Archbishop of Canterbury: 'I pray in tongues every day'

The Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, has said he regularly prays in tongues and seeks 'words of knowledge' and 'prophecy' as part of his daily spiritual discipline.

However, Welby told Premier Christian Radio: 'It's not something to make a great song and dance about. Given it's usually extremely early in the morning it's not usually an immensely ecstatic moment.'

He said: 'In my own prayer life and as part of my daily discipline I pray in tongues every day – not as an occasional thing, but as part of daily prayer.' ...

Brother JohnUK,

I sincerely hope you are not going to discontinue posting on this forum. For years you have posted and even if someone disagrees with your opinions, they cause all of us to ponder. I would not allow these Pharisees to take anything away from you. Over the years you have brought me great comfort and I have learned much from you. And your thoughts about grace and redemption are right on.

So, unless you have decided as “unto the Lord” not to post, then please reconsider.

1. John UK really believes that the SA forum is a church otherwise he would not have accused ladybug of causing division in the body of Christ. Even if he were right in his accusation, what about his causing division? Somehow that is excusable!

2. As James points out his apology is hollow and in fact is used by him to turn matters against James and Lurker, accusing them of being heretics.

3. Forgetting the display of his own terrible behavior he accuses MS of not possessing a sweet nature, and in the process praises Graham who is a known errorist and ecumenist.

4. He is now doing what he does with the churches he briefly attends. Finding them imperfect and forgetting his own imperfections he leaves pointing the finger at everyone except himself.

5. Finally he points to 2 apparently ungracious posts calling him out for not apologizing and then posts a mostly graceless post. That is quite the art.

To be clear, I wish John well as a brother in Christ with whom I have enjoyed fellowship here although we did not always see eye to eye.

I do not wish to it to be in anyway construed as a statement of agreement with all the words of his last post. I certainly don't agree with his statements concerning Lurker, James, ladybug or MS who are precious brothers and sisters in Christ to me.

John,
Thank you for the apology although the attached label of heretic for myself and Lurker seems to be more of the same. I'm sorry you see it that way but thankfully it is not any man made confession that is to be the means for such a label.
Where I'm from, The sincere apology stops at "I'm sorry." which is a display of ownership.
Your attached narrative, to me anyway, seems to be an attempt to defend yourself on why you felt that way while laying the blame on others, which is the calling card of playing the victim. Once that victim mentality is gone you will see the bitterness depart as well...but that's just my opinion.
I wish you nothing but the best and will be praying for you.

Thank you US for your comment. I see what you are referring to and after reading through again I concede that my suggested "perhaps" was off the mark.

From Sola...

Christopher 000. Thank you.
You have at last brought us to the feet of Christ. This is the New Covenant which he has purchased with his blood, that we may live and walk in it.
I myself laboured under the Old Covenant for years according to the Reformed Theology of the Law, but thank God through the faithful preaching of his Word, my spiritual eyes were opened to behold Christ an all he has accomplished for us. Gone are my frustrations anger argumentation etc. It's a whole new way to live - in Christ and he by his Spirit in me.
If there are any still labouring like I did, give it up!... yield to Christ and his 'better' !aw, as brother Chris has here highlighted - then the strivings and wrangling will cease and we will sweetly all agree to do all we can to build one another up in our most Holy Faith in a manner that expresses the Holy Gospel we profess.

another excellent comment...yes and amen

Ps. 51:5 Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me.

Commentary by: Charles H. Spurgeon
- continued -

"David's mother was the Lord's handmaid, he was born in chaste wedlock, of a good father, and he was himself, "the man after God's own heart;"
and yet his nature was as fallen as that of any other son of Adam, and there only needed the occasion for the manifesting of that sad fact. In our shaping we were put out of shape, and when we were conceived our nature conceived sin. Alas, for poor humanity! Those who will may cry it up, but he is most blessed who in his own soul has learned to lament his lost estate."

Thanks for that commentary, June.

If I'm not mistaken, that's the third commentary on Psalm 51:5 you've posted and all three have the same in common:

1) All obviously uphold and promote the doctrine of imputation of original sin.

2) All are reformed.

3) All willfully ignore Psalm 139:13-16.

How is it possible to say 'I love God with all my heart, mind, soul and strength' yet willfully ignore a portion of the word He inspired because it casts a cloud of doubt over a man's doctrine? Seems a bit hypocritical to me which is why I will never associate myself with the reformed label. Still, I've never denied anyone the right to be wrong.

