Calvinism Not to Blame for Southern Baptist Decline, JD Greear Says

J.D. Greear, who was a strong contender for president at the recent Southern Baptist Convention Annual Meeting, says it's unfair to blame declining baptism numbers in the SBC on a resurgence of 5-point Calvinism in Southern Baptist life. Greear graciously stepped aside in a razor close race with Steve Gaines, pastor of Bellevue Baptist Church in Memphis and a more moderate Calvinist ‚ÄĒ a contest that many say rested on how 5-point Calvinism affects church growth.

Yes I need a lot of work at public speaking as well. But my desire is there and even if I go to seminary school and don't become a pastor still time well spent. I'm a veteran (so I get free tuition)and my wife has a good career so this is a blessing towards my goal. Taking classes now towards my goal. Thanks for the support Christopher.

If it's your calling, then good for you, Kev. I had wanted to do street preaching, but I'm much better putting my thoughts on paper as opposed to thinking and speaking on the fly.

Yes I do want to if the Lord is willing. I have a lot of work ahead of me and lots to learn though. But I do feel I have a good foundation.

Hi Kev, was just finishing a story. Are you wanting to be a teaching elder/pastor? If you would like to answer this, was wanting to know....

Penelope didn't know quite what that meant but may the Lord bless you as well and I do like reading your comments and your opposition to the NWO. I use to study things about secret societies and the such long ago. There is a spiritual battle going on out there and I'm glad we have sisters like you out there in the fight.

Thanks John UK yeah I stick to the bible if it's there then that's how it is. Yeah that's why I put it in quotes more for the effect of not taking credit for what the spirit leads you to do than the term "making" would literally imply. Making sure I'm on the right track thanks.

So John UK, do you see anything that I have mentioned that would be wrong. I know if you say something even like I have said can lead to some chastising you for this or that, but I ask to see if I am in error. If anyone else has an opinion appreciate it as well.
Hi Kev, Lord bless.

Chastisement for holding a biblical position is quite common, and I am quite used to it. You'll also get used to it. So please feel free to speak up and not allow the naysayers to silence your voice.

No, I see nothing wrong with what you've said thus far. Indeed, I am most impressed that you have dared to mention that unmentionable "walking in the Spirit" and being "led by the Spirit". If by "Spirit" you mean the direct influence of the Spirit of God, with impressions upon the mind which affect the will, namely, God speaking to you and telling you what to do, or what to say, at any given moment; not so much "making" you do anything, but leading and guiding you to accomplish his will, then yes, I believe that to be entirely biblical and correct, this being the end result of being "reconciled to God", whereby we know him and have communion with him. Which thing is most wonderful, most wonderful.

Ironically the decision of Boyce to allow Dwight Moody grounds for his so-called evangelism was very permissive of the inroads of PC Arminianism and of a man who relied on emotionalism and Sankey's organ music to get decisions. Moody was the Forerunner of Modern evangelism and not even a Baptist. That was a very bad decision and the beginning of a downgrade And theologically weak Christianity in practice. He succumbed to the fear of men which is a snare of being called a hyper calvinist so he tolerated Moody's tare-planting evangelism even though he disagreed with Moody's theology and paedobaptism.

First Baptist Church of Woodstock isn't perfect, but look at all of the Presbyterian and Luthern churches which have become so liberal. Nobody's organized church is perfect because people aren't perfect!

"While the Southern Baptist Convention was born in 1845 it was grounded in the mind and heart of James Petigru Boyce."

"Like Spurgeon, Boyce often lamented the inroads that Arminianism was making on Baptist life. He saw the fate that awaits the Church when it trades the sovereignty of God for the sovereignty of man. Boyce also warned against the dangers of hyper-Calvinism that had taken root among Baptist in the south in the form of Primitive and Hard-Shell Baptists. He was a Calvinist who was so committed to evangelism that he offered the Seminary grounds to D.L. Moody when he brought his tent to Louisville."

The Southern Baptist Association has become liberal and politically correct and tries to shame it's historic founders as if they are more holy than them which is ridiculous because they are far from it. Their hypocrisy stinks and yes all this under Al Mohler. their Calvinistic theology is inferior to that of their founders and the practices of the churches are grossly irreverent And unscriptural. Their empire is crumbling as they try to dictate PC policy to member churches like a Protestant Vatican. Their Founders would be ashamed.

Thanks John UK, I do believe it can be done but one would have to, one have fully mentored the person so they know the Gospel and two have an overwhelming experience where you are led to walk in the Spirit to do so( pretty much the Spirit will do it). Guess it's one of those things one will stay away from until the Holy Spirit just "makes" you do it in s since. Yeah I agree the people you named makes one really avoid this. I think if I had not seen them do this and seen someone I know who is lead by the Spirit do it, I would view this much differently. I see what some people meant when they said that you will start to see how some people are on here by their posts. I seen from another post newer than this one what they meant. I will try not to respond to the people I see like that other than to set them straight if they speak badly of someone or teach false doctrine, always good to mark them out. You have a blessed day as well John UK. Thanks for all the input.
You're welcome Kev. I find that discussion often can lead to coming to one's own conclusions about things. We got the Bible and God's Spirit to help us understand. Lord bless.

Kev...
Getting ready to go to my SBC this morning, but wanted to let you know it is not my intention to misrepresent what you wrote. Two things. One, I may misunderstand what the other person has said. Two, I try to keep as much as is possible in the current post from the previous one. However, sometimes the previous one is just to long and I have to edit some of the content in order to respond.

Thanks Kev, Lord bless you too.

Yes I see now why the query. First the Anglican church, and now more recently the charismatic churches, and even more recently the Benny Hinn/Rodney Howard Brown style imparting of blessings just by "blowing" on the congregation. Which things I regard as dangerous.

We are told in Ephesians 1 that in Christ we have every spiritual blessing. Thusly, at conversion we have the whole package of blessings from God. Sure we can lose them for a while, or at least quench the fire and grieve the Spirit, but when ordinary men like ourselves say that they have power and the authority of God to transfer the Holy Spirit or his gifts to us by laying on of hands, well, I just don't buy it. Keep studying bro.

Thank you John UK for all the help yeah for praying over believers for healing both spiritual and physical I see nothing wrong with that that's for sure. This is the part I needed some help with which you answered this:

The Anglican church has always had bishops who lay hands on new communicants for them to receive the gifts of the Spirit at confirmation, but I'm not at all sure about that.
I feel the same way and will avoid the laying on of hands to receive the Holy Spirit because of this verse I see a danger in it.
1 Tim 5:22
But I may be wrong further study I will do. Thanks for the help hope you have a great day.

John UK yes I made that question very unclear. What is your opinion of the importance of modern day laying on of hands and do you agree with the things I wrote about below? My question stems not from any one scripture but from talking with John 4 J.
Kev, the laying on of hands today, it seems to me, are twofold:
1. For separation of a brother unto the ministry of the word by other elders.
2. For anointing with oil by elders of the church in the healing ministry towards the sick.

I also see no problem with ordinary Christians touching other people on the shoulder or head when they are praying for them for whatever reason.

The Anglican church has always had bishops who lay hands on new communicants for them to receive the gifts of the Spirit at confirmation, but I'm not at all sure about that.

Is that what you meant? If not, sorry again. It is easier if you have a scripture in mind.
