65% of Public School 8th Graders Not Proficient in Reading; 67% Not Proficient in Math

Sixty-five percent of the eighth graders in American public schools in 2017 were not proficient in reading and 67 percent were not proficient in mathematics, according to the National Assessment of Educational Progress test results released by the U.S. Department of Education.

The results are far worse for students enrolled in some urban districts.

Among the 27 large urban districts for which the Department of Education published 2017 NAEP test scores, the Detroit public schools had the lowest percentage of students who scored proficient or better in math and the lowest percentage who scored proficient or better in reading. ...

Probably just as well that public school kids can't read some of the garbage they are given by their schools.

Penned, I have no clue what you're point is, this thread is on illiteracy and lousy arithmetic. I'm pretty sure no one is remaining silent on evils, but we can't keep track of every evil that happens in the world.

let's examine again... "why did police keep quiet on s## attack by Syrian UK refugees? Girl, 14, assaulted by a gang."...

what does the bible say about people remaining silence when there is injustice?

it is a sin of omission...

"oh, but God, didn't I pray the grandest of prayers?"

"true religion is to visit the orphan and the widow in their distress"

"you shall be known for the love of the brethren"

Great comments. Not every family can afford to homeschool or use a Christian school. Not every child is ready to read before he or she arrives at school age. Parents, fathers expressly, are charged with not frustrating their children but bringing them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord (Ephesians 6:4). In the Post-Fall, there is no perfect way to do this and no perfect educational system or choice.

As we've found, a better public school is an indicator of better neighborhoods and better neighborhood kids. There are kids and families trapped in there, per the above. For all concerned, it is best that each school district educate well.

But years of liberalism churning out teachers and driving what is taught and how it is taught has taken its toll on the system. How can that be overcome? It is the Lord's punishment on this nation for pursuing the gods of sex, self, and Satan. We must turn to the Lord in repentance. Perhaps He will have mercy that we perish not? (Jonah 3:9)

Title: Why did police keep quiet on sex attack by Syrian UK refugees? Girl, 14, was assaulted by gang but it was kept off the crime list covered by BBC Newsnight team...

seems like the test scores are the last of their worries...

Same problem in the UK.

"Almost half of children are leaving primary school unable to read and write properly, new government tables show, with just five per cent of schools achieving a high standard overall." (

Why should the Lord bless nations who reject Him?

Today's generation in charge of the western nations, including politicians are showing signs of degeneration. In the UK our Health Service, as well as schools and other societal institutions are failing. We note how the churches are failing both to teach the Bible and reach the people.

Btw: I heard a news item today that stated how anti-semitism is growing in Europe and in Britain even in government circles. The last big outbreak of this was in Europe just before WWII. Is this an omen for WWIII?
Wars and rumours of wars?

Hour of temptation?
Rev 3:10 Because thou hast kept the word of my patience, I also will keep thee from the hour of temptation, which shall come upon all the world, to try them that dwell upon the earth. 11 Behold, I come quickly: hold that fast which thou hast, that no man take thy crown."

Come Lord Jesus, come soon. Amen.

Chips off the old blocks. The old canards of “ them schools ain’t teachin anything to nobodies “, ummm, the destruction of the family has left at least 2 or 3 generations hopelessly without the desire to do better than the last generation. Strong mom and Dad families make strong and smart kids.

That is total insanity. Why are not the parents teaching their children to read before the children begin their educational studies? I was taught by my parents to read before I started my educational studies.

I did and I even ran for local school board to make a difference, but sadly the gov't school didn't want the help of a Christian mother. You are blessed to have not attended a gov't school. They've removed all knowledge of God which leaves them empty of wisdom and we're seeing the fruit of that decision. Parents, pull your children out of the gov't schools.
