Atheist Billboards Promote the ‘Real Reason for the Season'

An atheist group has launched a series of holiday-themed “Winter Solstice” billboards in Atlanta to underscore what it sees as the “real reason for the season.”

“FFRF points out that the real reason for the season is the Winter Solstice, taking place on Dec. 21 this year — the shortest, darkest day of the year,” the news release says. “The Winter Solstice has been celebrated for millennia in the Northern Hemisphere because it signals the rebirth of the sun and the continuation of life.”

A third billboard went up on Peachtree Independent Boulevard. It reads: “Supernatural Belief -- The Enemy of Humanity.” ...

I am rejoicing today in every aspect of the person of Jesus Christ, including his incarnation, his life, his death, his ascension, his coming again soon to end time and bring in eternity. This is something I do every day, and I give him praise and worship, for he is worthy. Hallelujah!

Doc, have a nice day, bro.

1. It is perfectly biblical and par for the course, that Christians should be murdered or beaten or persecuted in some way. Jesus said it, and I believe it.

2. Not only is this an exaggeration, it is false in its fundamental point. You imagine that some holier-than-thou folks are pointing a finger and judging you? Not at all, brother. You are clearly mistaken. Let me explain.

A great majority of Christians effectively claim, "I am fine, my life is fine, my church is fine, my worship is fine, my obedience is fine, I am rich and have no need of anything." And so they don't change from year to year. They never change. And Jesus has something to say to them regarding change. Yes. He does.

To Quiet Christian...it is agreed that Christ must first love us. That is a part of the gospel. Still we contend for the truth.

We argue vehemently about one day in 365 (or 366) but have long drawn out discussions complaining about the methods missionaries use to reach the lost.

You don't have to be a doctor, Tim, to see there is a priority problem.

Greetings to one Inside the Icebox. I disagree. We cannot love each other without Jesus first loving us (1 John). Without Jesus, we have absolutely nothing of any worth. His reconciliation bringing us in fellowship with the Father brings us also to reconcilation and fellowship with one another (Ephesians 2). Otherwise, good points.

But Dr. Tim has a point. There is often more mudslinging than edification on this site, and our discussion about the joys of chicken farming have outweighed our concern for our brothers and sisters experiencing persecution, illness, etc. Do we love our neighbors?

Thank you, Unprofitable Servant, for your kindness.

Dr. Tim,

It is the curse from our original sin where all these transgressions and cruelties and violence come from. We can never help or love our neighbor, even our unbelieving ones, if we ourselves are not agreed upon what the word of God teaches us. Satan laughs at how he has confused the church and Antichrist rubs his hands together in wicked delight.

A "social gospel" will not in the end help anyone, but the true gospel will. George Whitefield did not contend that the slaves in the USA be freed from their carnal slavery but from their spiritual slavery. He taught them the gospel and saved thousands of souls. They are happy in eternity, our long home, for ever with our God.

In this world, we have sorrow, especially those who are of the household of God. It must be expected and we are to help those from sorrows and harm as much as we are enabled to help them. Our eye, our priority, must be single and have it focused upon the Lord Jesus Christ and his truth.

Jude writes: "Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered to the saints."

Thanks for your remarks, Susan. This will be my last comment on the subject of Christmas.
All over the world, Christians are being murdered, severely beaten, arrested and sued for their service to Christ, and this elicits hardly a peep from the readers of these threads. The sodomites are taking over every facet of society, including the church. What do we say about that on SA? Very little. But let a Christian put up a few lights and buy some surprises for his grandchildren, and we throw out hundreds of posts about how wicked he is. I hope this puts into perspective how messed up our priorities are.
BTW, I catch hell for my serious comments as well as for the silly ones. If I’m gonna catch hell either way, I might as well enjoy myself along the way.

Dr. Tim,

I often smile at your posts because they are witty...

however, levity is not a thing commended by the word of God (See Ephesians 5:4)...He rather would have us go to funerals than parties because it would be better for us to see the reality of the shortness of our days here (See Ecclesiastes 7:1-6)... It would make us more careful of our words.

And as for "bickering" that is a thing we are definitely NOT to do...but we ARE to contend for the truth. So this is not bickering but a hope and a prayer that a brother might see beyond his own imaginations into what is really true...

that Xmass is not a thing warranted by the word of God.

P.S. To Unprofitable Servant. I must ask your forgiveness for a past post in that I corrected your spelling. I fear I was prideful.

I didn’t bring up the subject of Santa; someone else did (indirectly at least) in a humorous way, and I responded in a humorous way.

Glad to hear it, bro.

So what explanation do you have for the "Ho, Ho, Ho." ?

Yes indeed, I thought Dr Tim was just practicing for his Santa Claus role later in the week; but, as if that wasn't serious enough, SC's comment furnished further enlightenment, and makes it very serious.

I'm surprised I have not seen this verse come into the conversation Seeing how this description of Melchisedec is made like unto the Son. I think His attributes are clear.

Heb 7:3 Without father, without mother, without descent, having neither beginning of days, nor end of life; but made like unto the Son of God; abideth a priest continually.

Sorry, but you are reading too much into the instances you mention. It is what you want to read into them that you see, not what they intent.

E.g., the child John jerking in the womb of the mother at the presence of Mary does not mean John rejoiced at the *birth* of Christ -not born yet!- but at his presence there, or at his coming at best, quite far from a personal party celebration in Xmass mode.

Or in the case of Abraham you mention, Abraham 'saw his day'. A 'day' in Scripture is a scene of history, not a particular birth-day.

It is the coming of Christ that they rejoiced in, which rejoicing is not of a birth-event like, as in the baby showers of our day.

In Scripture Christ's coming, figures as described in Ga.4:4, Jh 3:16, or 1Tm. 3:16; it is the presence of the Son being bodily manifested. This is beyond a *birth* circumstance, which is what Xmass focuses on.

This is the glorious sense:
"... great is the mystery of godliness:
God was manifest in the flesh,
justified in the Spirit,
seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles,
believed on in the world, received up into glory"

Dr.
If you could show me where my statement was false in regards to "ho ho ho" and how it is becoming to a Christian rather than assault my character, our discussion could be more productive.

James 4:4 - Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.

Carnal Christians and the world get along very well.
