Residents flee as flames approach wealthy California enclave

Residents piled into cars and fled on Saturday, turning downtown Santa Barbara into "a ghost town" as surging winds drove one of the biggest fires in California's history toward the city and the nearby wealthy enclave of Montecito.

The mandatory evacuations around Montecito and neighboring Summerland came as winds that had eased a day earlier roared back at around 30 mph (48 kph), with gusts to about 60 mph (97 kph). Firefighters sprayed water onto hot spots sparked by wind-blown embers. Firefighters also drove to the historic San Ysidro Ranch in yellow fire trucks as heavy smoke rose from the coastal hills, blotting out the blue skies. ...

Anne, the Wild West

My point is that God controls nature.

There were present at that season some that told him of the Galilæans, whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices. And Jesus answering said unto them, Suppose ye that these Galilæans were sinners above all the Galilæans, because they suffered such things? I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish. (Luke 13:1-3)

Yolanda, Matthew 5:4 says "For He causes His sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous."

Nature happens all around us, as SF said - a fallen world suffers and groans.

That being said, there are particular events of nature that God has used as punishment. We have several earthquakes listed in Scripture, destruction of cities by fire, floods... So I believe there is enough Scriptural evidence to say these events can happen under both a sinful, fallen world's nature and events used by God as punishment. It would be prudent at the same time to be sure we don't turn into Job's "friends" and wag our fonger at every event. It's God's business one way or the other.

Quiet Christian, I don't believe there is any doubt amongst believers that there is a state in the US that's without sin - the cancer is everywhere. Back to the Sodom and Gomorrah analogy - the whole area was rife with sin but God took out the bastion of their pride. The Chinese have a proverb: the nail that sticks out gets hammered back in place. S&G's sins had apparently come to a head, above the rest of the region. God dealt with it in particular. I look forward to the day He comes to set finally eradicate the scar's of sin and establish His enduring kingdom. Come so

Yolanda,
Not quite what I meant. I'm just saying that not every fire or tornado or hurricane is punishment. We live in a fallen world.

I don't necessarily equate this fire with the supernatural. We live in a fallen world. Montana, Wyoming, N. Dakota, etc experience fires every year. It comes with the territory. Sometimes it's an act of God. Other times it's just nature.
" Other times it's just nature." Uhmmm.
So nature acts independent of the Creator?

Tenn Ken, you won't get your answer. As you know, there isn't a good response because all parts of the country have failed to live up to the demands of God's holiness and glory. Some will point to the South's continuation of slavery but ignore the racism that still exists in the North. Hypocrites indeed!

It is always dangerous ground to see disaster and assume that it is God's direct punishment for specific sin. Job and John 9 show a different reality. Yet we all need to keep in mind thag God is not mocked...and what we all can expect to reap.

While some could point to the destruction of the South during and after the war as some kind of proof, no one points to the bad theology championed during the Second Great Awakening spread by the likes of Finney burned Christianity out of New England once the false nature of this charismatic revival proved itself to be just that. Sherman's path of destruction was rebuilt but evangelists are still working in New England.

My original point still stands. California needs repentance but so does the rest of the nation. The question isn't "why California?" It's "why only California?"

JC from SoDak, Just as I ask Jon. Show Me chapter and verse. As for rebellion to ones country Thats crap and you know it! The Southern States succeeded from the union they helped form. Ken from Tenn...... tho not living in the south anymore, I spent the first 20 so.e years of my life there. I'm a die hard southern boy...... Slavery goes against scripture. Insurrection against and rebellion towards your country is evil.....and that's the tip of the iceberg. We both know that the war wasnt fought over slavery. And beings ur from the south, I'm sure u realize that in many parts of the south the feelings and hostility still run strong.....I know I'm not Jon, but that's just an insider's view!

Jon, Why do you equate the South with, Rome,Pompeii, Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan? Lay out for me the "serious violation of Gods law", for me.

Fire, Fire, Fire! Rome burned, Pompei burned with volcanic flows, Nazi Germany burned with incendiary bombing, Imperial Japan burned with incendiary bombing and nuclear holocaust, the American South burned with the flames of civil war; Richmond, Colombia SC, and a large swathe of fire through Georgia, Stalingrad bombed and burned to smithereens. All these were guilty of serious violations of God's laws. We in 21st century America are certainly not immune, and the warnings are loud and clear.

