Fake eclipse glasses — here's how to tell if yours are safe

Amazon is pulling eclipse glasses listings and issuing refunds after sellers allegedly offered products that aren't safe.

As supplies of the glasses run short, some customers are turning to knockoffs that don't offer the protection from damage that the space event can cause. The real glasses have very dark lenses, designed for viewing the space event.

The knockoffs often don't meet industry standards, according to the American Astronomical Society (AAS) and NASA, which have put out a list of brands that are deemed safe. ...

Nothing wrong with science as long as we recognise its limitations. Science can't tell us the past. It can't predict the future. The results of scientific research are constrained by the knowledge, ability, and biases of the scientist. On the other hand, God knows all things. He knows the minute details of history. He controls the future. This is His creation. He created it for His purpose and for His glory. Would you rather take the word of One who knows all? Or would you rather take the word of His creatures?

Who hath directed the Spirit of the LORD, or being his counsellor hath taught him? With whom took he counsel, and who instructed him, and taught him in the path of judgment, and taught him knowledge, and shewed to him the way of understanding?
(Isaiah 40:13-14)

Because the pinhole technique makes for a small image. See http://tinyurl.com/y8a5n5ok (2D/3D Printable Pinhole Projectors) NASA provided some PDF files to help you out if you don't have a 3D printer.

John Y., you used a dirty word Science!!!! Remember for many here "Ignorance is bliss." (?)

No, I don't really care about global warming, since those who are worried are going to take action on how they perceive it will be contained. P.S., I'm not a big fan of wind power kills off too many migrating birds. I support nuclear energy as my favorite alternative.

CNN wrote:
If you've already purchased a pair of specs, AAS has a tip for testing them out.

When you put them on, "you shouldn't be able to see anything...except the sun itself," the organizations says.

"If you can see lights of more ordinary brightness through your eclipse glasses or handheld viewer, and you're not sure the product came from a reputable vendor, it's no good," AAS said in a statement.

The group recommends only using a welding mask if you're certain of its "shade number," an indication of how dark the mask's tint is. To view the eclipse, you'll need something at a 12, 13 or 14. A shade number of 13 is ideal, AAS says, but those are hard to come by.

Many public libraries are handing out free eclipse glasses.
