will do so in private.

Anyway, Neil, good questions.

“The idea of women as leaders” is one that God Himself came up with. They are to be leaders of their children and leaders of younger women—but not leaders of men. If that rubs you the wrong way, I suggest you turn around.

What an ungodly mess this is. God's WORD Is now being delegated to the "back seat," being replaced, instead, by the OPINIONS of man.
