Sultan Bans Christmas
The sultan of Brunei, whose government is a Clinton Foundation donor, has forbidden his citizens from openly celebrating Christmas, the Telegraph reports.

The small Asian nation’s government warned that honoring the Christian holiday would “damage the beliefs” of the country’s Muslim majority:

The conservative Muslim country on the island of Borneo stated the punishment would apply to anyone found sending festive greetings – or wearing Santa hats.

Non-Muslims are allowed to celebrate Christmas – but they must do so only within their communities and first alert authorities. ...

I'm wondering if many who like to hear God's word rightly divided could handle Ovadal's correct division of it in regards to the subject at hand.
Warning: Hearing the truth makes one accountable to it.
Those who take comfort in their ignorance/naivete probably shouldn't listen. Of course,I guess that doesn't matter now when one has been forewarned.
Willfully avoiding the truth is a sin too.

It might just sound like Handel's Messiah.

No, you aren't and its a valid question which can't be answered truthfully. My point was I don't see any recognition or mention of what God has been doing "without" the churches. And since the people who name the name of Christ seem to be unwilling to do anything about it "within" the churches...... should we not assume God will have to deal with that as well...... judgment day? That is the historical biblical pattern....... falling away must and will come first. This sad state within and without is far from limited to the celebration of Christmas as you well know. Christmas is like the dead canary in the coal mine....... a tip off of much greater, dreadful things to come but few are fleeing the mine. And even the one righteous church of the seven was not found without fault.

Lurker,
I don't believe I am fighting against my Lord by asking for scriptural support for those who insist on celebrating the birth of Christ on a specific day. I do agree with you, yes, God is turning this nation over to what it loves - sin by allowing this festive time of year to be saturated with materialism. The retailers love this time of year don't they? People start fighting for the lusts of the flesh around thanksgiving, trampling over others to get that certain item. That pretty much tells us what the world thinks Christmas is all about. I have no problem with the world desiring to remove manger scenes and preferring 'happy holidays' to 'merry christmas'. Good! Let us not attempt to join a thrice-holy God with such greed, selfishness and idolatry. We shower sinful beings with gifts, as though any of us are worthy of such.

Let us praise our magnificent Savior for lowering Himself and coming here to do the will of the Father, to rescue His people from sin. I am looking ahead to His second coming! Even so, come Lord Jesus!!!!
I highly recommend this from Ralph Erskine -http://www.pbministries.org/Theology/R%20Erskine/Sermons/sermon_7.htm. I shared it with brother Frank and he was convicted and truly blessed, as was I when I read it.

Amen MS!

Ladybug,
I share your sentiment..I could care less what people do around this time of the year..
My gripe is with the church joining my Lord and Saviours precious Name to an abominable pagan mass.
Shameful!
"As for you, O house of Israel, thus saith the LORD GOD; Go ye, serve ye everyone his idols, and hereafter also, if ye will not hearken unto me: but pollute ye my holy name no more with your gifts, and with your idols". Ezekiel 20:39.

If you think about it, God in His infinite wisdom, has allowed Christmas to slowly die the death of secularism. In a few more years there'll be no more connection of the birth of Jesus to the holiday in the public square.

But it seems every year there are those who don't want to see it die so they can keep on beating the terminally ill horse. Be careful lest you find yourself fighting against God.

MS, amen sister. The rituals and traditions of men still have a stronghold on many who name the name of Christ. Yes, apostasy is increasing at an alarming rate everywhere. That certainly is no surprise.

Liturgical calendars....ah yes, still many are clinging to the rags of Rome.
Well the next " big one" on your liturgical calendar will be lent....

use another date if you want.

excellent thoughts sc; folks here keep arguing for Christmas celebrations, liturgical calendars, etc. However, I am still waiting for someone, anyone to prove, from Scripture, where we are mandated to partake in the celebrating of the birth of Christ on December 25th. Yes, we praise God for His coming to this lowly world to save His people, but we are not mandated to do this once a year on December 25th. The cry of the Reformation was Sola Scriptura, are we now to toss that cry to the wind in favor of opinionated views and pagan rituals?

Pen,I think that the true believers that went before us would rather that we stay connected through Christ through his word and Spirit.
God's word will not perish. We are rooted in Him. We can live without the liturgical calendar.
And,I have yet to see where anyone is devouring another by standing against man-made traditions.
Truth is not rightly served with lies on the side.
Many unbelievers know this and see the inconsistency between Christians who insist Jesus is the way, truth and the life yet compromise truth by holding tight to RC elements/"holy days".
Liturgical calendars may make for ease in topic selection for sermons but they are inaccurate and,of course, the early church never used them.
As ladybug asks...where is this in the bible?
We don't need the bible PLUS anything.

Celebrating Christ's birth and incarnation is a sensible Christian idea and has been for thousands of years in the church. The Christian does not have to be 'pagan' to celebrate the birth of our Lord.
when many come to Christ it influences the calendar, we are seeing a reversal of this. nativities being taken down for menorahs, Christian celebrations taken down for UN/commnst celebrations. we also have among us those who think they know but do not know Christian history that will plague the brethren with accusations. I call it the "devouring of one another". There is no sin in a liturgical calendar, in fact, if it keeps the next generation more connected to our history as believers its a good thing. modernism tends to erase history, erase our roots and culture. Christ is King and all in all. Curious if you knew that "Son of God" was a term meant for Caesar, he was "god on earth" -- it was quite a political statement Christ was making being called the "Son of God" -- He deserves all the glory. It is by His hands this world even exists.

Very interesting sister dorcas; no one is to blame. Exposing ecumenical ties should always be done. If comments are scrubbed, so be it.

Maybe it is my fault as I suggested contacting SA or JB directly without (or before)stating the post below. I suspect neither Dr Beeke or SermonAudio want to spend time dealing with comments or passing them on directly. So I apologise to the Moderator for that suggestion, but just trying to make a valid point that it is best to get all the facts and motives before withdrawing or suggesting that we withdraw fellowship with any saint. In other words prove all things from that speaker's writings or sermons-should be simple.

Ladybug: This sermon by Ovadal may be of interest - http://www.sermonaudio.com/sermoninfo.asp?SID=523132214375

Yes I heard such at the time and sermons dealing with the Reformation Heritage KJV and also some articles by Ivan Foster going back to 2013.

Some Pastors asked Joel Beeke personally about all the criticism and were satisfied with his answers, some involved with the translation also.

We might as well say that SermonAudio is now compromised as it supports Dr Beeke as a friend. I am presently listening to Rev John Wagner one of the best and most able Free Presbyterian Ministers, so do you say he is compromised for being party to the conference as also a friend of Dr Beeke. How can he and those involved with SermonAudio not discern Dr Beeke IF he is so compromised and evidencing any popish beliefs?

Both preach to whole counsel of God and the gospel of grace; uphold the received text and identify the Popish antichrist. What evidence is there that Dr Beeke preaches another gospel or is party to the antichrist-if you can direct to one of his sermons or any of his writings, it would be helpful?

That is the challenge.

Xmas cheer,

You provide no source to back your statement, I encourage you to read this link - http://www.swrb.com/newslett/actualNLs/christmas.htm
It will discredit all you've stated.

I am still waiting for your biblical proof that December 25 is the birth of Christ and that we must celebrate His birth on this day. No one here is saying we shouldn't be grateful for Christ's first coming, so that angle is irrelevant.
