Unselfish People Earn Higher Salaries, Have More Children
Being unselfish comes with benefits likely appealing to a selfish person. According to a study by a trio of researchers in Stockholm and South Carolina, people who tend to put others’ needs ahead of their own typically see greater incomes and have more children, when compared with people more focused on themselves.

“The result is clear in both the American and the European data. The most unselfish people have the most children and the moderately unselfish receive the highest salaries,” says study author Kimmo Eriksson, a researcher at the Centre for Cultural Evolution at Stockton University, in a release. “And we also find this result over time – the people who are most generous at one point in time have the largest salary increases when researchers revisit them later in time,” ...

In response to Jim’s last comment

Maybe you don’t know this but Americans are by far the most generous people in the World.

America has been named as the world's most generous nation in the world, where its citizens give the most to charity, according to a new report. The USA, New Zealand and Canada have the highest rate of charitable donations as a percentage gross domestic product (GDP), the Charities Aid Foundation (CAF) found.Feb 2, 2016

I wonder if this is why Mexicans have more children than Americans?

Joshua Partlow wrote:
“These people have been beautiful,” he said. “Everyone’s helping us out.”

Who is financing the caravan? There is no sign here of George Soros or the Russians. Instead, the responsibility of feeding, clothing and sheltering several thousand migrants has been embraced by the small Mexican towns along the route,...

They certainly are generous anyway, perhaps American Protestants have something to learn from them?

This makes a lot of sense, though it is not obvious.

Anyone taking the Yale University course on well being at the Coursera website is learning that our minds want things that are not ultimately satisfying. That new car smell wears off, and you get used to driving it around. It was fun to desire it before you bought it, and then to drive it for a year or two, but then you had to wash it, wax it, pay higher insurance rates, and the fun wears off. Same thing with any material object your mind tells you want. Experiences are better.
Doing kind things for others helps them and others. Talking to strangers helps us and them. Putting fruits and vegetables on your kitchen counter instead of doughnuts, pies, cakes and cookies will help you lose weight (who could have figured that?).
These are just a few examples; check out the course on your own--it's free.

I knew there was some reason for the mass exodus of Americans to Latin America, they must earn more money and will have more money when they move Honduras and Nicaragua

Also food for thought.

Nicholas Kristof wrote:
...This is complicated terrain with lots of exceptions, and the recent scandals involving Harvey Weinstein, Louis C.K. and Al Franken underscore that liberals can be skunks as much as anyone else. Yet if one looks at blue and red state populations as a whole, it’s striking that conservatives champion “family values” even as red states have high rates of teenage births, divorce and prostitution. In contrast, people in blue states don’t trumpet these family values but often seem to do a better job living them....
excerpt from, "Blue States Practice the Family Values Red States Preach"

In other words it's easy to make assumptions, and the wrong ones at that.

It is a Biblical principle

But this I say, He which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully.

Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again.

The liberal soul shall be made fat: and he that watereth shall be watered also himself

Cast thy bread upon the waters: for thou shalt find it after many days.

And Carl, do you suppose the supporters of universal healthcare and free college education are operating out of an unselfish desire to help others? Not on your life. They are either covetous, wanting for nothing what others have worked hard to get, or they are crooks who will say and do anything to get the votes of other crooks.
