Lawyers Faced With Emojis and Emoticons Are All ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Lawyers gathered at the Atlanta office of a big law firm were debating a head-scratching legal question. What does the emoji known as the “unamused face” actually mean?

They couldn’t even agree that the emoji in question—it has raised eyebrows and a frown—looked unamused.

“Everybody said something different,” recalls Morgan Clemons, 33 years old, a regulatory compliance lawyer at Aldridge Pite LLP who organized the gathering last summer at Bryan Cave LLP, called “Emoji Law 101.”

She didn’t even know that’s what the emoji was named. “I don’t think many of us in the room ever thought that’s what it was.” ...

@Ignominious Emirakan, I, as well as most peopel on SA ignore Steve Doring, since he is as negative as all get out.
I asked him a question on another thread and he never answered. This is probably just a place where he can blow off some steam and vent!!

I think curmudgeon Frank noted that he hardly ever reads the whole news item-
We may comment on how disgusting overall world news is with impunity.

I think this has everything to do with evangelism, especially in the most resistent Millennials age bracket. Emojis are HUGE right now, and they are an important way that many communicate. How can we reach people with the Gospel if we don't speak or text their language?

Not just lawyers are confused about what certain emojis mean; this has already been discussed among computing types. Another point of confusion: font glyphs for the same code point may differ across platforms.

Japanese telecoms invented emojis, which were incorporated into Unicode 6.0 ca. 2010. There are other symbols which seem more decorative than useful, while others are Japan-specific.

Christians using computer Bibles or studying manuscripts should be thankful for Unicode, for since its initial release, Hebrew and Greek alphabets have been supported.

Hi QC, no word yet on any mental evaluations, etc. I've been following the story closely, and read updates just this morning. After all of those years in captivity, it's astonishing that their neighbors, even next door neighbors had no idea there were 13 children living in the home, and were only aware of a few of the girls, but hadn't seen any of them in years.

The woman who bought their old, foreclosed home in Texas said that the bank made her sign some agreement saying that if she went inside, the bank wouldn't be responsible for any health problems as a result of breathing in the stench. The new owner said there was feces literally everywhere, and smeared all over walls, etc., and that they had to dump straight bleach onto all of the floors just to try and mask the stench so they could work inside. Really horrible.

So glad they are finally free, but yes, a lot of recovery needed, physical and emotional, for sure.

Agree, Chris. What a horror. Did anyone ever disclose what was wrong with the parents In terms of mental illness or extreme sin problem? The impact, I'm afraid, will go much further. Homeschoolers are now looked at in suspicion. The parents claimed to Pentecostal, which then taints the view of Christ and His bride. And they were followers of the quiverfull movement, which I feel is trying to appropriate God's blessings through works rather than the way Solomon intended in Ps 127.

By the way...those poor Turpin children. I'm so glad that the 17yr old girl had the courage to steal an old cell phone and call 911. They've lived in horror since birth, for the most part, but it seems life got progressively worse. Their muscles were wasting away from lack of nutrition, they weren't allowed to use the bathroom, and they were only allowed one shower per year, not to mention the shackles, ropes, complete isolation, and who knows what else. Poor kids. Not one family member has stepped up, or even called to offer to adopt, etc. I'm glad the state did it's best to keep them together in groups. The 24yr old has like a 1st grade education. So sad...

At first glance, this emoji reminded me of those 3D pictures where you have to sort of unfocus your eyes on it in order to view the image popping out of the paper. I wasn't getting it at first, but then saw the image, but unamused? Poor choice. I think a much simpler, and recognizable one would be: : /

I'm not even sure why I'm commenting on this nonsense...ha-ha.

Me too, honestly.

Seems like a modern day heiroglyphics problem.
