Osteen’s Church Has a $90 Million Annual Budget
Mega-pastor Joel Osteen may not know theology very well, but he sure knows how to rake in the bucks. To put it another way, Osteen is an expert at getting your down-on-their-luck relatives to hand over their money to his "ministry." The proof is in the pudding, so they say, because the Houston Chronicle is reporting that Lakewood Church's annual budget is around 90 million dollars a year.

Lakewood Church's fiscal budget was revealed during the newspaper's series titled "The Preacher's Son." The series "explores the origins and spectacular growth of Houston's Lakewood Church under pastor Joel Osteen." However, the Chronicle and writer Katherine Blunt decided to run a separate piece breaking down the church's budget. ...

[Elders & Deacons]
Free from the love of money (1 Tim. 3:3 ; Tit. 1:7 ). Does he have his priorities straight? Is he seeking his significance, security, and primary satisfaction from material wealth? Is he involved in dishonest business practices? Is the amount of salary he receives the most important thing about his occupation? Is he seeking the office of elder for personal gain?

Speaking generally,
"Overall, America’s per capita wealth, health and education measures are mediocre for a highly industrialized nation. Well-being metrics, perceptions of corruption, quality and cost of basic services, are sliding, too. in the last three decades the middle class has been eviscerated and the younger generatios are seeping in debt and high rental and mortgage costs.

yet our rich pulpits will tell us how rich we are because riches to them is the fiat dollar. cuz it made them rich.

in reality we have a slowly collapsing petrodollar being replaced...and would they even know it?

what are riches in scripture?

land and children are inheritance from the Lord

no need for degenerating currency.... the trade can be in the fruit of thy labor.

and in that case a young man who owns a little plot in the country with no property taxes or HOA restrictions that can tend to his small animals and gardens everyday and trade with his neighbor freely.... can be far richer

than the debt slave model of the american west as things are.

in fact, one could argue that the original "americans" lived more closely to the man above and would not recognize the working man today forced to buy cars, computers, cell phones and faux degrees, changing jobs, health insurance constantly to keep up (while illegal immigrants receive free services, foods, degrees, etc on their tax dollar) --- and this is not wealth, when a man would just like to live as the man above but is not allowed.

for no man would be allo

2 Corinthians 2:17
For we are not as so many, peddling the word of God. But as of sincerity, but as of God, in the sight of God, we speak in Christ.
JFB Commentary wrote:

The whole Gospel must be delivered such as it is, without concession to men's corruptions, and without selfish aims, if it is to be blessed with success (Acts 20:27).
Perhaps it would be more accurate to point out not the person's income but his motivation as the above verse has it. I would assume that there could be a few peddlers who accurately give the Word, but something else in their lifestyle, shows that preaching the Word is just a business opportunity and doesn't have the proper dedication connected to it.

Rich-ness is relative. Most Americans are rich when compared to folks living in third-world countries, so be careful about throwing the 'rich' label around.
I agree with you. I remember once reading that to most of the world having electricity and running water would be considered being wealthy.

I think that loving money is more of a heart issue than a bank account thing. IOW, I can be dirt poor and love money or I can be very wealthy and not love money.

I think I could find examples of both in scripture.

But, if it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck, then it is probably a duck.

Anyway, good comment.

Mark 8:36 For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?

1 Timothy 6:10 For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

Matthew 4:9 And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me. 10 Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.

Jamesc greed is a problem that is brought up in the Bible

1 Corinthians 5:11-13
But now I am writing to you not to associate with anyone who bears the name of brother if he is guilty of sexual immorality or greed, or is an idolater, reviler, drunkard, or swindler—not even to eat with such a one. For what have I to do with judging outsiders? Is it not those inside the church whom you are to judge? God judges those outside. Purge the evil person from among you.----ESV

If the Church you're now attending has a greedy pastor you really couldn't participate in a communion service at that particular Church. Unless that Pastor obstains from being there and that's no church to attend❗

Who do you say that Christ is & why does one need to flee from the justified wrath of God too God. Are some important questions to ask, as that will reveal a lot about the person you are engaging with. To see who do they think Jesus is by His truth claims He makes.; Mat 16:13-17. Does one think they are truly are a good person, who only tells little White Lies only; Pro 20:6!

Joel Osteen nevers talks about sin, or why one isn’t in a right relationship with Christ, if one isn’t Born Again from Up Above Alone. He never talks about the dier need of doing a 180, through repentance.

The Jesus he talks about is the false Jesus of the Health, Wealth & Prosperity Gospel, that = Gal 1:6-9 amen.

“"There's always the question of how much money is too much for a pastor to earn," said Carl Trueman, a pastor and professor of church history at the Westminster Theological Seminary in Pennsylvania. "When you're looking at his lavish private lifestyle, I'd say that's too much."...”

This was a missed opportunity for redirecting the conversation to more important matters.

We should stick with addressing Osteen’s theological/doctrinal issues rather that debating obvious matters of opinion.

BTW, many men of the OT were rich, yet we don’t second guess them.

The link for the following excellent article is also in the article that SA has put up❗
This is really an excellent article done by a writer of the Houston Chronicle - - Osteen's hometown newspaper.
Katherine Blunt wrote:
....It's religion as big business, run by a close-knit family that excels at promoting Osteen as an earnest, folksy everyman. He is Lakewood's most valuable asset, the embodiment of the message itself.

Not everyone is sold. Some religious scholars and church watchdogs say Osteen's wealth clashes with Christian teachings about the corrupting effects of worldly riches, and that Lakewood's high-powered marketing exploits the vulnerable.
