Instagram removes Baptist ministry's post on why only men should be pastors

The social networking giant Instagram is admitting that it made an error when it removed a Reformed Baptist ministry's post promoting an op-ed contending that women shouldn't be pastors and has restored the post in question.

Founders Ministries, a Reformed group within the Southern Baptist Convention, posted to its Instagram account on Nov. 7 a screenshot of an article posted to the Founders webpage by Founders board member Tom Hicks titled "Only Men May Be Pastors."

On Nov. 11, Founders Executive Director Tom Ascol took to Twitter to sound an alarm that the Nov. 7 Instagram post had been removed.

Ascol posted a screenshot of the notification received from Instagram informing the ministry why the post had been removed. Instagram's initial explanation stated that the post did not comply with the platform's community guidelines on "hate speech or symbols." ...

Instagram recognized that the op-ed was removed in error. I agree, though, overall, Quiet Christian. I loathe social media, especially Facebook, because of the liberal, and opiniated nonsense that it breeds, is home to, and censors. I thought Instagram was just for posting pics though...I guess not. Actually, Pinterest is pretty cool if your looking for how-to, and creative sorts of things and ideas, etc.

Couldn't agree more with you, Quiet Christian; it's their property, they make the rules.

We've now seen multiple instances of similar actions posted to SA, which I appreciate. Personally, I see 2 sides to this. Instagram owns its servers and therefore is lending its private property for use by the public. But the property is still private and creates a situation in which the property owner still maintains the right to regulate activity on its own server. Comments get deleted from SA all the time by the moderator under the same principle. Posting to someone's private server is simply not the same as speaking in a public park or sidewalk or posting to the public library bulletin board.

However, SA has done a pretty good job of stepping in and defining what community is acceptable on its property. Companies like Instagram, Google, FB, etc have made the appearance of being completely public property and a public forum when they are, in fact, not. It would be more honest to lay out what their terms actually mean to them...what exactly defines "hate" speech in their eyes...and that Christians need to take their communications elsewhere. Perhaps they are close to just running us off their property?

There are some federal court cases working their way thru, are there not, that will decide just how public a private seerver is?
