Briarwood Presbyterian Church seeks lawmakers’ approval to establish police force
Briarwood Presbyterian Church in Vestavia Hills is trying to establish its own police force.

The move requires approval from state lawmakers. The bill, sponsored by Rep. Arnold Mooney (R-Shelby County) cleared its first major hurdle Wednesday. The House Public Safety Committee gave its OK.

Briarwood Presbyterian Church calls this a way to create a safer campus in a fallen world.

Some lawmakers argue allowing a private church to have its own police force could begin a slippery slope.

Briarwood is a very large church with a very large number of people coming and going at any given time. I worshipped threre once maybe ten years ago. My family and I currently worship with another large church but this one in the middle of a very large, metropolian city. Judging from the occassional Deacon who walks past with an earphone, this church has chosen to use an internal effort to provide security, necessary due to the large homeless population and outreach to the homeless community each week, including Sunday. But I have often wondered what force would stop a determined attacker, other than being dogpiled by the Deacons and several of us men, who was bent on either disrupting the service or killing worshippers. The church we attend takes a fairly hard stance against the sexual revolution and has a solid outreach and effort toward those trapped in Islam. We know a family who had been at the church in San Francisco that was attacked years ago by angry zealots of the sexual revolution, demanding their autonomy from God by attacking those who proclaimed and upheld His word. An Islamic terrorist attack on a major church in the US is likely to happen at some point. The threats are real. So is the Lord God Almighty. Can He protect and save? Absolutely. Does He do that

For a couple of years or so, about 20 years ago, I was the chief Steward or Usher of a large inner city Pentecostal Church.

We just prayerfully used our ears and eyes, and did have to remove one or two disruptive characters, usually to the foyer or outer hall, usually plying them with coffee. We did have a policeman in our church, who we could liaise with, if necessary from the local police force, who was one of our members.

In Britain, private police are not an option, and the US set up of carrying weapons is not permitted at all in our law.

I must say that though there were one or two slightly difficult situations, we never had any fear, and trusted in the Lord.

All this Presbyterian Church needs, is to have good well trained Stewards or Ushers, backed up prayerfully, and to use military and police members of the church for practical advice and maybe training, and to find ways of one to one witness and its practical help for individuals that might cause a problem otherwise.

This should be interesting when the Mormons and the Roman Catholic Church ask to have their own police forces. The Moonies may think it's a good idea too?

It seems like they could have security guards without having them have the power of being police!
