Reformed theologian, pastor R.C. Sproul dies

Robert Charles “R.C.” Sproul, the Reformed theologian, pastor, teacher, and lecturer who founded and chaired Ligonier Ministries and authored close to 100 books, including The Holiness of God, died Thursday. He was 78. Sproul was known for delivering uncompromising messages on the holiness and sovereignty of God, in his writing, video teaching series, and as a regular speaker at Ligonier’s national conferences in Orlando, Fla. Ligonier’s mission is “helping Christians know what they believe, why they believe it, how to live it, and how to share it,” he once said. Born in Pittsburgh in 1939, Sproul graduated from Westminster College, which he attended on a football scholarship. A fellow student at Westminster nudged him on his path to discipleship. Sproul told Christianity Today in 2002 that one evening during his freshman year, just as he had finished buying some cigarettes from a dormitory vending ...

Todd Friel's "homage" to R C was anticipatory
&
Evocative.

tinysa.com/sermon/1218171420404

Went looking in my library to dig up old tapes, & TableTalk issues from decades past

Found some John Gerstner teachings that reminded me of how teachers can have profound influence -
R C had exact intonations of his favorite teacher , Gerstner.
Unconscious mimicry of gravelly voice.
In same way-
Many will deliver themes hearing the "scratch scratch " of chalk in the back of their mind as they evoke Sproul's didactics.
🎓Graduation day celebration for a great teacher.

USA Today had a very good article on RC Sproul. His last tweet shows a greater understanding and was more to the point considering some other people's activities on that social media.
Adelle M. Banks wrote:
In what appears to be his last tweet, on Dec. 1, Sproul wrote about his belief in eternity:

“When God writes our names in the ‘Lamb’s Book of Life,’ He doesn’t do it with an eraser handy. He does it for eternity.”

we certainly hope these verses don't apply:

Matthew 7: 21
Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.
22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?
23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

His lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.

Philippians 1:21-23

21 For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.

22 But if I live in the flesh, this is the fruit of my labour: yet what I shall choose I wot not.

23 For I am in a strait betwixt two, having a desire to depart, and to be with Christ; which is far better:

He ran the good race and was used of God. I’m sure he is seeing now to die is gain.

Prayers for his loved ones grieving.

He will be greatly missed, his teaching helped me understand so many key doctrines. His ministry and books reached millions of people. He fought the good fight, kept the faith, and finished the race.

He is experiencing inexpressible joy. He fought the good fight, and finished the race. May the elect do likewise.
From a twitter feed---This is the final line from RCSproul's final sermon on Hebrews 2:1-4, 11/26/2017:

"I pray with all my heart that God will awaken each one of us today to the sweetness, the loveliness, the glory of the gospel declared by Christ."

Sad for us, wonderful for him. He is in Heaven. Prayers for his family, especially his wife Vesta for the mourning to come. A true defender of the Gospel, he will be missed.

R.C. Sproul wrote:
Since the fall, every human being born into this world as a natural son of Adam arrives “DOA.” He is “dead on arrival” in a spiritual sense when he is born. But this spiritual death is not the same as biological death, though biological death is also the inevitable destiny of every sinning person. So, though we arrive “DOA” in a spiritual sense, we nevertheless arrive biologically alive. We live out our days on this planet on death row, living under the burden of the death sentence that is imposed on us for sin....

When the contrast between the first Adam and the last Adam, Jesus Christ, is worked out in the New Testament, we see in the work of Christ the conquest over the last enemy — death. The Puritan Divine John Owen wrote a classic book titled The Death of Death in the Death of Christ. Owen was saying that, in Christ’s death, He took upon Himself the curse that is inseparably linked to the punitive measure of death itself. Yet for those who put their trust in Christ, that curse is removed, so that now, for all who are in Christ, death is no longer a curse. Its sting has been removed....
