Happy 1660th Birthday Augustine

Of the hundreds of thousands of published Christian writers over the centuries since the Scripture books were completed, none have had a level of influence to compare to Augustine. Even now in 2014, he remains a #1 favorite for huge numbers of both Evangelical leaders and Roman Catholic leaders. He was a scholar and an evangelist; he was a faithful senior leader of the church universal and a charismatic healer who made house calls. Now he is 1660 years old. Happy Birthday, Augustine!

How does this ancient, African, Christian writer sustain such a broad and faithful following throughout the centuries, and around the world? In this brief article, let me suggest what I think is the main reason for Augustine's continued profound influence. ...

Jim. I suppose you only believing four/fifths of the truth you would attack Augustine. But at least he glorified Christ by being absolute and positive about His death on the cross and the work of His atonement with God.
Your Amyraldian, Arminian, negative claim that Christ's atonement on the cross did not work for everybody undermines the atonement and perhaps you will be the one with the defect which Gehenna will scorch.

Augustine has most likely spent the last 1500+ years in Gehenna. He abandoned his son for something he considered more important, church work. His eschatology while it might not condemn him as a non-Christian, certainly means he isn't going to get any birthday presents from me! Augustine - What a good Calvinist he was. Which in turn reminds us what a good Christian he was.

"S.Taylor,
I would have to know what exactly is " speculative" about his theology to affirm your statement. Have you read any of his works, after his Manichean days? His theology is Christ centered."

The perpetual virginity of Mary would be one.

While he was a godly saint, his speculative theology was off and has done untold damage to the Church ever since. Like Luther, people would be horrified at some of the things he actually said.

Augustine' s Confessions and City of God stand head and shoulders above all other ancient texts. Not only did he speak to what IS, he pointed to the great I AM . Thank God for His work through Augustine.
