U.S. lawmakers weighed reforming pot laws in what advocates called a “historic” hearing Wednesday, with numerous members of Congress saying they wanted to loosen federal laws, even legalize marijuana.

“Marijuana decriminalization may be one of the very few issues upon which bipartisan agreement can still be reached in this session,” said Rep. Tom McClintock, R-Calif., adding “it ought to be crystal clear to everyone that our laws have not accomplished their goals.”

Eleven states have legalized adult recreational use and a majority of Americans support legalization. A number of bills are on the table that would reform federal marijuana laws. The House Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism and Homeland Security sought input on how to reform federal laws in a hearing Wednesday titled “Marijuana Laws in America: Racial Justice and the Need for Reform.” ...

I guess spineless politicians are not a recent development, Adriel. During World War II one of the famous Merrill’s Marauders complained of American politicians “intimidated by frustrated, middle-aged females.”

That's strange Tim, Our politicians over here are brainless and spineless too. Must be a common trait in politicians.

One thing is for sure we get lots of politics but zero leadership.
Sycophancy sounds about right.

A stoned society is easier to manipulate. Besides, our employees of the US gov don't like it when States decide things without their input.

"Marijuana is one of the most popular drugs on the market today. While it may have the impression of being a harmless, fun substance, it is still a drug that changes what goes on in the mind, sometimes with significant consequences. The long-term effects on the brain and body make marijuana a dangerous drug to a lot of people, leading to negative outcomes that don’t show until years later."

It would be much more civilised if society did NOT encourage drugs and their adverse, possibly dangerous effects.

Trying to defend pot is like trying to defend tobacco. Just because it exists, doesn't mean that we need to ingest or smoke it.
People who have behavioral problems already have the cure like the rest of us with our sin problems- Jesus.

God created poison ivy, poison oak, poisonwood trees for something, too.
Arsenic is 100 percent organic when it is found in the seeds of apples.
The usual argument for legalizing MJ is for medical uses, but then, the next thing you know, it has exploded into all kinds of channels.
Medical reasons are the cause of this nation's Great Opioid Crisis. 'Pill mills' are doctors who operate clinics that prescribe hundreds if not thousands of these drugs.
Even your own Primary Care Physician is in on this business; you only need to ask him or her how much $$ he makes on every prescription he gives out.

I would like to hear from the insurance industry on this issue. Do people in those 11 states have to pay higher car insurance bills because there is a greater chance of them running into a driver 'under the influence'? And do they pay higher home insurance bills because some homeowners might set their houses on fire when they are smoking the Devil's Weed?

Laughing your way into hell is not the most sensible to do. I almost accomplished it, and but for God's grace would be there now. I cannot but speak of what the merciful God has done for me - praise his name!
