This will not be a long post. Because the issue doesn’t seem all that complicated.
I don’t understand Christians watching Game of Thrones.
Whenever there is a new episode, my Twitter feed overflows with people talking about Game of Thrones. First off, I’m always amazed that this many people have HBO. But second, and much more importantly, I’m always amazed that a number of people I respect--smart people, serious Christians, good conservative thinkers--are obviously watching (and loving) the series.
True, I haven’t seen it. Not an episode. Not a scene. I hardly know anything about the show. I know many people consider it absolutely riveting--full of compelling characters, an engrossing story, and excellent acting, writing, and aesthetics....
O' Lord place a hedge of protection over your sheep, that we would seek & yearn for holiness as, You are holy amen.
LK11:34-36 The lamp of the body is the eye. Therefore, when your eye is good, your whole body also is full of light. But when your eye is bad, your body also is full of darkness. Therefore take heed that the light which is in you is not darkness. If then your whole body is full of light, having no part dark, the whole body will be full of light, as when the bright shining of a lamp gives you light.”
I know a good number of folks who are self professing Christians who live this show. Almost the same type of mania that surrounds the NFL. If you have noticed most of the new shows on Netflix and Prime are rated MA also. It's simple , it plays to all the things the eye is weak to. It triggers the pleasure center in the brain, ithe same problems many have with porn.
1jn 3:"6 Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither known him. 7 Little children, let no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous. 8 He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil. 9 Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God. 10 In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother. 11 For this is the message that ye heard from the beginning, that we should love one another." -/ Love includes Boling type of exposition of this passage. His show on this subject worth your listening.
I do not have "freeview television", (which is not free, because in Britain we have to pay a compulsory licence fee or "tax" to the quasi public no adverts BBC, if you have any tv, or catch up iPlayer internet service), let alone pay cable or satellite tv.
I have not therefore seen any of the "Game of Thrones" series, nor would I even if I had tv.
Reading a short secular review of it in a newspaper was more than enough for me to convince me that it was not something that a Christian should be watching.
The craze over this reminds me greatly of the huge popularity of J K Rowling's "Harry Potter" series with its occult themes, particularly aimed at children.
As Christians, we are not to watch things that glorify evil, and should keep well away from it. The Gospel Coalition writer, Kevin DeYoung summarised this very well in his very good article.
We are to obey the command in Philippians to only think on the good and right things, and elsewhere in the NT to avoid all appearance of evil.
Those who are biblically saved will resist watching that which dishonors God.
It's only those with an unregenerate heart who gravitate toward this sort of sewer.
If we actually embraced the truth that Paul states that we are carrying around the body of our Lord in our arms daily, we would stay away from that which sent Him to the cross in the first place.
Meet believers that all say how much they love GoT. Never watched myself except for a review of an episode on You Tube which convinced me in just a few seconds that the show is evil and vile.
Never seen it- vaguely aware of violent porn storyline. Eph5:11 "and have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them. 12 For it is a shame even to speak of those things which are done of them in secret. 13 But all things that are reproved are made manifest by the light: for whatsoever doth make manifest is light. 14 Wherefore he saith, Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light. 15 See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, 16 Redeeming the time, because the days are evil. 17 Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is. "don’t expect those who are strangers to the light to be bothered by the darkness. But for conservative Christians who care about marriage and immorality and decency in so many other areas, it is baffling that Game of Thrones gets a free pass. " -.. some people will say it doesn’t bother their conscience or that it’s art or they can view sinful sex without participating in it themselves. But that doesn’t change what the Bible says about the importance of purity and the power of the eye. The fact is our consciences should be smitten; steamy sex scenes are not the kind of art for which we can give thanks" Rather- reprove them!
