Pulpit Freedom Sunday: Pastors to Protest IRS Restrictions on Speaking About Politics

Pastors across the country will protest Internal Revenue Service restrictions on them not to talk politics in the church as they observe the annual Pulpit Freedom Sunday, days after the introduction of the Free Speech Fairness Act in the U.S. House to reinstate pastors' and churches' rights to speak freely.

"The IRS has no business acting as the speech police of any non-profit organization, as its many scandals over recent years have made clear," said Erik Stanley, senior counsel of the Arizona-based Alliance Defending Freedom, which started Pulpit Freedom Sunday in 2008.

The Johnson Amendment, which Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has vowed to repeal, says non-profits, including churches, cannot speak in favor of political candidates, and the Free Speech Fairness Act, a bill that Rep. Steve Scalise and Rep. Jody Hice, both Republican, introduced in the House Wednesday, would ...

I agree also, pennned. William S is so right. In my Sunday school we have been talking about who to vote for(one refuses to vote) and the teacher brings it up our lesson. Guess what, a few didn't want to mention politics anymore. Just teach the lesson and that advice was ignored..get another teacher because I teach what God leads me to teach, if you are unhappy with my teaching so be it.

Since God's Word and Kingdom concern every area of life, there is no subject that is off limits. It is the duty of the man of God to address every human activity with the truth of God. The idea that politics is off limits is a liberal idea and because so many believers have accepted this lie we find ourselves overrun with godless politicians who follow their reprobate hearts rather than God's Word. Romans 13 declares that civil government is instituted by God for the protection of the righteous and the punishment of evil doers. The civil magistrate is referred to as a minister of God, so this myth that politics is somehow taboo and to be avoided in the pulpit is simply the ploy of Satan to silence the church. Wake up people and let your voices be heard! Don't let the enemies of God intimidate you!! Soli Deo Gloria!!!

Really! Some you "pastors" are a joke. I don't ask or need their permission. I also tell who should be voted for.

the whole system is humanistic statist, eugenic, baby killing, war mongering rejection of the Living God. To which part to we give credence to "keep politics out"? its not that it doesn't sound good on paper, or on screen, just wondering how this plays out in real life, pretty much every issue I see has a right and a wrong. there's the side using and stealing, and then there's the side using and stealing, or sometimes defending life. I've come to the point that any good sound biblical doctrine applied to real life is PC, and PC is the political parameters of the day.

Speaking from a British perspective, churches should generally keep to preaching the Gospel and teach consecutive, expository sermons from the Bible and disciple their church members with sound doctrine.

They should generally avoid politics, except that portion of it that commands churches and individual Christians to defy the law of God, to oppose it and defend Biblical principles and doctrines.

However, it always rather puzzles me that state, and in the case of the US and some other countries, federal authorities do absolutely nothing about or to liberal and left wing churches that preach virtually nothing but Marxist and Socialist politics from the pulpit, and they are never rebuked by the authorities, persecuted by the tax authorities and charity regulators, and are indeed lauded and praised by the government!!!

If you don’t mind, how do you define the Gospel? As the entirety of God’s Word? Or as the “123, Pray with me” presentation? Also, if God has told us about something in His Word, (for instance, blasphemy and honor to parents) should or should not a pastor preach on that topic?

Only someone who is totally off of their rocker believes that churches should not be concerned about who should be elected president of the United States.

A. In the Great Commision, Jesus told us to teach the nations everything He has commanded. Following His commands affects ALL of a person’s life- even their politics- with such commands as “Thou Shalt not Kill”. The Church must preach all of God’s Word.
B. Where exactly does the First Amendment require paying taxes before exercizing the rights it ennumerates? Kind of the whole idea of a “right” is that it’s your’s as an image-bearer of God, no strings attachted. Are the Churches in China “sorry excuses” for not registering? Or is Christ’s Church under His rule alone?
C. It’s a good thing for us that the Churches during the Founding spoke to all of life. I own “Political Sermons of the Founding Era”, a set of 2 large volumes with the texts of dozens of sermons and I’ve heard of other similar sets. King George called the Revolution a “Presbytarian Parson’s Rebellion”. If the Church back then had neglected their duty, we would not have the liberties we enjoy today. If the Church neglects the same duty today, what will future generations be forced to endure?

A sad excuse for Christian churches, when their whole time and then some should be devoted to the Gospel. Pay taxes and they can say whatever they want. They can officially be conservative Unitarians.
Dr. Rugh wrote:
As believers committed to Jesus Christ, our involvement in social or cultural issues is sometimes misunderstood. The desire to concentrate on what God has called the church to do - teach the word - requires us to be selective in how we spend our time. The choice to limit our involvement comes from the desire to be obedient to God.

Scripture tells us that the Holy Spirit uses the word of God to change lives. When the word of God is taught and assimilated into a life, two things happen: salvation and spiritual growth.
