A Third Of Teens Haven’t Read A Single Book In Past Year

Bookworm teens have always been few and far between, but now they seem like a dying breed. A new study puts some weight behind this notion by revealing just how American teenagers choose to spend their time (hint: it’s not with books). A third of adolescents haven’t even opened a dustjacket — or touched a Kindle for that matter — in the past year.

Researchers from San Diego State University recently analyzed four decades’ worth of data from an ongoing, nationally-based lifestyle survey studying teens. The data, which provides insight into the daily habits of over a million adolescents, shows the enormous impact of digital media over time.

The meteoric rise of internet-based activities cannot be understated: between social media, texting, gaming, and surfing the web, the average high school senior spent six hours a day online in 2016 — double the time from a decade earlier. Eighth graders (4 ...

Hi Don, if you're interested, I'm in the middle of reading a book entitled "Eat Fat". I was lent it by a good Christian sister who believes it may help my health. It is a particular diet which concentrates on Very Low Carbs/High Fat content. It seems to be a very recent innovation, and I am trying it out, because in a recent blood test, I was found to have very high tryglicerides (over 6, should be below 2) even though I've been on a Low Fat/High Carbs diet. My GP said she wanted to put me on statins to cure it, and when I pleaded with her not to do that, she said that if I could get the reading down through diet, she would be content.

The last book I finished was ""HMS Ulysses." I read a book about every week to ten days--not as much as I used to, but I don't usually read a single book straight through. Right now I'm reading "Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus," " Top Dawg," and " Wild at Heart," in addition to Genesis, Job, Proverbs, II Samuel, Ecclesiastes, and I Corinthians. Among other miscellaneous stuff.

Peter I understand exactly what you're saying, but Jim Lincoln is a socialist and in all likelihood not a Christian. He's on Sermon Audio as a troll.

Yes, Peter, BRETHREN should dwell together in unity--Psalm 133:1. However, there's only one way to deal with a snake, and that is to bust his head--Genesis 3:14-15. Jim has proven his serpenthood time and time again.

People seriously why are you being so cruel to one another? "Behold how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity" (probably not exact quote)

What rank hypocrisy, Jim. You post a quote from a cat saying we need to read stuff that's hard to read, but every chance you get, you slam the King James Bible because, according to you (and not according to readability studies), it's just too hard to read. I used to teach third and fourth grade boys, and they had no difficulty understanding the KJB. Aren't you at least as smart as a fourth grader? It makes one wonder, doesn't it?

...we don't read enough complex books, and we don't read well. This isn't just a comment about what we read in our spare time, but on the level of reading required in high schools across America. One study found that between 1917 and 2012, the level of complexity of the books assigned in high school significantly decreased. As Matt Lee Anderson recently put it

...a people whose curriculums are shot through with Shakespeare will have more tools to deeply understand the world than those who are assigned The Hunger Games, however enjoyable they might be or well they might be written...We should struggle through books like Shakespeare because the sort of understanding about the world that we need often doesn’t come on a first read of it, but on a third or fourth. Confronting a text whose meaning is initially obscure to us and being impelled to press onward, to work and think and wrestle, gives us the sort of discipline and training that genuine wisdom demands.

We need to read books that stretch and challenge our minds. We need to read books that can improve our lives....

Lots of homeschool supporters on this site, Peter! While it is true that students do well academically at the various educational options available, and not every family is blessed to homeschool, quite a few of us like that option best.

Our autistic child sure does. Biggest things from his perspective are that mommy and daddy understand how he does best and that he doesn't have to repeat evolutionary theories as true.
