Jerry Falwell Jr. Argues It’s ‘Immoral’ For Evangelicals ‘Not to Support’ Trump

Liberty University president Jerry Falwell Jr. told the Washington Post that it’s “immoral for” evangelical leaders “not to support” Donald Trump in a lengthy interview regarding his right-wing religious views and support of the president.

The Washington Post‘s Joe Heim asked Falwell about faith leaders who have criticized his pro-Trump views, and Falwell pointed to minority unemployment rates as a reason that all Christians should back the president.

“It may be immoral for them not to support him, because he’s got African American employment to record highs, Hispanic employment to record highs,” Falwell replied. “They need to look at what the president did for the poor.” ...

Moderator, Jim has posted this same quote numerous times. I think he was previously warned that if he persisted in doing this, he would be banned from posting on SA.

...Morality and religion will not invite or secure the blessing of God. They never have and they never will. A more moral America, a more moral and religious America does not advance in divine favor one inch. A more moral and a more religious America will not escape divine judgment any more than Pharisaic Judaism in Jesus' time escaped the devastating judgment of God in 70 A.D. when hundreds of thousands of Jews were slaughtered by godless Romans. And Jesus warned about that on several occasions.

There's only one thing God blesses, just one and that is He blesses saving faith in and love for His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ. That's the only thing He blesses. Anybody who does not believe in and love the Lord Jesus Christ is among the cursed, right? As Christians, of course we are for morality. We're not for immorality. And we can do some topical, some superficial good, we can through political means because we live in a republic and a democracy, we can mitigate public indecency in some ways. We can mitigate public scandal, can use our democratic privileges. But that does not advance us in divine favor either individually or collectively.

I saw an interview with Shelby Foote on the flag, the heroism and the cause. But then Shelby was court marshaled for falsifying a Jeep log so he could go on a date . He was a magnificent writer but a chaotic man.

Hadn’t thought of that, WFP. I think the reason the South stayed in the war so long was because their generals were more handsome.

Hi June,
Hope you're well. Since you quoted Mr. Spurgeon, who I happen to like, by the way, I was curious to get your thoughts on the following in quotes. I posted it once before, but I always tend to wonder what others have to say when a favorite, spiritual giant of preachers, makes a statement that goes against the grain of what they, themselves, firmly believe, and how one is to determine what else they're right or wrong on, when it comes to other matters of theology that can be argued in various ways:

In his [Spurgeon] sermon called “The Birth of Christ” preached on December 24, 1854, he ended his sermon saying,

"Now a happy Christmas to you all; and it will be a happy Christmas if you have God with you. I shall say nothing to day against festivities on this great birthday of Christ. We will to-morrow think of Christ’s birthday; we shall be obliged to do it, I am sure, however sturdily we may hold to our rough Puritanism. And so, ‘let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, neither with the leaven of malice and wickedness; but with the unleavend bread of sincerity and truth.’ Do not feast as if you wished to keep the festival of Bacchus; do not live to-morrow as if you adored some heathen divinity. Feast, Christians, feast; you have a right to feast...

...Go to the house of feasting to-morrow, celebrate your Saviour’s birth; do not be ashamed to be glad; you have a right to be happy. Solomon says, “Go thy way, eat thy bread with joy, and drink thy wine with a merry heart; for God now accepteth thy works. Let thy garments be always white; and let thy head lack no ointment.”
“Religion never was designed To make your pleasures less.”

Recollect that your Master ate butter and honey. Go your way, rejoice tomorrow, but in your feasting, think of the Man in Bethlehem; let him have a place in your hearts, give him the glory, think of the virgin who conceived him, but think most of all of the Man born, the Child given. I finish by again saying, —

“A HAPPY CHRISTMAS TO YOU ALL”

So a good catch, Frank. Yet another politically noisy "evangelical" institution selling out sound doctrine for public influence and increased enrollment. This is the fruit of widespread hostility to dogmatic truth which started maybe a century ago.
And the RCC hierarchy is not even politically conservative; only some of its deluded adherents like Buchanan and Hannity are. Look up "Catholic Social Teaching."
Thanks for your thoughts Neil and Just a Guy!

Yes, the love of money is the root of all evil and fame and notoriety are pretty synonymous.

I agree with both of your train of thoughts.

Well, since 97%+4% doesn't equal 100%, apparently, I've made my first mistake. I meant to say, "the other 5% really doesn't matter". I'm so stupid...I couldn't even double up the white space after that last period. Totally hopeless. 😭

Very, very true. I have not been able to find an institution that got as big as say, liberty University, that has not compromised on many, if not most, of their beliefs.

Humans have a nack for trading convictions for some type of world gain. It's my hope that we can avoid that concept in our small lives.

""told the Washington Post that it’s “immoral for” evangelical leaders “not to support” Donald Trump in a lengthy interview""

Whats the definition of 'evangelical' today??

Romans 13:1 Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God.
2 Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation.
3 For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same:
4 For he is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil.
5 Wherefore ye must needs be subject, not only for wrath, but also for conscience sake."

John UK, I have appreciated your comments and zeal for the truth. I Happened to listen to Mencarow's sermon on the topic and found it to be very sound and a lot of food for thought. It's very easy to just accept the way things are done in regards to worship without really examining whether or not they line up Scripturally. We often defend things based on subjectivity. I found Greg Price's sermons on the subject to be very good as well. At any rate, your input based on the Bible has not been futile.
Why we choose to follow annual dates with events of the Bible randomly and carelessly assigned to them is a poser.
No rhyme or reason for the seasons.
Lurker- It's a shame that the only times which loved ones seem to visit are often just during "holidays". I hope that you enjoy your visit but I certainly wouldn't support "holidays" even to that end.
Sadly, many people in nursing homes and other places of confinement find themselves without visitors save for those days if they come at all. In their case, it would be better if the "loved" ones just refrained from coming at all as even the patients are keenly aware that they do it merely out of a sense of obligation.

Is this the same Liberty University that invited Sean Hannity, a practicing and outspoken catholic to do their commencement ceremony? A rhetorical question.

I used to be a follower of Falwell Sr., but then realized he stood for nothing except some sort of cultural Christianity. His son is far worse.

All Christian are conservative, but not all conservatives are Christian. Not hard at all.
