Who’s to Blame When the Shooter Is One of Our Own?
In the case of the OPC—a denomination of around 30,000 people—a single killer is one too many, but hardly a sign of widespread, anti-Semitic radicalization among our youth. The path to becoming a racist murderer and an attempted mass shooter is likely very complicated and, until more details emerge, it is inappropriate to apportion specific blame to anyone or anything but the killer himself.

However, we cannot respond with complacency. The OPC, like most churches, attracts a cross-section of society, including its fair share of misfits and socially marginal figures. Embracing sinners, as Christ himself did, also brings risks. I remember a professor of pastoral theology telling me that in any 150-person congregation, there’s likely someone engaging in spousal abuse; that proved true in my experience. Our congregations must be ready for the possibility of deeply disturbed individuals in our midst. ...

IL see Carl Trueman wrote the article and he is woke so no surprise he wrote that silly article. Look, the young man is responsible for his actions and not the church unless they told him to do it and that just makes the culpable. These men need to stop writing these soft feminine articles and speak like men. The guy commited murder and will be tried for it.
What else is there to say? Not interested in the soft, verbose comments of men which seem more like a grandma than a dude.

Often in a classroom, there are situations which a student will cause great commotion if confronted with evenhandedness and a calm demeanor. My initial post was : Yet a denomination built on the reformers has a great propensity with inadvertently dismissing Israel as a history lesson and not a spiritual or promised future “.
Why would such a statement cause such animosity that I’m wondering if the SA monitors are once again asleep at the switch. But , keep in mind, when met with hostility, I’m rather dismissive as I’ve wrestled with bigger elephants . Thus my patience in non existent.

Regardless of eschatology, there are already aprox. 1.7 Million Jewish Christians in the USA alone! (Some of them even happen to be Presbyterian!)

@Wayfarer Pilgrim
My Grandma used to hold to that same method of determining guilt- the result was my Dad often got punished for things that were actually done by my Uncle or one of their foster brothers and it was a real strain on their relationship. At any rate, it certainly isn't a Biblical standard of determining Truth!

Not to mention, not all Reformed theologians of the Amillennial persuasion have the exact same take the issue. G. Vos seemed to espouse that there would be an end time revival ethnic Jews; and I believe Kim Riddlebarger and John Piper have also moved in that direction. There would then be converted Jewish believers among the end time people of God. This makes the most sense to my understanding of both eschatology and soteriology.

"the louder the protest, the more guilty the party." Did you take a detailed survey of your benighted students to discover this, and if so, how do you know this applies everywhere else?

And how do you judge my "protest" to be "loud?" You're the teacher, so show me how to make it quieter for you. Or am I not supposed to protest at all, so you can continue accusing Reformed people of endorsing pogroms or whatnot?

There seem to be SOME people who have gotten sucked in by internet "truth tellers" - hucksters who peddle "secret knowledge" that usually involves the wholesale slander of particular ethnic groups as the source of any and all evil.

There is so much that is heartbreakingly wrong with this, and I know more than one person who has fallen victim to these lying crackpots as an over-reaction to the liberal media. Some of these frauds even claim to be "Christians" complete with "Angel Feathers". Why does it never occur to people that what Satan offered Eve- Secret Knowledge- is exactly what they are seeking from these seedy websites... some of which even credit "Serpents of Wisdom" as their mentors!?

ALL people of every ethnicity are Totaly Depraved, we are all of One Blood, and NO people group can sovereignly orchestrate the future. God is the only True Sovereign. If your sources of info say differently then they are being used by the Father of Lies.

""Mass shootings, while thankfully not routine weekly occurrences, have become a matter of “when” rather than “if” in modern America.""

You should never look for 'sinless' people in churches or society.

Unless you are looking for Christ.

1John 2:1 My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:
2 And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.
3 And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments.
4 He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.
5 But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him.
6 He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked."

I'm unsurprised and disgusted that people here would bring up the "Replacement Theology is Antisemitic" Strawman popular with Dispensationalist authors (e.g. Barry Horner). They are imitating the bullying leftists use against conservatives: Guilt By Association.

1 Cor. 6:3: "Know ye not that we shall judge angels?"
From what I've seen lately among Christians, I fear for the angels!

My family and I are not OPC but we know some that are. We've not known them to be anti-Israel but support evangelism of Jews. I seriously doubt that a flavor of downplaying Israel or Judaism is a factor. This kid torched a mosque earlier.

I agree with Dr. Tim as well as John Lee. Demonic forces coupled with total depravity are more than enough to trigger this tragedy. We're dealing with strange behaviors and a hidden agenda within a different kind of church right now. When whatever is hidden in the darkness comes out into the light, I suspect that the impacts of total depravity and how deeply it runs even in Christians will be shocking. Reminds me of that old hymn, "I need Thee every hour, O precious Lord..." just to cover my sin.

People get hung up sometimes and think Jesus was just a little boost and they are alright now. Utter nonsense. 1 John 1:8-10 describes sin as something we have as in possess. We still need Jesus today, perhaps more than ever because now many of us know more of what the Lord expects of us where we cannot measure up (e.g, Romans 7). It all goes back to Jesus. I'm with Wayfarer too on his frozen, chosen comment and I'm a 5 point Calvinist.

The few mass murderers who survive almost invariably say that they heard “voices” telling them to do it. And they aren’t lying. The more we marginalize and even criminalize the influence of God and Christianity on our society, the more we can anticipate demonic influence to fill the gap.

The introduction that SA gives, is good, one can go with that. This church doesn't give any special place to Israel. A Dispensational church would not attract or hold a person who was indifferent to Israel or wasn't philo-Semetic.

See,

https://tinyurl.com/yajxasow (A history of Dispensationalism Mike Vlach PDF), but I don't blame this particular church/denomination for a violent predisposition towards anyone including Jews.

The violent individual was/is responsible for his own actions.

[Our congregations must be ready for the possibility of deeply disturbed individuals in our midst. ...]

Let's see now, something to do with total depravity, unregenerate nature, the flesh, the sinful nature, the old man?

Surely not...

Are there none that doeth good?
