Megachurch pastors Joel and Victoria Osteen criticized for throwing ‘Hook ‘Em' hand sign

Thousands of students graduated this past weekend from the University of Texas at Austin, flooding social media with photos of proud new alumni and their families.

Joel Osteen and his wife, Victoria, draw thousands every week to their massive Lakewood Church in Houston, and millions tune in from across the globe to watch. The pair also head a massive multi-million dollar empire stemming from book deals and tours. Their son, Jonathan, recently graduated from UT, and he posed with each of his parents for a pretty common photo taken during commencement weekend: the graduate and his mom and dad both making the “Hook ’em Horns” hand sign. ...

Weak theology far more damaging than a silly hand sign, IMHO.

Dan5:
"3 Then they brought the golden vessels that were taken out of the temple of the house of God which was at Jerusalem; and the king, and his princes, his wives, and his concubines, drank in them.
4 They drank wine, and praised the gods of gold, and of silver, of brass, of iron, of wood, and of stone.
5 In the same hour came forth
fingers of a man's hand,
and wrote over against the candlestick
upon the plaister of the wall of the king's palace:
and the king saw the part of the hand that wrote.

6 Then the king's countenance was changed, and his thoughts troubled him, so that the joints of his loins were loosed, and his knees smote one against another"

Some hand signs upset pagans.

But there the similarities end. Graham’s persona was warm and inclusive, but theologically he preached a stark, stripped-down gospel — a series of altar calls, with eternity hanging in the balance and Christianity distilled to a yes or no for Christ. Osteen’s message is considerably more upbeat. His God gives without demanding, forgives without threatening to judge, and hands out His rewards in this life rather than in the next. Where Graham was inclined to comments like “we’re all on death row . . . the only way out of death row is Jesus,” Osteen prefers cheerier formulations. “Too many times we get stuck in a rut, thinking we’ve reached our limits,” he writes in Your Best Life Now. “But God wants us to constantly be increasing, to be rising to new heights. He wants to increase you in his wisdom and help you make better decisions. God wants to increase you financially, by giving you promotions, fresh ideas, and creativity.”

... in twenty-first-century America, the gospel of wealth has come of age. By linking the spread of the gospel to the habits and mores of entrepreneurial capitalism, and by explicitly baptizing the pursuit of worldly gain, prosperity theology has helped millions of believers reconcile their religious faith with their nation’s seemingly unbiblical wealth and un-Christian consumer culture.

This hand sign is interesting and I have never even pondered why it is used. After a little research, I have decided that it can evil or simply a gesture.

Anyway, Joel Osteen serves satan in his ministry, so I could care less what he meant by the hand sign.

Many things in our culture can have different meanings to different folks. Another good example is saying "God bless you" to someone who sneezes. Look up the origin of that and you will see that its origin is evil.

I don't know about now, but in his early days he confessed he really didn't know Scripture well when he gave that advice. But you would think now that he has made a living at it, he would have taken the time to become more sound in doctrine. Or maybe he realized if he became more sound, he wouldn't have as many followers?

I guess the signal surfers use is a bit different, and with the thumb.

The hook actually has several different meanings to many different people and cultures.
Here, the sign of the Texas Longhorns, Satanists use it, surfers use it to say, "hang loose", and many other interpretations, here and abroad. Fact of the matter though is that most use it for no particular reason.

Personally, I wouldn't use it, but now the conspiracy theorists are claiming the Olsteens are closet Satanists, and high Masons, etc. Doubt that, though the husband and wife are certainly in his service, having been duped by mammon as they serve man.

As to the hand gesture the Osteens and their son used at the graduation, while it is true that the university students at Austin UT use it for their football team, it is also a well known Satanic symbol used by pop concert attenders, and particularly by many directly Satanic performers of heavy metal groups, but also by lighter and more popular singers and groups.

At best this was culpable ignorance, at worst, cynical and totally careless.

That is why these kind of teachers need to get back to the Bible, repent, and either renounce their previous teachings, or completely close down and leave the ministry altogether.

Tragically, this pastor and his wife, are leading thousands and thousands of self professed Christians into a cult of self worship.

"Live Your Best Life Now" will tragically seem very false and untrue, when these poor deceived folks are facing the Last Judgment.

Though I have no problem for a father or mother celebrating their son's graduation, they need to be preparing their son for eternity, not just for mere human rewards.

Interestingly, this pastor and his wife of this huge mega church in Lakewood, Houston, were deafeningly silent when the lesbian Mayor of the city was passing transgender bathroom ordinances, and subpoenaing the sermons of other pastors in the city!!

Youths of Asia so very correct. John MacArthur points out Joel Osteen gets his far away from the Bible as he can get. this is an excellent six minute YouTube video, that very few people should have trouble viewing. It worked fine on my tablet. ]] https://youtu.be/G05BPQJkBfA ( "John MacArthur Calls Out Joel Osteen as a False Prophet" ). John points out a few other things as well.
