U.S. Panel Endorses Designer Babies to Avoid Serious Disease

Since its invention four years ago, a powerful and precise technology for editing DNA called CRISPR has transformed science because of how it makes altering the genetic makeup of plants and animals easier than ever before.

But no possibility opened by gene-editing technology has been so exciting, frightening, or as hotly contested as its capacity to allow humanity, for the first time, to control the genetic constitution of children by applying CRISPR to human embryos, sperm, or eggs—cells which together make up the “germ line.”

On Tuesday, in a striking acknowledgement that humanity is on the cusp of genetically modified children, a panel of the National Academy of Sciences, the nation’s source of blue-ribbon advice on science policy, recommended that germ-line modification of human beings be permitted in the future in certain narrow circumstances to prevent the birth of children with serious ...

Mike, great point that I wish/hope would be heeded. Years ago a group of engineers modified a wheat plant with fish scales to stop a certain strain of rust that was devastating African wheat fields. Suddenly people who had no family history of wheat allergies couldn't eat the wheat. Then a pattern of fish/shell fish allergies in these people began to emerge. Wasn't the corn, exactly. And Chris rightly pointed to Dolly. Love your last sentence.

Thanks Pilgrim, but the best comments were the scriptures that Frank posted. We're expecting baby 7 in late summer and it's something to be a part of this "mystery"!

Good point, Mike. Messing with God's order, and the perfection of the natural order by man can only bring unforeseen problems, or a whole new strain of diseases, etc, as you said. Look at how cloning worked out for Dolly, and who knows what kinds of mad science and human experimentation has been going on for who knows how long in clandestine labs around the world. I often wonder what kinds of monsters have been created and the horrors of human experimentation gone very wrong.

"Designer" babies to avoid serious disease would, if it came about, end up with a new set of diseases. Original design is the only right way.

Beautiful passages that should humble us before a God who rightly claims control and creatorship over all things. What craziness in this world when the pot supposes it can one-up The Potter. I echo your sentiment: Oh come quickly Lord Jesus, come quickly!

Sister Anne,

Amen sister and once again you are right on and your comment blessed me! Reminds me a little of the Tower of Babel; mankind wanting to play God. Some below thoughts on life in the womb.

[24] Thus saith the LORD, thy redeemer, and he that formed thee from the womb, I [am] the LORD that maketh all [things]; that stretcheth forth the heavens alone; that spreadeth abroad the earth by myself; (Isa 44:24 KJV)

[5] And now, saith the LORD that formed me from the womb [to be] his servant, to bring Jacob again to him, Though Israel be not gathered, yet shall I be glorious in the eyes of the LORD, and my God shall be my strength. (Isa 49:5 KJV)

[13] For thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast covered me in my mother's womb.

[14] I will praise thee; for I am fearfully [and] wonderfully made: marvellous [are] thy works; and [that] my soul knoweth right well. [15] My substance was not hid from thee, when I was made in secret, [and] curiously wrought in the lowest parts of the earth. (Psa 139:13-15 KJV)

[13] Thou shalt not kill. (Exo 20:13 KJV)

Come quickly Lord Jesus, come quickly.

And what an insult to the babies God made that are not "perfect" in their eyes! There is a way that seems right to a man, but in the end it leads to death. (Prov 14:12; 16:25) There can be no good fruit from man intervening in this process. Let God do the knitting.

I didn't read the article.

It sounds like the Nazi's attempt at creating a master race. Same concept, different techniques.
