20 seconds ‘all it took’: Oregon man left partially blind by 1963 eclipse

A Portland man who watched a solar eclipse in 1963 says the experience left him partially blind in one eye, according to KPTV, and now he wants everyone to know the warnings about eye damage during the upcoming eclipse are no joke.

Back then, it was a total solar eclipse in Alaska and Canada, but the path of totality did not come through Oregon.

Still, Louis Tomososki remembers being 16 years old and watching it unfold from the baseball field at Marshall High School.

Nobody was talking about safety glasses back then, so he watched it with the naked eye, closing his left eye and leaving his right eye open. ...

I'm glad God gave us the privilege I've seen some of his handiwork in today's eclipse. I'm also very happy there wasn't they heavy overcast which would have prevented us from seeing it.

You can also look at the eclipse on light colored cardstock by using binoculars held with the eyepiece toward the cardstock, the objective lens end toward the sun. Or cardboard if there is nothing else. No need to look directly at it.

I happened to catch a few minutes after 13:00 on the TV network whose first 3 letters begin the alphabet, and they were proclaiming it, "A Day of Unity and Science"
I have not heard this version before. I think they are promoting their own values, and Christianity has nothing to do with it. No opinion from the Center for Creation Research saying, "Yes, this shows how finely tune our Creator has made the world, ...."
But I didn't waste more time on watching it, so maybe they did send a reporter to the churches that are having special events, but if they did, it would make the Christians look like some wild-eyed loonies!

At the local library they have in the meeting room live coverage of the solar eclipse shown on the wall. I will go into that room to view the solar eclipse.

Thanks Jim, those are some great alternatives. I prefer to look at it so will try the welder's goggles, but also the pinhole camera for curiosities sake.
I remember as a kid looking directly at the eclipse, turning away, looking again, turning away, looking again, etc. I guess I was fortunate not to have any damage.

This also reminds us the danger of looking at the wrong thing-
Mt6:22The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light. 23But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness!
Is 60:19
The sun shall be no more thy light by day; neither for brightness shall the moon give light unto thee: but the LORD shall be unto thee an everlasting light, and thy God thy glory.
Matt 4:16
The people which sat in darkness saw great light; and to them which sat in the region and shadow of death light is sprung up.
Jn 8:12
Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life
2Cor4:6"For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ."

Many welding masks are around- if curiosity pulls at you with the hype over this even- borrow a welding mask with a nice dark lens.
(Kevin Boling plan)
Lk11:35Take heed therefore that the light which is in thee be not darkness. "

Use wisdom along with curiosity.
