Lutheran pastor resigns, says same-sex marriage is a violation of God's word
The senior pastor at Messiah Lutheran Church in north Fargo has resigned his position, saying his views of the Bible are at odds with a U.S. Supreme Court decision in June making same-sex marriages legal across the country.
The high court's 5-4 decision was the catalyst for the Rev. Steve Berntson's decision to resign, he said. He wrote about his decision in a newsletter of the Eastern North Dakota Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, he said Tuesday.
Berntson said he believes same-sex marriage is a violation of God's word. While ELCA policy doesn't require him to perform such marriages, Berntson sees the the church eventually endorsing same-sex marriage.
The most current ELCA social statement on human sexuality doesn't officially endorse or deny same-sex marriage. It leaves it up to each individual congregation to determine its policy on such unions....
...glad that you liked the video,Get Real. Michael Hranek had recommended it in one of his posts a few months ago. Whenever I want a quick laugh,I watch it...puts things into perspective.Often reality makes for easy comedy.
Get Real,I have limited knowledge. I just know that the LCMC broke off from The ELCA because they did not endorse homosexuality, from my understanding of it. You may find that there are varying degrees of conservatism from one church to another as with the individuals who attend such. I find this to be true with seventh day adventists too. Some will say that anybody who worships on the day after the sabbath has "taken the mark of the beast", while others will actually attend other churches on the day after. I think that the sdas are dogmatic about annihilationism however.I'm not sure if they all subscribe to the writings of Ellen G White. My point being that sometimes there are differences within any particular "denomination". Myself,I figure that one is either saved or unsaved. Of course, that doesn't mean that I wouldn't steer clear of the more obvious false churches. I am very aware how difficult is to find God honoring churches. They are few and far between. And even the "conservative" ones seem inclined to compromise. Let me know how it goes. Thankfully,by God's grace,we still have many faithful Pastors that we can listen to via tapes, internet. James Vernon McGee comes to mind, for ex. chk this out on youtube- Wretched Radio special guest adolph hitler
sc, is this wikipedia article correct in it's description of LCMC?
"The group describes itself as "centrist" or "mainstream", noting that it stands between the more liberal ELCA and the more conservative Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod (LCMS)"
"On one important issue, LCMC stands apart from other conservative confessional Lutheran denominations: it permits, but does not require the ordination of female clergy. Some congregations' constitutions and bylaws allow only men to be installed into the Office of Holy Ministry."
"The LCMC has an evangelical catholic and charismatic strand. They have been falsely accused of being low church, however, this is baseless as many congregations hold to liturgical forms and vested celebrants when leading worship and administering the Sacrament of the Altar. The LCMC brings together the Sacramental, Evangelical and Charismatic nature of the church into one fold."
Just as an aside- there is a difference between the ELCA and the LCMC (lutheran congregations in mission for Christ)in regards to the issue of homosexuals. Not all lutherans are in agreement and have broken off from the ELCA as a result.
The Sodom attack on churches today is finding them wanting in Bible doctrines. PCUSA, Anglican/Episcopalian, Methodist, CofScotland and many other mainstream churches have all fallen into the trap of pleasing the world whilst rejecting the Bible as the Word of God. Those who accept the world will accept Sodom and Gomorrah ideology and prove they are Unbiblical Unchristian.
