Confederate Flag Becomes Point of Debate as Christian, Political Figures Weigh In
The Confederate flag has become a point of debate after the fatal shooting of nine black church members at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church last week. The flag, which to some represents racism, and to others states’ rights and history, still flies at the South Carolina State House.
Russell Moore, President of the Southern Baptist Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission, called for the flag’s removal in a blog post.
Moore said the flag represents many things, "but with those things it represents a defiance against abolition and against civil rights. The symbol was used to enslave the little brothers and sisters of Jesus, to bomb little girls in church buildings, to terrorize preachers of the gospel and their families with burning crosses on front lawns by night."...
kjg... Sure there were racist in the United States before the Civil War, but most of them left when the Confederate States were formed. The Union believed in the priciple that all men were created equal. The Confederacy not so much. If there were slave ships flying the American flag around in the 1860's, it is because the southern states had not yet succeeded. God wiped the Confederate States off of the map. The United States of America is still around though she sacrificed many lives to save the Union from the rebels. I, for one, will thank God for that. It's pretty clear in Scrprure that slave owners will not inherit the kingdom.
John for JESUS wrote: The Confederate States were racist and founded on the idea that slavery was acceptable and even good for the slaves. It never changed until God quickly destroyed it.
John, What makes you think that the Union was not racists? Abraham Lincoln, his cabinet members like Seward, believed that blacks should be shipped off to Africa because whites were superior and could not get along with an "inferior black race". Also, Northern slave ship owners thought slavery was good also just as well as Northern industrialists and financiers who relied on raw materials from the South. Did not God judge the North as well as the South with 620,000 killed in action. Should God also quickly destroy a country that aborts 50 million children? It is time to stop talking about the past and focus on the present injustice of abortion on the defenseless. This flag issue is a big distraction.
"You never let a serious crisis go to waste. And what I mean by that it's an opportunity..." - Rahm Emanuel
If the guy had used a rainbow LBGT flag none of the mainstream press or politicians would be talking about dumping the flag or blaming LBGT influence for his heinous crime. Why is there no focus on the families who have lost loved ones?
There is probably someone in Congress introducing new legislation for gun control. Now we have the Supreme Court saying a law doesn't mean what the writers of the law said it meant.(but Jim will say the ends justifies the means on that one)
It is rough to watch all this, but have to say with another servant of God that no matter how dire the circumstances, "Yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will joy in the God of my salvation. The Lord God is my strength; He will make my feet like deer’s feet, and He will make me walk on my high hills." Habakkuk 3:18,19
kjg... You are right, Confederates were not trying to exterminate slaves because they were cheap labor and could be raped without repercussions.
Over time the union did the right thing and outlawed slavery. The Confederate States were racist and founded on the idea that slavery was acceptable and even good for the slaves. It never changed until God quickly destroyed it.
It's a rewrite of history, not a battle against racism. People should take the blinders off. Manipulation of emotion has always had ulterior purpose in the world of government and politics. The flag isn't an issue, it's a tool.

I can hear the conversation at a Civil War battle field:
Little Bobby: What happened here, Sir? Park Ranger: Little blue men fought off the little evil grey man. Little Bobby: Why? Who were the little grey men? Park Ranger: I can't tell you. It is the "C" word.
John for JESUS wrote: kjg... What is the point of memorializing the Confederacy as if it was some great thing? It would be no different for Germans to have a memorial honoring Nazi Germany with the swastika flag.
The Nazis were determined to exterminate Jews off the face of the earth in what was called the "Final Solution". Show me the Confederate document where the Confederacy had a "Final Solution". If you are pointing to slavery, look at when some of the Northern states freed slaves (1865). If you want to get rid of memorials, start with Ulysses S. Grant's memorials. He was the last one after the war to set his slaves free. If you want to get rid of a flag, then get rid of the American flag which Union ships flew while transporting African slaves to the US.
I am still going to fly the American flag and the Confederate flag to honor my Unionist and Confederate ancestors on Memorial Day--even though these flags have a checkered past. If people want to take a sledge hammer and demolish Civil War memorials or desecrate Confederate graves, then what is next? Sounds like how Communists write history.
Have to agree with GS, we moved here 31 years ago and originally wonder why people didn't realize the War between the States had ended 119 years previous. When I first moved here I would have said that so called Confederate flag was just part of Southern heritage. I will now agree with GS, with rare exception those who proudly display the rebel flag are very much prejudice against blacks. In a southern suburb of Atlanta there is a prominent display of the flag, you ask any of the fine hard working black people with whom I work and they will tell you, it is like a big you are not welcome sign to them. Many Southern states added it back into predominance in the state flag etc. to defy desegregation. It may not have that meaning historically but that has changed. I am not for taking down the statues, war memorials, etc that do define the men who gave their lives during the war, it is part of our history. I am not saying slavery was the main issue of the war between the states, Lincoln did that to keep England from joining forces with the South as they had recently abolished slavery in their country. There is much slavery currently elsewhere that the people who are upset at the confederate flag care nothing about, so their "outrage" is purely political.
kjg... What is the point of memorializing the Confederacy as if it was some great thing? It would be no different for Germans to have a memorial honoring Nazi Germany with the swastika flag. Maybe they would even say, "I don't agree with them killing so many people, but they sure we're brave!" How did you like it when Muslims wanted to build a memorial mosque near the Twin Towers, was that cool?
John for JESUS wrote: Mike... They rebelled against oppression, not in order to protect it like the Confederacy! Again, God didn't allow it to last for to long. Do you really think God wanted the Confederate States to succeed and men were able to thwart His will?!
Again I ask, if the Emancipation Proclamation was about human rights, why were the slave holding States that favored the Union, exempted from it? You're kidding yourself if you think the North got into it to fight against slavery.
ps if you present a biblical view of how the North was on God's side in terms of slavery, it might be useful.

Farrakhan: I Don’t Get Debate Over Confederate Flag, ‘We Need to Put the American Flag Down’ declared, "I dont know what the h*ll the fight is about over the Confederate flag. We need to put the American flag down. Because weve caught as much h*ll under that as the Confederate flag, comments that were meant with cheers and applause. He added, Who are we fighting today? Its the people that carry the American flag"
I could see this coming as I have heard it for years...

The reason that South Carolina's state is the rebel flag is cause they were the first state to leave the Union and they left not because of slavery but because if the unconstitutional tariff laws that the north was passing and they were not wrong in doing that they did it for the benefit of their citizens and the south had more Christian generals then the north General Robert E. Lee was a Christian General "Stonewall" Jackson was a Christian and their President Jefferson Davis was a Christian . The famous general Ulysses S. Grant was a drunk
