1 million North Americans ditched Facebook last quarter

Facebook made a startling revelation today: for the first time ever, it lost a million users in the US and Canada in Q4 2017, bringing its North American base down to 184 million.

That’s not a huge number in the grand scheme of things – and heck, Facebook even saw an increase in daily user audience by 32 million last quarter – but it indicates that people are actively leaving the social network and freeing themselves from its shackles to lead a better life.

Why are people quitting Facebook? The rise of fake news, meddling by Russian agencies, and plenty of content in your feed that you don’t remember subscribing to may all be to blame.

The drop in users could also help explain Facebook’s recent moves to fix its machinery – it’s promised to surface more content from your contacts instead of from brands and publishers, it’s trying to crowdsource help to identify trusted media outlets, it’s ...

That was my post and wasn’t being contentious just asking the obvious

You have appeared to have a bad experience with FB, and I would have gladly left it if I were in your shoes.

I have no desire to be an advocate for FB as it matters not to me whether people use it or not. I am not a fan of what seems to me of people somehow implying that they are more spiritual because they don’t have FB in their lives. There are several things that make a number of folks more spiritual than I but not having FB is not one of them

I went from checking it about twice a week to nearly everyday when grandkids were introduced into my life and have a Daughter-in-law that posts about them frequently. I don’t get notifications telling me someone posted because that would be a huge annoyance

Unlike many others, apparently, there is much edification in FB for me as the vast majority of my friends are Christians and will post Scripture, inspirational stories or quotes, Spurgeon articles , etc.

To answer your question, I don’t see people’s persona being that much different on FB but that is just my experience and may be due to who is on my friends list. Not perfect people but mainly Christians who love the Lord

"seems a bit incongruous"
You rely on presuppositions in both of your comments thus far, this last comment can easily be refuted by saying that I was on Facebook for over 10 years when I was both unsaved and saved. Therefore I do have the necessary experience to be able to comment very knowledgeably on the subject.
Question for you;
Are you just trying to be continuous?
Do you use Facebook?
Have you not noticed the trend that people tend to be more bold, rude, obnoxious, and categorically a different person (creating a false persona and lifestyle) on Facebook?

I personally use zero social media and couldn't be happier about it! 😊😉😂

Frank;
Thanks for the encouragement, brother! We seem to agree on many issues/comments on SA 👍🏻 I too would disagree with that pastors reasons for banning Facebook. Although it is as aid to sin, it doesn't cause sin. A cell phone or a television are also aids for sins and I doubt he would outlaw those.

"yo do realize",
That point is void. He point is not do people know your name on Facebook, the point is that people are more bold behind a computer screen than they would be in person.... plus I willing to bet that 99.99% on people on Facebook do NOT know all of their "friends".

Backwoods Duck Farmer,
I agree 100% and that is pretty much my line of reasoning as well. Such a large amount of time wasted on such futile, meaningless things in the view of eternity! Amen to the superficial relationship part as well!! 👍🏻

Amen Frank and Chase! I don't use any type of social media either. God has given us a relatively short life to glorify Him and build His kingdom. Why flush hours and years of it down the drain of superficial relationships?

that you have to use your real name on Facebook, there is a reason it is called Facebook.

Chase,

What an excellent comment! I have never even been on a Facebook page although all of my family except my wife are users. Like you, I have mixed feeling about it. I can certainly not remotely say it is sinful in and of itself. I do believe that the recent emphasis on social media is likely harmful to our youths. It is rare that I see a young person without their phones in their hands. And I understand it is a means to brainwash?

Quite a while back SA posted an article about a pastor that banned his staff from using Facebook. Apparently he concluded that many users of Facebook would come across people they had had personal relationships with in the past and they would renew those relationships because of the Facebook contact. So, he felt it was a potential cause for adultery, etc.

I didn't buy his reasoning, but thought it was very interesting.

Perhaps the drop in Facebook users is due to time management, idolatry, gossip, immoral images, useless debating, fake news, social agenda propaganda and an overall waste of time. I'm NOT saying that Facebook is inherently sinful, however what I am saying is that it contains all of the above mentioned aspects and all to often takes time away from edifying deeds like Bible reading, serious Bible Study, serving the local church, serving ones family, and so on. On the other hand Facebook and other social media outlets can be outlet for ministry and Christian witness, however i have seen the difficulty in evangelizing or even posting about your Christian worldview/thoughts. Why? People will say things behind a computer screen that they would not say to your face. I truly believe every Christian should examine why they use Facebook, how often they use it, what sort of things they are viewing either intentionally or unintentionally; then with these in consideration make a prayerful, discerning decision on whether or not Facebook is edifying and so on.
I personally use zero social media and couldn't be happier about it! 😊😉😂
