Trump-Kim shake hands, commit to ‘complete denuclearization’

SINGAPORE (AP) — Clasping hands and forecasting future peace, President Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un committed Tuesday to “complete denuclearization” of the Korean Peninsula during the first meeting in history between a sitting U.S. president and a North Korean leader. Yet as Trump toasted the summit’s results, he faced mounting questions about whether he got too little and gave away too much — including an agreement to halt U.S. military exercises with treaty ally South Korea.

Meeting with staged ceremony on a Singapore island, Trump and Kim came together for a summit that seemed unthinkable months ago when the two nations traded nuclear threats. The gathering of the two unpredictable leaders marked a striking gamble by the American president to grant Kim long-sought recognition on the world stage in hopes of ending the North’s nuclear program.

Both leaders expressed optimism throughout roughly ...

Chris, as you read more of the Shields and Brooks commentary on the PBS NewsHour, you will see and many ways Trump is a lone wolf, who gives little care about the facts -- on just about everything!
One has a hard time figuring out what the Don is going to do!
Gregory Korte wrote:
Later, Tillerson appeared in a State Department auditorium to give a statement to reporters. He talked about the hard work it took to get North Korea to the table: ending President Obama's policy of "strategic patience" and replacing it with a maximum-pressure campaign to rally the world to impose punishing sanctions on the North Korean regime.

He thanked his diplomats, the military and the American people — but not Trump.

Showboater that we now have enough White House can't stand anyone else getting any credit.

David, the president met, historic meeting, Kim Jong Un, the leader of North Korea.
What’s your take?

David Brooks
So, I give him more credit than a lot other people that I’m reading. We were — and people who really knew the North Korean situation were terrified six, eight, 10 months ago that we were really heading in a bad direction and things — there was some danger of things spinning out of control.

And now that doesn’t seem to be the case. Now, there’s — tensions have settled. There seems to be no risk of any confrontation or war. And so, to me, that’s the big story, and that’s the lead and that’s a good thing.

Now, once you get down to the second and third paragraph, it begins to deteriorate quickly. And the things Trump said about the regime, calling a murderous dictator a tough guy, that’s horrific.

The way human rights are treated, the way he just flippantly tossed off the practice, the war games, is horrific. But, to me, those are serious deficits. He did a good thing in the worst possible way.....

Thanks Jim...I did read the article, but something needs to be kept in mind, and that is that he's not some lone, clueless wolf in this situation. All that he doesn't know, is covered by his panel of expert advisors who do. I'm not speaking of those he brought with him to Washington, who came aboard knowing little to nothing until they were briefed, but those already in the know, and high ranking military advisors he had to lean on throughout this. I doubt he's been bamboozled and the initial negotiations were only the beginning of what's hopefully to come. Honestly, what does the media expect? Everything at once? We're fortunate that rocket man is even cooperating on any level, but those sanctions must have been hitting them hard.
Hey, if it was OBama getting this done, 50' statues of his likeness would be being chiseled out of gold right now, along with his mug on Mount Rushmore.

Yes, Chris, you will find quite a few details about "the Glorious leader," in this opinion piece: ]] (Trump Was Outfoxed in Singapore)💩

As a Northerner, and who was also a Republican years ago - I thought I'd never say that a senator from a former Confederate State sounded like a rational Republican - but Bob Corker of Tennessee I think can deserve the honor❗👍

ABC Radio Online wrote:

Unfortunately Bob, I don't know if this is still longer true?

Several months ago, one of the news radio talking heads had a man on who escaped North Korea. I can't remember if he was some sort of government or military official, but will try to find it. He must have been one or the other, or some insider, obviously, because among other attrocities, he said soldiers would regularly go into schools and pick out girls for this guy, and take them to his palace where he uses them as (something) slaves. Yeah, nothing nice about of the most vicious dictators on planet Earth.

