Southern Baptists express worry about the influence of Calvinism

Calvinists and traditionalists in the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) agree on almost everything, except for the nature of election, the extent of the atonement, how people become Christians, and the meaning of original sin. Don’t take my word for it: “Truth, Trust, and Testimony in a Time of Tension,” a 2013 statement from the SBC’s Calvinism Advisory Committee, calls for unity in the face of “significant theological disagreement.”

That report came a year after more than 60 percent of SBC senior pastors in a 2012 LifeWay Research survey said they were concerned about the impact of Calvinism on their denomination. Baptist News Global recently quoted Paige Patterson, president of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, saying to denomination members: “I know there are a fair number of you who think you are a Calvinist, but understand there is a denomination which represents that view. It’s ...

Mike – NY . . re: your response to John Yurich . .

Don't you know this newfound tolerance . . liberality toward those whom papal Rome formerly regarded as heretics under the Vatican 1 “church” . . namely those not in the Catholic fold . .
now under Vatican II they embrace and regard as “separated brethren”.
Some in the Vatican II camp even go so far as to call us brothers. Nothing could be further from the truth.

This is the baleful consequence of dialogue with Rome.
Those who have joined themselves to papal Rome in the spirit of false ecumenism have effectively joined themselves to the Harlot. (Rev. 17) They are of a worldly spirit. They have no love for Christ and his truth. They have embraced a lie. They are the enemies of the gospel.

Better to go outside the camp with Christ and bear his reproach,
with a few of "like precious faith"
(II Peter 1:1)
than be in the company of those
who have forged an ungodly alliance with papal Rome under the guise of unity.

“Can two walk together except they be agreed?”
- Amos 3:3

NO

Hebrews 13:13
Let us go forth therefore unto him without the camp, bearing his reproach

I stopped using envelopes because of disagreement over use of the booklet which came out at the end of the year listing who gave, and how much. Never did use the envelopes after that. Even in my closed minded Synod, one could hold a personal view not compatible with Church doctrine, the Pastor can know, and not be excommunicated. But you cant promote the idea among the congregation, and obviously not be a member of another congregation

"I will only be Catholic since I will remain on the membership roll of a Catholic Church. In fact I will only attend an Evangelical Protestant Church as long as I am residing in my current town. But when I move to Eastern Colorado and get a farm and find a Catholic woman to marry I will cease attending an Evangelical Protestant Church and just attend the Catholic Church and raise the children Catholic."

Agree, Lurker. John Y has never been a troll. People confuse the fact that he doesn't change his mind about anything with being a plant for the RCC. He's somehow found an internal "safe" place for what he believes, but I think it must be a lonely place.

In addition to attending the local Catholic parish on late Saturday afternoons I also attend the local Baptist Church on Sunday mornings. I go to the Adult Sunday School before services at that Baptist Church.

Thanks John,

Let's not fail to mention Chris, Kev and many others over the years who have patiently tried to reason with JY from scripture for his good.

One notable point to consider is intent. Our current resident troll SteveR clearly has an offensive, vindictive spirit and delights in pushing the buttons of whoever he can bait for the purpose of amusement. He has never set forth a biblical argument for why he believes there are millions of born again believers in good standing with God within the RCC machine. Never. John Y., on the other hand, rarely if ever engages in such mean spirited behavior. John's intent has always been defensive seeking acceptance.

Anyway, its clear to me that both have closed minds and only God can do something about that and I pray and trust He will in His time.

Blessings to you in your service to Christ Jesus.

Amen sister.
In our unregenerate state, we are all of an unsound mind, so graphically depicted in the account we are given in Luke 8:27-34

And in verse 35 we see the transformation Christ wrought upon this poor stricken soul, for his word comes with power.

Luke 8:35
"Then they went out to see what was done; and came to Jesus, and found the man, out of whom the devils were departed, sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed, and in his right mind: and they were afraid."

How good it is to be taught of God . .
taught of the Spirit and thus of a sound mind!

As Christ said: ”And they shall all be taught of God.” (John 6:45)

1 Corinthians 2:12-13
"Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God.
Which things also we speak, not in the words which man's wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual."

Thanks be to God for opening my eyes to his glorious truth. Luke 24:45:
"Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures."

Sister MS,

Well stated. We see repeatedly in scripture the state of the unregenerate 'heart' - Jeremiah 17:9, Matthew 15:19,20, Genesis 6:5 to mention a few. The mind is never 'right' until God does a supernatural work. Romans 12:2 tells us this, ' And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.' A continual feeding upon His word is what 'renews' the thinking as God gives us understanding, 'ears to hear' and 'eyes to see'.

Is it any wonder our Lord told Nicodemus, 'you must be born again'

I do agree with not feeding the trolls, both JY and SR delight in coming here to be fed. Again, I go back to some sort of mental disturbance in both of them as a possible reason for delighting in such childish antics.
I agree with you sister.
Knowing many who are RC, and also those that are unregenerated a common trait held by all is an unsound mind.
In the RC cult they are subjected to satanic superstition, practices, and many other unclean ways so it is evident in how they speak and relate to others.
An old Latin term best describes what is displayed by some on this site. Non compos mentis.

Praise God that His elect have been graciously given not the spirit of fear, but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind. 2Tim.1:7.

I can say with reasonable confidence that I have never intentionally spoken harshly to John Y. nor have I ever called him a troll, unregenerate or any other derogatory term. I don't think of John Y. as a troll because I believe he honestly believes what he states. Not the definition of a troll whose sole purpose is being entertained at the expense of others.

SteveR . . you're wasting valuable time . . where is that proof you said you were working on? The fact is you got NOTHIN'!

Quit playing switch and bait.

Your repeated and desperate attempts at deflection are truly pathetic and your attempts at levity are a huge fail. This is no laughing matter.

Again I hate to repeat myself, but in your case, I will make an exception . .

I thought so . . NO PROOF or substance to the charges you have brought. You failed to make your case, so you must pay the damages . . you must make restitution.

SteveR has provided absolutely no proof for the serious
allegations he made against other posters here whom he has accused

of referring to John Yurich as an "ignorant autistic person".

Once again SteveR . .
In the absence of verifiable proof, you need to submit a public apology to these folks for your false allegation
against them.

And since Philadelphia totally

dismantled your charge against Lurker in

this regard,

you owe him an apology as well.

SteveR . .
Time to man up and do the right thing!

Then you need to tend to the home and your husband, not spend your attention on me. This is valuable time you need to spend for him and your family. Even arguing with some man on the internet can lead a husband to have thoughts you have a desire of infidelity.
