5 facts about Mormon polygamy
Yesterday, two new essays about polygamy became available on the LDS Church’s official website, joining a third that appeared late last year.

These statements contained some bombshells about Mormonism’s past that will not be news to most students of history but may indeed prove disturbing for some rank-and-file Latter-day Saints.

Five highlights of the revelations:

1) “Joseph Smith was sealed to a number of women who were already married.” Back in January after the first Gospel Topics statement about polygamy was released, one criticism I had was that there was no mention of the historical truth of polyandry in Nauvoo. It wasn’t widespread, but it did happen. Now the Church has openly acknowledged it.* ...

Good morning, or should I say good afternoon Pilgrim. I tend to agree with your thoughts. As you might suspect, my thoughts are a little different than mainstream. I think polygamy is a cultural thing and as long as the fellow isn't convicted of it being a sin and as long at isn't illegal in his culture, then he should simply do what he wants and of course what is best for his wives. Another question that is really interesting is why would anyone want 5 wives. I have never even read of a culture that demands polygamy. And it would disqualify him from being a church leader.
I can't argue with your thoughts about being led by the Spirit.
Good afternoon Pilgrim. Yes, I hope you didn't think it a copout, as I could not think of any scripture which deals with that. But if the Spirit of God reveals the mind of God to his people (as he does), then if God thought it wrong, he would let the man know. But sure, I would leave it alone. Thanks for bringing that up, Frank. It must have happened many times, and it would be interesting to hear from an evangelist who came across it.

There must be evangelists who have encountered this dilemma, Frank. It would be interesting to hear how they coped with such a situation. Perhaps it would be best to allow the Lord to speak to him and go from there, for "they that are led by the Spirit of God are the sons of God".

It's like one guy in our church once said. .. To be truly repentant you must divorce your second wife and go back to the first. I think that's wrong. What if she's already married and has kids? And the Bible strictly says not to go back once you've divorced and been with another.
It's definitely an interesting topic :-)

Sorry, this is a little off topic.
I have often wondered about this aspect of polygamy. You go into an African nation and witness to this fellow who has 5 wives and he receives Christ and is born again from above and truly wants to repent of all of his sins. You then tell him he can only have 1 wife and he has to divorce the other ones he has. Which ones does he divorce? His wives are no longer virgins and each has born children to him. What do you tell this new brother in Christ? Is it a sin to keep all of his wives even though having multiple wives is a sin?
