Navy Returns to Compasses and Pencils to Help Avoid Collisions at Sea

Urgent new orders went out earlier this month for United States Navy warships that have been plagued by deadly mishaps this year.

More sleep and no more 100-hour workweeks for sailors. Ships steaming in crowded waters like those near Singapore and Tokyo will now broadcast their positions as do other vessels. And ships whose crews lack basic seamanship certification will probably stay in port until the problems are fixed.

All seemingly obvious standards, military officials say, except that the Navy only now is rushing the remedies into effect after two collisions in two months left 17 sailors dead, despite repeated warnings about the looming problems from congressional watchdogs and the Navy’s own experts dating to 2010. ...

ABC News Radio wrote:
The U.S. Navy has relieved the USS John S. McCain’s top two officers for a “loss of confidence” following the deadly collision in August that killed 10 sailors....

“The commanding officer, Cmdr. Alfredo J. Sanchez, and executive officer, Cmdr. Jessie L. Sanchez, of the guided-missile destroyer USS John S. McCain were relieved of their duties by Vice Adm. Phil Sawyer, commander, Seventh Fleet, on Oct. 11,” said a statement from the Navy’s Seventh Fleet. “Both were relieved due to a loss of confidence.”

The McCain’s collision was the second deadly Navy collision in two months after the destroyer USS Fitzgerald collided with a Philippine-flagged merchant vessel, killing seven sailors aboard. Following that collision, the ship’s commanding officer, executive officer and senior enlisted sailor were also relieved of their duties for a similar loss of confidence....

In late August, the collisions led to the removal of Vice Adm. Joseph P. Aucoin as the head of the Navy’s Seventh Fleet....

Know what the Letters "DC" stand for in David Cameron? = "Defence Cuts"

David Cameron, when PM of UK, and the morons at Westminster has sunk the Navy - Shot down the Airforce - And Killed the Army.

When WWIII comes in a few years time The UK will be defenseless.
(So will Europe, Nato and Canada)

So they may as well return to old ways since modern ways are Liberalist and therefore insipid, vapid and anemic.
Plenty politics but no leadership.

Perhaps wooden ships would better suit the wooden heads of todays politicians.

"Returning to the basics" is a good, basic remedy. In my day, being able to plot relative motion either on a maneuvering board or on the radar scope head were basic skills any deck officer simply had to know to be considered qualified to stand watch on his own. Understanding relative motion is absolutely key to avoiding collision. Then there's the inherent problem of ignoring the Captain's standing orders regarding Closest Point of Approach, but that simply is hard to address because it's more of a culture issue than anything else.
Likewise for us Christians, "Thus saith the Lord, Stand in the ways and behold, and ask for the old way, which is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls..." (Jer 6:16). So often the new fangled thinking and approaches become all the rage. But that "old way," like Wisdom, calls to us as the way to life. Just like the U.S. Navy's surface fleet is relearning and applying ancient wisdom regarding nautical navigation, let us do the same by digging deeply into God's word.
I recall Heinlein's recounting of his memorization of logarithmic tables based on need to quickly shoot back & avoid death in WWII as gunnery officer.
