Intense Hong Kong clashes ahead of China's 70th anniversary
Fierce clashes broke out between protesters and riot police in Hong Kong on Sunday as thousands marched through the strife-torn city, during a day of global protests aimed at casting a shadow over communist China's upcoming 70th birthday.

Beijing is preparing for huge, tightly-choreographed festivities from Tuesday to mark the founding of the People's Republic of China, including a huge military parade that will revel in the country's emergence as a global superpower.

But ongoing unrest in Hong Kong threatens to upstage those celebrations as the semi-autonomous city boils with public anger over the erosion of its special freedoms under Beijing's rule. ...

It is easy to confuse Hong Kong Chinese with the Mainland Chinese, which was done in previous post about an underground Christian movement.
The 2 are very different groups, like dcomparing Cubans who have arrived recently with those who have lived in the South Florida area for the past 50 years.

Sure, there may be some "Cuban Solidarity" but the older Cubans know they will never get back the country they left in the same conditions it was in when they left it.

As a matter of fact, you could not go back to Chicago, Kansas City, Peoria, or Spring Hill and not cry about how it has changed in the past 50 years.

In addition, Hong Kong Chinese even speak Chinese differently than the Mainland Chinese (not that anyone here would notice that, but if you listen to John Derbyshire's podcasts, you would). There is even a note of 'racism' between the 2 groups, according to John's recent podcast.
I do think it is ironic that the Chinese authorities want to outlaw the use of face masks, since as we all know, 'they all look alike to me'
which makes me think the hardest job in the world is to be a police detective in China--how hard would it be to tell one guy from another?

Do you remember the news item here at SA last month about how the protesters were singing hymns? It made you think that there was a strong Christian element to the protest.
Therefore, with this news story, we can throw the other one in the trash, saying it is only a case of wishful thinking.

Verse 36. My kingdom, &c. The charge on which Jesus was arraigned was that of laying claim to the office of a king. He here substantially admits that he did claim to be a king, but not in the sense in which the Jews understood it. They charged him with attempting to set up an earthly kingdom, and of exciting sedition against Caesar. In reply to this, Jesus says that his kingdom is not of this world--that is, it is not of the same nature as earthly kingdoms. It was not originated for the same purpose, or conducted on the same plan. He immediately adds a circumstance in which they differ. The kingdoms of the world are defended by arms; they maintain armies and engage in wars. If the kingdom of Jesus had been of this kind, he would have excited the multitudes that followed him to prepare for battle. He would have armed the hosts that attended him to Jerusalem. He would not have been alone and unarmed in the garden of Gethsemane. But though he was a king, yet his dominion was over the heart, subduing evil passions and corrupt desires, and bringing the soul to the love of peace and unity....

I have to agree, Jim. I cannot imagine having to live under the rule of the Progressive Oligarchy, run by Amazon, Google, and Facebook and administered by the Democratic Party. Look at the nonsense they are already engaged within!

As for the protesters in Hong Kong, they face long odds from the human standpoint. But the Lord is bigger and ultimately His will is what is done.

• Police officers fired tear gas and used water cannons to push back protesters who threw gas bombs, bricks and other objects at authorities
• Officers have reported that some protesters also attacked police with corrosive fluid....

While officers have previously fired warning shots in the air on multiple occasions during Hong Kong's months-long anti-government protests, this is the first time a protester is known to have been shot....

The article is informative and an interesting read. One wonders, however, if the continuing violence well turn Hong Kong into something like the Warsaw ghetto of World War II? ❗👎

Again the people Hong Kong better keep their British passports handy.