Boris Yeltsin ended the gulags by presidential degree, in 1992, East Germany , along with other Baltic states began the process of deSovietizing their countries.a year earlier. Refugees were pouring over the borders unhampered. The Soviet Union was dissolved on December 31,1991. Yelsin shipped and dismantled hundreds of ICBMs, shipped tons of weapons grade plutonium to the US. He removed most of the disintegrating submarine force off line because they were more a hazard afloat than in dry dock. The country went bankrupt. That is history.
I’m not advocating war, but this is as close to repeating war as Kennedy and Khrushchev cane to Cuba. We both blinked. Problem is negotiating was with back channels, experts and most of all players wanted to end the Cuban missile.
I believe we’re watching a bad actor, who’s out of his league, has no appreciation of history, just applauding a despot and hoping the can can be kicked down the road. But, with no notes, no witnesses , and having no preconceived notions, maybe nothing happened after all. But other than siding with the communists and twitting that war games are over and the DRNK can have our air base in Guam, no problems.

I agree with your suppositions. How someone regardless of the circumstances can say anything nice about someone as evil and the NK dictator is beyond me. He has murdered, tortured or imprisoned anyone he finds that names the name of Christ. Rarely has history revealed wickedness of his kind. If I thought it was possible to save millions of lives and the only thing I had to do was lie and deceive, I would pray that I would refrain from those lies and deception.

Wayfarer, would you like our guys to endure a ground invasion so that you can have your tribunals?

the dmz is a powder keg, either side could set off a war where millions instantly killed, seoul is right there, you know this.

Kim is the grandson.

He wasn't even nearly alive during the active war and there have been 3 generations since then in south korea.

these are all the grandchildren now.

it is a stalinist style communist dictaorship but it is fueled by false narratives and propoganda, much like what we are enudring here, just not absolute at this point as it is there.

remember when the berlin wall came down?

And let’s also pull out the troops at the DMZ. Trust (?) but verify. Please, take time to read history, the invasion of South Korea was horrific. For all the talk of cultural communism, how can anyone give a Stalinist communist country a pass when that is the Enemy! You think cultural communism is our problem? Look at the repressive, brutal governments of DRNK and China.
DJT can only say “ great things are happening “, and without notes related to his meeting with Kim, none were taken. We shut out South Korea and Japan. We think we have Kim on a mat and that brought him to the talks. No, he developed a 100 kiloton hydrogen bomb, has a rocket to reach Denver and since his testing collapsed his test mountain, Kim has all he needed to go a talk about the fact that he was a nuclear power, along with China and they now could fundamentally own and direct Asia. So go ahead pat DJT’ on the back, but nothing makes me more mad that to hear him call Kim a smart, tough and good negotiator. When he said tough, he’s not to be disputed. He had his brother, his uncle, numerous generals, and countless Christians and citizens, foreigners killed.
If this meeting holds promise, then wonderful but if as I suspect, it fails, then it falls on Kim and DJT.

Hey Jim, could be wrong, but I took it as a dig against dispensationalism, and maybe even Israel, considering North Korea's hatred of them as a state. Literal hermeneutics, minus any scripturally prophetic mention of North Korea = how can this story even be(?) Who knows. ☺

Isn't it great that the Don has found a new soulmate❗ He probably was getting to find it tedious hanging out with the likes of Jeffress and Falwell Jr.

How does this news item fit into the scheme of dispensationalists?

Problem is that lil' Kim has state owned media, so he can return home and put any spin he wants on the meeting. I mention this because I'm sure there's a spy or two in North Korea, and if Trump gets wind of any untruth or insult, etc., the heavy sanctions remain, the talks go dead, and lil' Kim starts firing rockets again.

So , let’s look at it this way, the Jong Family is like, if Hitler had children and say, Trump shook hands with Hitler’s grandson. It’s like , Germany has been beaten during WW2, but, his grandfather remained in power and transferred his power through the family line. Germany kept the conquered lands of Austria Poland, Holland and Ukraine .The consentration camps are still running , ethnic minorities are still being killed, and , Hitlers grandson now has a nuclear rocket arsenal.
In the US, we elected a aged player millionaire, who needs who after a long stumble, needs to look magnanimous. So, he meets “AH the third”, has a photo-op, calls him an honorable man, discontinues a 70 year joint military exercise with European free countries and says, “ oh, Germania Nazi countries will dismantle their nukes and let us know and we’ll take their word for it”. Seriously.
