The Dead Sea Scrolls discovery — still riveting after 70 years
For many people, biblical scholarship — with its archaic languages and ancient texts — is boring stuff.

But that’s not true of the Dead Sea Scrolls, discovered by Bedouin shepherds in 1947 in Judean wilderness caves near Jerusalem. The discovery of the ancient Jewish religious texts 70 years ago created an immediate public sensation and an international tale of secrecy and intrigue rivaling the exploits of two fictional super sleuths: Ian Fleming’s James Bond and Daniel Silva’s Gabriel Allon.

Some scholars declared the ancient parchment texts — written mainly in Hebrew or Aramaic 2,100 to 2,300 years ago and wrapped in linen and coated with wax — predicted and validated Christian theological claims about Jesus of Nazareth. ...

The SA reference is a short, interesting article about them. I will point out a few things that were left out. The Catholics did not let the Jews the Dead Sea Scrolls for quite a while. The Benedictines kept them from them. National Geographic made an interesting documentary about the Dead Sea Scrolls a couple years back, you can see the whole thing -- of all places on Catholic High School site. But considering the Romish involvement in the Dead Sea scroll story, perhaps it isn't all that surprising. Anyway the documentary is quite interesting and videos of many of the places that the Scrolls were discovered and related sites. It does last for 45 minutes (Dead Sea Scrolls - National Geographic Documentary). It was viewable on my Android tablet. It also included a transcript which was just so-so. Or from the secular YouTube site, (Dead Sea Scrolls - National Geographic Documentary)

It's time to brush up on your Hebrew and Aramaic! (The Dead Sea Scrolls Digital Library)

Exciting tale of opening up the area so these types of finds could be documented.

This month is the centennial of the Battle of Beersheba which saw the British capture of this strategic town from the Ottomans. It opened the way for the defeat of the Ottomans at the Battle of Megiddo the next year, which sounded the death knell of 700 years of Muslim control of “Palestine.” The way was thus paved for the Jews’ return to the land in significant numbers and the founding of the modern state of Israel 30 years later. In the Battle of Beersheba, October 31, 1917, a force of 800 Australian light horse made a frontal assault against roughly 4,000 Ottoman forces who were well dug in and led by German officers. (Light horse are different from cavalry in that they are mounted riflemen, using their horses as transportation rather than attack.) The 4th Light Horse Brigade had already ridden 60 miles across the desert that day, but in the late afternoon they attacked, riding more than two miles across desert in the face of artillery, rifle, and machine gun fire. They rode their horses at a walk the first mile, then charged at a full gallop, supported by British artillery...
gutsy Australian cavalry charge !
