Churchgoers sticking around for theology, not music

Most churchgoers will put up with a change in music style or a different preacher, according to a LifeWay Research study released today (June 26). But don't mess with a church's beliefs or there may be an exodus.

The study of Protestant churchgoers found most are committed to staying at their church over the long haul. But more than half say they would strongly consider leaving if the church's beliefs changed, according to the study, which was conducted Aug. 22–30, 2017.

Pastors often worry about changing church music and setting off a "worship war," said Scott McConnell, executive director of LifeWay Research. But few say they would leave over music.

Churchgoers are much more concerned about their church's beliefs. ...

I should have remembered this one! I first saw this when I was a Methodist!
Dr. James Emery White wrote:
What is a cult of personality?

It’s when a person becomes the center of attention rather than Christ; an individual looms larger than a mission; a figure is given more status than the organization itself.

... consider the following ten signs, in no particular order, of a cult of personality at work in a local church:

1. The demand for special treatment, special honor, special recognition....

2. The website is focused on an individual. A person’s quotes, their picture....

3. No one is allowed to question the leader without retribution....

4. If the leader were to leave, die, or fall into scandal...the entire enterprise would collapse....

5. The line between “look at what God is doing” and “look at what our leader is doing” is almost non-existent....

6. The name of the leader and the name of the church are inseparable....

7. Image is paramount......

8. There is no sense of team leadership,...

9. The person travels in an entourage.

10.Their speaking/teaching often revolves around themselves....

Just avoid churches like the above.

I have too agree with the article. I do believe that the successful church cannot be measured by growth in members if it only attracts business contacts, youth programs or a rock band. If a church attracted the sinner by the righteous lives of its members then your doing church. If that sinner is converted by Christ by the witness and in dwelling of the Holy Spirit, then praise God. Compassion, love and holiness of Christ will convert the soul of the worse. Not a political rally, not a whites or blacks or Hispanics only church , not a election of the few, but a blessed neighborhood of believers is that church.

Many 'churches' today now preach Liberalism; - Instead of Biblical Christian doctrines.
One of the churches I attended a few years ago turned to Liberalism by getting a new minister.
I remember a conversation I had with a couple of people in the church and I asked them, Were they happy with the Liberalism being taught? Their response was 'What is Liberalism?'
This is one of the problems in the churches today ignorance of doctrine and the apostasy coming from the pulpits.

The Reformation brought out the concept of - Visible and Invisible church. But even Augustine referred to two types within churches. This is highlighted in the modern churches.
Then there is Christ's famous statement....
Matt 7:22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? 23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity."
Thus does the Lord identify the dichotomy to found in the pews and pulpits.
Indeed Satan would be falling over in his task if his apostates and religious reprobates were not disrupting the process of sound doctrines.

I'm surprised that the article didn't mention about Peddlers of the Word

Not all these people who make big bucks and maybe in the religious game for the money are televangelists❗👎💰

...Most charities are subject to some level of transparency, but not churches. That leaves it up to the members to demand transparency. If you meet resistance from the leadership, maybe you might consider that rather than a sheep who is being fed, you are one that is being shorn....