Have a great day June.

Ps. 51:5 Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me.
Commentary by: Charles H. Spurgeon

"Verse 5. Behold, I was shapen in iniquity. He is thunderstruck at the discovery of his inbred sin, and proceeds to set it forth. This was not intended to justify himself, but it rather meant to complete the confession. It is as if he said, not only have I sinned this once, but I am in my very nature a sinner. The fountain of my life is polluted as well as its streams. My birth tendencies are out of the square of equity; I naturally lean to forbidden things. Mine is a constitutional disease, rendering my very person obnoxious to thy wrath. And in sin did my mother conceive me. He goes back to the earliest moment of his being, not to traduce his mother, but to acknowledge the deep tap roots of his sin. It is a wicked wresting of Scripture to deny that original sin and natural depravity are here taught. Surely men who cavil at this doctrine have need to be taught of the Holy Spirit what be the first principles of the faith."

Questions, answers, and topics aside, I've seen no evidence of vs22-25. I see knowledge being tossed around, and a lot of pride, but haven't seen an ounce of the love, and ways of Christ. I see a large chunk of the equation missing, by the very same who want to teach, but are missing very key elements that would gain them the respect they need to be effacatious.
I don't see people being treated as God commands, so whoever is guilty of defying God by dismissing His call to being humble, meek, patient, and kind, etc., while believing they're on some higher spiritual plane, then woe to you. You can strive for obediance, knowledge, holiness, and purity, but without the love that should come natural as a new creature, you're human efforts are nothing but a clanging symbol...a lot of noise.
Excellent thoughts Bro. Christopher.May we by His Grace always endeavor to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.

Galations 5:14-26

14 For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

15 But if ye bite and devour one another, take heed that ye be not consumed one of another.

16 This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.

17 For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.

18 But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law.

19 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,

20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,

21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,

23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

24 And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.

25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.

Out of space...

First, greetings to MS and ladybug, hope all is well.

Reading back though the thread it looks like even the moderator called you out John UK. James and Lurker have been gracious and indeed deserve better treatment. An apology seems appropriate but do as God leads not just because we suggest.

James, you surprise me with your post. The Gentiles driven out by Joshua and the children of Israel (7:45) are not the same people as the Israelites who died before that even happened during the 40 years of wandering.(7:42)

Not seeing Hebrews 3:17 in Ezekiel’s vision but to be honest not wanting to do a discussion here, this thread more than likely should be shut down. Last word all yours here, brother.

Been a long day for my Bride and self with two of my visiting Grands over for a visit today. What a joy.

What a joy it is to also share thoughts and have exchanges with those who have a desire to learn and an open mind to hear Scripture speak by digging into the word an ask the hard questions which drives you to Scripture for the answer.

Bro US posed a thought...
Not by any Scripture you can cite that says God called those of the nation of Israel, Gentiles.

Perhaps here?

Acts 7:42 Then God turned, and gave them up to worship the host of heaven; as it is written in the book of the prophets, O ye house of Israel...

Acts 7:45 Which also our fathers that came after brought in with Jesus into the possession of the ***Gentiles, whom God drave out before the face of our fathers, unto the days of David***;

Could this be the same group spoken of here as well?

Heb 3:17 But with whom was he grieved forty years? was it not with them that had sinned, whose carcases fell...

Could Heb 3:17 be The valley of bones in Ezek 37?

Ezek 37:11 these bones are the whole house of Isr

Total Depravity of Man - cont.
"Behold, I was shapen in iniquity," wrote David, "and in sin did my mother conceive me"(Psa.51:5). "ALL have sinned"(Rom.3:23), without exception; and to this truth, the Scriptures give abundant witness (e.g. Gen.6:5; 8:21; Rom.3:10-12; Isa.64:6; Jer.17:9; etc., etc.).
All mankind sinned "in Adam." He, being the father and representative of the entire human race, when he sinned, all sinned. We were "in his loins", so to speak. Just as Levi "payed tithes in Abraham, for he was yet in the loins of his father, when Melchisedec met" Abraham (Heb.7:9,10), so all mankind was "in the loins" of Adam. And thus, ever since the birth of Cain, the first man, every man and woman enters this world a rebel against God, spiritually dead, alienated from God, and under the dominion of sin.
Perfect June. Maybe Lurker will see it one day.
