Japan temple puts faith in robot priest
A 400-year-old temple in Japan is attempting to hot-wire interest in Buddhism with a robotic priest it believes will change the face of the religion -- despite critics comparing the android to "Frankenstein's monster."

The android Kannon, based on the Buddhist deity of mercy, preaches sermons at Kodaiji temple in Kyoto, and its human colleagues predict that with artificial intelligence it could one day acquire unlimited wisdom.

"This robot will never die, it will just keep updating itself and evolving," priest Tensho Goto told AFP. ...

Yes, Japan is a hard nut to crack. There are very few Christians there. The Catholics sent missionaries from Mexico (in Cuernavaca's Cathedral, there is a mural about them), converted some, but then they went 'underground' and I think I saw a TV program or movie some famous Hollywood director (Coppola? Scorsese?) made about these 'hidden Catholics.'
The loss of 3 million people in WW2 acts like a 'setback' for any population growth, just like the millions aborted in the US since Roe vs Wade has affected Social Security, federal taxes, etc.
Japan reminds me of the Shaker sect, very smart people, good furniture makers, but missing out on the basic Facts of Life.
All of this brings us back to what is the function of the church, as related by Paul in his first letter to Timothy, chapter 5, where he talks about the care of widows. Most churches might skip this as just a cultural point that they set aside. I think it demonstrates God's Will for Older Women. First, they are married and are part of a family. When their husband dies, they should be taken care of by that family. If that family cannot do it, then they must meet certain 'work requirements' before the church provides aid. It sounds harsh, but there it is. Paul calls it, 'before they are put on the list'

Japan has had several generations to replace its wartime deaths. Furthermore, their press articles on the subject focus on falling birthrates, not the War, as a cause:

So why falling birthrates? Something's broken in their modern culture. Some say women are delaying marriage, if they marry at all. Or maybe men spend too much time partying at hostess bars after work.

Coin-op, robot religion is completely understandable in Japanese philosophy.

Very ironic news! After losing more than 3 million people from World War 2, the end of which they are commemorating today August 15, you think they would be smart enough to know that a Major Policy Change would have to be enacted--to repopulate the country. Russia has noticed this and started giving more $$ to larger families. In Japan, they have many issues, but the bottom line is that each year there are less Japanese alive. Soon, they will get to the point where none of the women will be young enough to bear children.

A robot was the Democratic candidate for president in the 2016 election. Last we heard she had evolved into a garbage disposal.

They should use robots for Catholic priests the one in the article can't get into any sexual difficulties anyway (The Scandal of the Catholic Priesthood).
