California lawmakers call for more homeschool oversight
Homeschooling opponents in California seized on the horrific case of child abuse discovered Jan. 14 in Riverside County to call for more oversight of parents who teach their children at home. But homeschooling advocates say policymakers need to consider one key fact obscured by emotional reactions to the Tupin case: None of the organizations that track child abuse list homeschooling as a risk factor.
Police discovered what media outlets have dubbed a âhouse of horrorsâ when one of David and Louise Turpinâs 13 children escaped through a window in their stucco-sided, suburban home, which looked completely normal from the outside. But inside, investigators found signs of extreme abuse amid filthy conditions, with piles of human waste next to furniture where the parents had shackled the children. News reports quickly focused on a mitigating factor child safety advocates claim enabled the abuse: The...
Theoretically, it makes sense - in a world where folks are ethical the people who know a turf are the greatest ones to regulate it and the public with the best empathetic will be the ones with lots of experience in it.
The Turpin case will be a tragedy for the homeschooling parents of the "People's Republic of California", as it will be used as an excuse to ban or strictly control homeschoolers and a stick to beat them with.
This is the same "People's Republic of California" that is giving the vote to anyone, including illegal immigrants, who happens to have a valid driver's licence, thus ensuring a complete dominance for the governing party there, and will fine restaurateurs and waiters / waitresses $1,000 for giving out one use plastic drinking straws!!!! Care workers in homes, and the owners of those homes, already face prohibitive fines and sanctions if they do not give their elderly people full Transgender and LGBT rights, even allowing elderly men into ladies restrooms!!!
The madness of this state will no doubt force the homeschooling children into the LGBT Transgender abortion public schools, with, but most likely without the consent of the parents!!! We must indeed pray for the godly Bible Gospel preaching churches and Christians in California, as they face these increasingly difficult times.
Pshh just an excuse for the government to stick their nose in homeschooling! The fact that these kids were homeschooled has nothing to do with the atrocity that occurred. Praying for these kids, hoping they have the Comforter and know Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior! Grace and peace to them.
This terrible situation has nothing to do with homeschooling. What about the thousands of physically abused children who go to public schools? This is not a schooling issue, this is an issue of crazy parents who do not take care of there children correctly. A common occurrence throughout the US.
For the transgression of a land many are the princes thereof: but by a man of understanding and knowledge the state thereof shall be prolonged. (Proverbs 28:2). Too much sin results in too much government.
I would think most people would find this a very good article - - including homeschoolers. It looks like it contains some good advice to me, anyway.
Leigh Jones wrote: In a message to members and supporters Tuesday, HSLDA president Mike Smith acknowledged reaction to the Turpin case could cause a backlash in public opinion about homeschooling. His advice: Engage with the community so they can see for themselves that homeschoolers care deeply about their childrenâs wellbeing.
âBe confident. Be friendly,â Smith wrote. âKeep encouraging your kids to go outside and play. And go on being involved in your neighborhood and your larger community.â