Great post, IE. Perhaps Mr. Hawking should consider a young age of the earth and the more rapid expansion of the sun that expected? Or from the Apostle John's explanation--

And the fourth Angel poured out his vial on the sun, and it was given to him to torment men with heat of fire,And men boiled in great heat, and blasphemed the Name of God, which hath power over these plagues, and they repented not to give him glory. - Revelation 16:8-9

Professor Stephen Hawking warns 'the end of the world is nigh' and Earth could be engulfed in a 'ball of fire' - Mirror Online

http://www.mirror.co.uk/science/ball-fire-professor-stephen-hawking-11494353

Esteemed physicist Professor Stephen Hawking has dramatically warned 'the end of the world is nigh'.

The Cambridge University-based genius claims we have got less than 600 years left as a species to do something before a “ball of fire” engulfs the Earth.

In a video appearance at the 2017 Tencent WE Summit in Beijing on Sunday, the world-renowned scientist warned that overcrowding and energy consumption could bring about a fiery end to the planet within 600 years.

The end would come in a “ball of fire,”

To save itself, mankind must take a cue from American TV series Star Trek and “boldly go where no one has gone before,” he said in the appearance.

Professor Hawking has predicted the end of civilisation - on earth
& says we have got less than 600 years left as a species
&sees an answer in Breakthrough Starshot, the $100 million research and engineering program announced in 2016
: “The idea behind this innovation is to have the nanocraft ride on the light beam.."

Well, &
Better way to avoid flames of doom.

Anne of the W.W.

Excellent comment. I am reminded of several instances in the Bible where God uses fire and rain to judge. The great flood and Sodom and Gomorrah are two such examples...that isn't to say God uses weather every time as a means of judgment - Job 37:13 comes to mind.

Great point, Sister Wild West Anne. There are many reasons why the Lord's actions in California should be seen as a general call to repentance in light of vast sin.

I argue that the call to repentance and faith in Christ doesn't stop at the agricultural inspection stations marking the state border but extends across the nation, North America, and the whole world. Are we less deserving of disaster no matter where we live? The entire Gulf Coast and all of Florida took a pounding this past hurricane season. What and where is next?

While sin is sin to God, not everyone is Sodom & Gomorrah. So in the facts of our humanity on this planet Earth, there are offenses that we are to judge against humanity as more wrong than other offenses. Infanticide (largest abortion clinics are in CA), redistribution of wealth or theivery (CA taxation, use of imminent domain), sexual immorality (CA, check)... That state has not just silently slid into evil but has proudly shouted from the mountain tops their support for anything contrary to the rules of God's morality. They have been a proud bastion of perversion, murder, thievery & twisted minds.

First they are thrown into a drought; then floods; now fires & the rainy season is on it's way. May the Lord, indeed, call many to Himself before He closes this act.

Amen, Guy from MS!

Are their sins really greater than ours, though? After all, we know better but still sin. Whatsoever a man soweth is also what he reaps. I can't question God's fury on the ungodly, but I do thank Him in Christ for not doing the same to me.

Js 5:1 Go to now, ye rich men, weep and howl for your miseries that shall come upon you.
2 Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are motheaten.
3 Your gold and silver is cankered; and the rust of them shall be a witness against you,

and shall eat your flesh as it were fire.

Ye have heaped treasure together for the last days.
4 Behold, the hire of the labourers who have reaped down your fields, which is of you kept back by fraud, crieth:
and the cries of them which have reaped are entered into the ears of the Lord of sabaoth.
5 Ye have lived in pleasure on the earth,
and been wanton; ye have nourished your hearts, as in a day of slaughter.
6 Ye have condemned and killed the just; and he doth not resist you.
7 Be patient therefore, brethren, unto the coming of the Lord. Behold, the husbandman waiteth for the precious fruit of the earth, and hath long patience for it,
until he receive the early and latter rain.
8 Be ye also patient; stablish your hearts:
for the coming of the Lord draweth nigh.

It's an allegory of the flames of hell. God speaks but men will not listen. That is, most men. Hopefully some will be shaken enough to begin to seek God. Of course, the rich will find it difficult, for it is easier for a camel......etc.
