Can prayers keep hurricanes away?
Kay Thomas knows she can’t do much when a hurricane is approaching the Florida Keys.

She can stock up on supplies, evacuate from the island chain, or ride it out like she did during 2017’s Hurricane Irma — which spared her hometown of Key West but severely damaged Keys neighborhoods to the north.

But there is one thing she does at the start of each hurricane season: pray.

“That’s about the best I can do,” Thomas said. “I feel better even though I know that just me alone, I’m not moving mountains.” ...

@Douglas, of course there are Christian baseball players, haven’t you watched the documentary called Angels in the Outfield?

The first comment here about changing the title of the article to talk about superstitions reminds me of baseball and sports in general. The same question--does God answers the prayers of one team to win the game? Is he now on the side of Toronto to win the NBA championship? Baseball players are famously superstitious, so much so that you wonder if there can even be a Christian baseball player.

"• God’s providential direction as an unseen, behind the scenes, primary cause should not lead us to denying the reality of our choices and actions. Scripture affirms that we really do cause events to happen. We are significant and responsible. We do have choices and these are real choices that bring about real results. Just as God has created water with the property of wetness, so God has made us with the property of willing choice. [Grudem, p.321]

• God causes all things that happen but he does so in a way that he somehow upholds our ability to make willing, responsible choices, choices that have real and eternal results and for which we are accountable. Exactly how God combines his providential control with our willing and significant choices scripture does not tell us. [Grudem, p.321]"

• We cannot say that our choices are not determined in someway by God because of the number of passages which affirm the providential control of God. There would be the formidable difficult of how to reinterpret passages which suggest God is not providentially in control. We need to be faithful to the teaching of scripture, rather than deny God’s providence or the reality of human choice. [Grudem, p.321]"

Interesting question, John. Was my grandfather out of the will of God when he left Italy for the US? Am I then out of his will for staying here? Are all who move someplace other than where they were born out of his will? Were you born in Wales? The question kind of depends on what you mean by move out of his will, I think.
God bless you, Mike. Off the top of my head I would answer you:
1. Not necessarily
2. Not necessarily
3. Not necessarily
4. No, I was born in Leicestershire, England

However, whatever will you do if you are living in a "hurricane valley" or "beneath an active volcano", and you are convinced the Lord would have you there, by his set will and purpose; and so you choose to serve the Lord in that place and remain in his will and grace, receiving his blessings? Would you then pray for safety from hurricanes? Or for the Lord to change the direction of the hurricanes? Or for the Lord to keep the volcano quiet?

It's one for the predestination theologians, eh Mike?

Or do we simply need more faith to do things as difficult as moving a mountain?

Mike, do you believe it is possible to "move" out of the will of God?

Acts 17:26 (Barnes)

[And the bounds of their habitation - Their limits and boundaries as a people. By customs, laws, inclinations, and habits he has fixed the boundaries of their habitations, and disposed them to dwell there. We may learn:
(1) That the revolutions and changes of nations are under the direction of infinite wisdom;
(2) That people should not be restless and dissatisfied with the place where God has located them;
(3) That God has given sufficient limits to all, so that it is not needful to invade others; and,
(4) That wars of conquest are evil.
God has given to people their places of abode, and we have no right to disturb those abodes, or to attempt to displace them in a violent manner. This strain of remark by the apostle was also opposed to all the notions of the Epicurean philosophers, and yet so obviously true and just that they could not gainsay or resist it.]

Mike, do you believe it is possible to "move" out of the will of God?

The Earth is under the curse as well as the people on it. Start with that understanding. People generally live where they wish to live. If you live where hurricanes are the norm, you could be hurt by hurricanes. Instead of thinking some vague spirituality will keep you from the harm that could come from the choice you made to live where that harm is more likely, is it possible that moving elsewhere would work better?

I don't believe so, Bro US.

But effectual, fervent prayer might.

James 5:16-18 KJV
(16)  Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.
(17)  Elias was a man subject to like passions as we are, and he prayed earnestly that it might not rain: and it rained not on the earth by the space of three years and six months.
(18)  And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain, and the earth brought forth her fruit.
