Under pressure, Sony gives up copyright claim to Bach's music
J.S. Bach died in 1750, which means that his music is in the public domain.

You can own the rights to a recorded performance but not the actual music.

Sony knows that now.

But it took a fight by musician James Rhodes to convince the mega-corporation. ...

You have a good point there, Neil. Still, the addition of a Bach piece to the prelude helps set a worshipful tone to the sanctuary.

There are some who will class any music from this era or the Classical era as somehow sacred. Take "Ode to Joy" taken from Beethoven's Fifth Symphony. Some have claimed that Beethoven was some sort of Christian, which is false. And while there is a favorite hymn set to this music, it is also the EU's national anthem.

Still, we see this verse coming to pass even today:

And the glory and honor of the Gentiles shall be brought unto it. - Revelation 21:26

Bach may have been influenced by other musicians, all are anyway, but it is safe to say that his work is original.
Not *all* of it. It doesn't denigrate his talent if he borrowed ideas from contemporaries. Does it really matter? It only would if one idolizes him, as some Christians I know do.

Much as I enjoy his sacred music, I have to agree with Leopold, the Calvinist Prince of Anhalt-Köthen, in not wanting elaborate Lutheran-style music in public worship. Much of Bach's composition there was secular.

Bach is a favorite in our household, and my wife has had no trouble accessing sheet music in the public domain although she cannot always find what she is looking for.

Baroque era music is very special and rich from the lack of capability in the instruments of the day, particularly the harpsichord. The piano-forte changed the equation and enabled composers like Beethoven to craft a different sound. Yet the ornamentation of the earlier style still holds much interest. There are even claims that it helps broken brains.

Bach may have been influenced by other musicians, all are anyway, but it is safe to say that his work is original.

Nothing to see here; another example of a misleading, provocative headline.

Bach himself transcribed from or imitated Italians such as Vivaldi, as there was no such thing as music copyright in his time. Music was sort of like a skilled trade.

It may be that Japanese appreciate baroque/classical music more than we do. Bach Collegium Japan is lead by Masaaki Suzuki, who is Reformed.

Indeed, BDF! "SDG" for "Soli Deo Gloria" was often inscribed on Bach's manuscripts in his own hand. It became one of the five famous "solas" of the Reformation. George Handel did as well but perhaps not as often. There were probably others.

Interesting to note that Bach wrote "to the Glory of God and that my neighbor may benefit thereby" at the top of all his compositions. I think that sets really a good example for christians in the music industry.
