Christian Mom: Leggings Could Lead Men to ‘Think Lustful Thoughts’
A Christian wife and mother from Oregon has attracted attention and debate after recently revealing on her blog that she has decided to no longer wear leggings for fear of causing men to “think lustful thoughts.”

Veronica Partridge, 25, penned a short post on January 5 titled, “Why I Chose to No Longer Wear Leggings,” during which she explained why she has decided to stop wearing yoga pants, questioning whether donning them could entice a man to look at her “in a way he should only look at his wife.” ...

Thank you Frank, Penny, Christopher, and Unprofitable Servant for your prayers. I need prayers as I am so extremely lonely and down as well as having mental and physical disabilities. I had a Christian friend who visited last week after not having seen her for years. She was eager to see me again and arranged to come over this week too with her children to watch Veggie Tales while we visited. It seemed to good to be true that I was going to have a life with happiness and friendship. She ended up booking a weekly activity for her child on the one day she and I both had free in a week. I have caregivers look after me, and that take up a lot of time. Last year I had NOT ONE friend visit me, and now that my hopes were up I feel shattered.

In keeping with the topic it disappoints me when modesty is usually referred to as being the sole responsibility of women. This, in a day when many men wear tight clothes to show off their sculpted bodies. And, men/pastors making sexual or flirtatious jokes at Church. Women are required at fundamentalist Churches to have long hair and skirts, but the men are clean shaven with modern haircuts wearing nice suits looking something like out of a GQ Magazine.

Patterened socks "
Many women simply 'love the world' and follow worldly fashions, hence they wear leggings that look like women's tights. Would they have gone out in just their tights 5 years ago?

But it is the fashion!

Methinks that is the problem with some 'Christian' women, the fashion magazine and worldly TV and media is their guide, not their Bible, or chaste and godly church members who are probably elderly ladies in their own church!"

Methinks, you're right. I'd also add that many haven't really counted the cost nor what it means to deny self, pick up the cross, and follow Jesus. I have my own personal stories that stengthen my convictions. There's a difference in the way I'm treated (compared to my pants day) and I've noticed a lot of people will just be convicted by my dress alone...justifying themselves when no word was said. The way we dress does matter.

Yes, those can lead some men to think lustful thoughts... But it can also get some men to get sick and want to vomit.

Of course that is why the Bible mentions 'modesty', because fallen men will indeed have a problem with lust IF women are dressed so immodestly!

I won't call it an 'average' church but what do you think when you see Christian women with tight fitting tops and much cleavage on display and skirts so short that they ride up to the high thighs when seated displaying more than any dare mention. Women in the latest leggings just because it is 'the fashion' and that would be the Pastor's wife.

I wonder why the Victorians wore dresses to the ankles and how unfashionable when we look through 21st century eyes! It would be hard to lust after a woman in such a skirt, but let us be honest if the skirt is up the thighs and the pants are skin tight, then surely the woman has a moral problem never mind the man with his heart and eyes of lust?

Once this "Christian" woman and others learns what this means - “And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison” (James 3:6,8), she and others will speak words that tend to life. If she knows how men think, then she should consider the flames from expressing her own thoughts about this. You certainly can't prohibit women from wearing them. So why bring up the matter? And you can't stop men from looking.

Deuteronomy refers to cross dressing not the wearing of pants or breeches. We need to be honest here. Both men and women wore tunics back then.
I believe God called women especially to be modest in their dressing as He knew men are visual creatures. A woman can wear skirts that are tight and short and be immodest. A woman can wear loose pants that give her shape no definition.
Putting it down to whether you wear a skirt or pants would be unreasonable. I know godly women who wear pants and who wear skirts.
And it is more modest to Wear pants with a long shirt when you are doing an active activity such as hiking or playing sport.

Will try to be concise. Michael H brought up a good point that man is responsible for his own actions and sc brought a good point when she said we should avoid feeding the flesh and instead should feed our faith.

I think we could learn from Joseph in this area.

He feared God (how can I do this evil and sin against God)
He fought temptation. (she approached him often)
He fled youthful lusts. (avoiding opportunities to fulfill the lust of the flesh)

Last, we need to be careful not to condemn our brethren so quickly who fall, God said David was a man after His own heart and he fell in this area. Just a reminder to us to watch and pray that we enter not into temptation.

I Peter 5:8,9 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: Whom resist stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world.

We are what we take in. If we feed our flesh we will have a much more difficult time resisting/fleeing temptation.
The truth sets us free. If we live by it, we don't have to be a slave to sin or our lustful passions.

me and my wife have had this discussion on multiple occasions. Yoga pants are not pants to be worn in public. They fit too tightly and I can see every part of the woman.leggings or tights worn under very short skirts are also suggestive, and therefore immodest in my opinion. you can tell me to get over it, but that doesn't change what causes me to lust. if you don't care what happens to me, then dress how you want. I have no right to tell you what to wear. But if women want to help their brothers in Christ, then modesty is a big step.
No disagreement re: Women, and men, should always be modestly dressed. An issue is this:

"but that doesn't change what causes me to lust." Women are not the cause of a man lusting. The man is.

James 1:13
"Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man:"

God neither tempts directly, nor indirectly through a woman's dress habits.

James 1:14
"But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed."

"His own lust" puts responsibility where it belongs.

"if you don't care what happens to me.."

Put another way: "You make me lust." Nope. But it does reflect the times.

I think that what might help brothers in Christ more when around immodestly dressed women is to consider/recognize the ugliness of spirit which lurks inside the decorated package donning the sleazy attire. Those who love God and set no unclean thing before their eyes will fare better.
These women who dress like this need to know the Lord and men need to quit being so duped. Would you be attracted to a hag/demon if they were immodestly attired?
It's always easier to be attracted to an image when one doesn't have to relate to it..."vain imaginations".
Most women who dress immodestly do so being very well aware of what they're doing. Men beware! If you actually got to know the image behind the apparel, you would have rather wished that you had seen it for what it is instead of falling into its snare.

Mr Partridge, you have done well in finding a spouse that wants to honor the Lord and not stumble the brethren.

A tip of the hat to Eibret in Belfast as well.

Great that more women are taking a stand for modest clothing! I can't quote on this device, but I second what SF said. Before I was saved I tried to dress as masculine as possible... But the Lord brought me back from my rebellion

It's refreshing as a man to be with Christian sisters who dress modestly. Conversely it is discouraging to fellowship with immodest sisters. The Scripture commands woman to be modest. This is not Sharia law, it is however not wearing leggings. See Titus 2:5. Pity there is even a debate on this.

I agree, with most comments on here, at least we are all in agreement on this issue, that women are to dress modestly. At our church you will find a mixture of dresses thigh level with boots on or spike heels. Jeans on so tight it's almost embarassing especially when the band starts up and we have movement to keep time with the music. Anything goes as far as dress code .Some of them wear leggings with a short skirt over them. This has come up before and I will never forget what one sister on here said," Ladies dress modestly and save the eye candy for your husband" Good advice. To me it's distracting in the worship service but thats just my opinion because I haven't heard anything from the pulpit on the scripture to dress modestly.
