Evangelical-backed Brazilian president takes aim at political correctness, gun control, environment

Brazil's newly inaugurated President Jair Bolsonaro said on Tuesday his election had freed the country from 'socialism and political correctnes' and he vowed to tackle corruption, crime and economic mismanagement in Latin America's largest nation.

Bolsonaro, a former army captain turned lawmaker who openly admires Brazil's 1964-1985 military dictatorship, promised in his first remarks as president to adhere to democratic norms, after his tirades against the media and political opponents had stirred unease. ...

Simon Jenkins wrote:
Brazil has been one of the world’s most exciting emergent nations, yet its evolution over 30 years from dictatorship to hesitant democracy seems to have stalled. Bolsonaro has exploited the oldest politics, that of self-interest, and also the newest, that of anger, polarisation and fear. Voters have stomached his distaste for gay people, feminism, rainforests and the rule of law, to rid themselves of a corrupt leftwing regime unable to contain street violence. A famously tolerant nation has opted for military and economic discipline.

In any country, the apparent breakdown of social order will drive voters to extremism....

I support this man--he has already done 3 good things: 1. move to privatize airports to reduce cost of govt. 2. mention that Brazil needs to host a US airbase to counter the influence of Russia--now building a military base in Venezuela, and 3. say that Brazil has to find other countries to make a coalition to fight the communist regimes of Cuba and Venezuela. I am going to ask any Brazilians living near me if they can get me a bumper sticker with his name on it. He is the real thing, even more conservative than Trump.

Associated Press wrote:
Bolsonaro, a fan of U.S. President Donald Trump, met with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to discuss joint efforts regarding the leftist administrations in Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela.

Pompeo told him that Trump is “very pleased with the relationship that our two countries are on the precipice of beginning to develop.”

I find it interesting that he admires the previous dictatorship...

Many times, wanna-be dictators give the country large amounts of freedom until they don't question anything he does...

It will certainly be interesting to watch this guy @Douglas Fir

Keep an eye on this guy. He is going to do things that will put conservatism to the test, and I think it will pass. Of course, you need to know Brazilian conditions.
I heard a joke from a Brazilian: they don't have earthquakes, hurricanes, but they do have something worse--Brazilians!
