Suicide spikes among girls
A troubling spike in the suicide rate among girls is prompting leading researchers to question the role of social media in adolescent mental health.

A study published Friday in the JAMA Open Network led by Donna Ruch, a research scientist at Nationwide Children's Hospital, analyzed suicide trends in 10- to 19-year-olds between 1975 and 2016. The rate of suicide decreased from the early 1990s until 2007, but has increased in years since for both genders. While boys die by suicide at a higher overall rate than girls, female youth suicides have surged most in recent years. In the 10- to 14-year-old age group, the rate of suicide increased by 12.7 percent for girls and 7.1 percent for boys since 2007. ...

Excellent point, Wayfarer. Social media is its own cesspool, and certainly can't say it does not have an bad influence.

This subject is not covered often by the media because there is some kind of pact between the media and 'the authorities' so that cases are not covered.
They also use a lot of euphemisms to avoid calling an act a suicide. "Death by his own hand" is one way, and in cases of trains hitting people, it is hard to know if the pedestrian was 'under the influence' or pushed by someone who ran away from the scene, so cannot be identified.
All of this is to hide the real danger of suicide--that it is contagious, and many people who see Person X kill themselves by taking A or B, or jumping in front of a train, or going to Bridge C over River D, will say, Hey, I never thought of that! I'll have to give it a try!

Good commentary QC.
Though I would say that redeemed Christians do run back to their own vomit with regards to social media, and the adoration of all things popular to the culture.
One would be best to think on things of good value , the fellowship of the saints and of the pleasures of holiness far more wonderful than the decaying old man this world offers.

While social media is getting a lot of blame, consider the rest of the package before just laying an accusation soley there.

The entertainment culture is more dark, more depressive, more evil, more sick, more pornographic than ever before. It all affects kids.

Family life is at an all time low with self-absorbed parents focused on their own selves and not the best needs of their families. Many grow up in broken homes, blended families, or as out of wedlock babies. They lack family stability or even the expectation of having it as their friends suffer divorce, etc.

Evolutionary theory teaches that all are really a mistake on the way to something higher.

Social justice theory teaches that they should either be angry or remorseful for who God made us and the families He did place us within.

There are many potential factors. Funny how saving faith in Christ and repentance unto life solves most of them.
