Services at the Coachella Valley Church begin and end with the Lord’s Prayer.
In between, there is the sacrament.
‚ÄúBreathe deep and blow harder,‚ÄĚ intoned Pastor Grant Atwell after distributing marijuana joints to 20 worshipers on a recent Sunday. ‚ÄúNail the insight down, whether you get it from marijuana or prayer. Consider what in your own life you are thankful for.‚ÄĚ
There is no biblical foundation for a sacrament of any kind. There are two (three, if you count foot washing as some churches do) church ordinances, but no sacraments whether reefer is involved or not.
new booklet, The Cross and the Marijuana Leaf by Linda Nathan, is a timely warning about the use of recreational marijuana. It is available from LighthouseTrails.com. Following is an excerpt: ‚ÄúThe current weed is immensely more powerful than it used to be‚ÄĒto the point of being hallucinogenic. In their book Going to Pot, William Bennett and Robert White explain: ‚ÄėLet‚Äôs acknowledge that today‚Äôs marijuana is at least five times stronger than the marijuana of the past. The THC levels of today‚Äôs marijuana average around 15 percent, but go as high as 20 percent and above in the dispensaries found throughout the states that have legalized it for ‚Äėmedicinal‚Äô or recreational use. The marijuana of today is simply not the same drug it was in the 60s, 70s or 80s, much less the 1930s. It is much more potent, leading to a great many more health risks.‚Äô The Marijuana Potency Project at the University of Mississippi has found levels of THC as high as 37 percent. That is a growth of a psychoactive ingredient from 3 and 4 percent a few decades ago to close to 40 percent. Tetrahydrocannabinol or THC is the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana that gives the ‚Äėhigh.‚Äô Synthetic versions can be very harmful. ¬Ņdifference between 3 to 5%THC&13 to 30%THC? ¬°12 oz glass of beer vs 12oz glass of vodoka!
Marijuana advocates often point to Gen 1:11 (‚ÄúLet the earth bring forth grass‚ÄĚ) &other verses (Gen1:29; 3:18) to justify the smoking of what they refer to as ‚Äúgrass.‚ÄĚ They claim that God declared marijuana ‚Äúgood.‚ÄĚ However, He also made sand (which is good), but if we eat it by the spoonful we shouldn‚Äôt complain if we get sick. Those who inhale the burning fumes of a weed shouldn‚Äôt complain when it mentally impairs them. It is called ‚Äúdope‚ÄĚ for a reason. When the Church forsakes the proclamation of God‚Äôs Law, iniquity floods the land. Daniel Webster stated: ‚ÄúIf truth is not diffused, error will be. If God& His Word are not known &received, the devil &his works will gain the ascendancy. If the evangelical volume does not reach every hamlet, the pages of a corrupt & licentious literature will. ‚ÄúIf the power of the gospel is not felt throughout the length &breadth of this land, anarchy &misrule, degradation &misery, corruption and darkness will reign without mitigation or end.‚ÄĚ -Tozer ‚ÄúGod‚Äôs justice stands forever against the sinner in utter severity. The vague& tenuous hope that God is too kind to punish the ungodly has become a deadly opiate for the consciences of millions. It hushes their fears&allows them to practice all pleasant forms of iniquity while death approaches..."
