Pope claims Christmas is a 'charade'

Christmas festivities will seem empty in a world which has chosen "war and hate", Pope Francis said Thursday.

"Christmas is approaching: there will be lights, parties, Christmas trees and nativity scenes ... it's all a charade. The world continues to go to war. The world has not chosen a peaceful path," he said in a sermon.

"There are wars today everywhere, and hate," he said after the worst terror attack in French history, the bombing of a Russian airliner, a double suicide bombing in Lebanon, and a series of other deadly strikes.

"We should ask for the grace to weep for this world, which does not recognise the path to peace. To weep for those who live for war and have the cynicism to deny it," the Argentine pontiff said, adding: "God weeps, Jesus weeps". ...

Thanks to all who found it in their hearts to pray for my daughter. While she is still recovering, this experience has brought her closer to God. Instead of getting angry with God and asking why does He allow things like this to happen, she is trusting that God knows best and is leaving it to Him (Romans 8:28). Answered prayers. Thanks again.

Quite so, SC.

1 John 5:12 KJV
(12) He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.

That's what it's all about.

Thanks Pilgrim! I understood the link to be Banner of Truth and that is what I was referring to. I pulled up the below Alpha Course by Chris Hand and it was good but probably a little lacking since it was so short. I couldn't get the article by Banner of Truth. It gave me a message that the link was no longer available.
The Banner of Truth is the site I used to read quite a lot, but for whatever reason haven't read it in years. I remember disagreeing with some of the authors, but some were very good.
Thanks! I agree the alpha course should be rejected.
Amen indeed, fellow pilgrim. Yes I think the Chris Hand article was cut, but the link from banner of truth works fine for me, and is an excellent article.

In the UK it is always the ecumenical churches who put on the Alpha Course, and of course it just increases the number of tares in their churches, especially those who base their whole lives on experiences rather than the word of God.

A few evangelical pastors in the UK have since put out their own courses on the basics of the Christian faith, which are very good.

Sorry about that. The other website is by a Primitive Methodist turned Anglican who believes in the ongoing gifts of the Spirit.

Good morning Frank.

Yes, the Reformed Baptist minister Chris Hand UK wrote a simple review of the Alpha Course and published it as a booklet. I don't know if the article is the full text, but I remember getting the booklet myself and being helped by it.

]]Alpha Course Reviewed

I recommend the article by Chris Hand, but not the website where I found it. Oops. I thought it was something else. Man, I'm getting too old for this surfing business. Ha!

I have personally spoken to people who have attended an Alpha Course and seen the awful results. One man said he enjoyed it so much he went through the course three times and wanted to go again.

Thanks GS, appreciate that. We even had an incident at our house one day. My husband had been to the store and left the garage door up while he finished cutting up achicken to fry for lunch.( he loves to cook) and went out to throw away trash. A man sitting in my car in the garage. Said it was his friend's car and my husband pulled out his cell phone to call the police and he ran off. Later they came back for my husband to look at a picture and said they had found some stolen goods in woods near our home. He couldn't identify him because he had a hoodie on that covered most of his face. No, it is far from being the quite town of Jefferson.

Yes, the TB caught out a great number of Christian groups in this country, mainly evangelicals gone charismatic. I think it lasted about a decade, which shows how powerful it was, deluding goodly numbers of people. There was certainly a spiritual power involved in it, but I concluded it was not the Spirit of Jesus Christ. My guess is that it was just another of those endtimes deceptions.
Thankfully, a number of sensible Christian pastors wrote about it, and also about the Alpha Course, which was a great help at the time. To be effective, deception needs to be close to the real thing, needing discernment.
I didn't grasp what the question meant, "Anyone in particular"?
Sorry for the confusion. I chose the wrong wording. I meant any particular article from banner that you thought might be pertinent.

Ephesians 5:3-5

3 But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be once named among you, as becometh saints;

4 Neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not convenient: but rather giving of thanks.

5 For this ye know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.

Well, Ladybug, I never said, I agreed with her job, just said what she did for a living. She is a kind person that raised a kind, sweet daughter that loves my grandson dearly. I am a Christian going to a Baptist Church. I do not believe women are to teach men and I am in a older women's class, that has no clicks, no competing with one another and just love each other and support one another. They really care, and believe me it is so refreshing to be in their class. They are all widows with pain in their lives. One had a daughter that was murdered, another has a son that has been released from jail and staying in a garage apt. which is hers. Another's husband was murdered and she saw it. They owned a business and when they arrived at the work place he ran into a robbery in process and was shot and killed and then fled after the shooting. They bless me so much more than I ever could. Btw, we use a Ouartly to teach out of, so s.c. can relax. We are in Gen.23. The story of God using a picture, of Jesus that touched a man to be moved to change things that brought on the work of missions, and so much more was pretty awesome and would bless these women like it did me

Lurker, I too, will pray for your daughter's loss. How sad for your family this Thanksgiving. You are a kind, loving man and like John Uk said, it makes us stronger to be bound together in God's love. Three ropes tied together is stronger than one by itself. We post on here with heartache and pain in their and we never realize it. Thanks for sharing so we can pray. My grandmother had 10 babies at home with a midwife attending and one miscarriage. She told my mother much later( never forgot it) how much more painful it was than all the other births. She wasn't just talking about physical pain either. They lost one in childhood. The others lived long lives.

Glad to hear of your blessed day with family. I did read your other post and thank you for your well wishes.
My wife and I had a brief gathering with part of our family today but all was not happiness. Our youngest daughter, 31, married about 18 months ago, just miscarried her first pregnancy about 11 weeks in and is having a difficult time of it. Prayers for my daughter from anyone who has a heart to would be appreciated. Her name is Beth.
Brother Lurker,
You and your family are in my prayers! May His grace overwhelm them all!

Correct SC,

I have a like mind with all born again believers, as scripture says:

For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ.

The conversations and personal rants of some on here remind me of teens in junior high school.
I think that Frank is correct. There's no way that real Christians would post such comments-they're either computer-generated,plants/trolls or deeply insecure people starving for any kind of attention.
Whichever, they are threatened by and wish to water down truth.
