After Threatening Letter from Atheists Discount for Praying Dropped

The North Carolina diner that had attracted widespread attention because of a 15 percent discount it sometimes gave customers who pray before meals has decided to drop the discount over fears of legal action.

A lawyer from the Freedom from Religion Foundation atheist organization sent a letter to Mary’s Gourmet Diner in Winston-Salem, calling the discount illegal under federal civil rights laws, the Winston-Salem Journal reported.

Christopher, I read your comments and pray for many around here. I often don't reply because the things that I need to say I simply cannot say here. Same with many others like Jessica Dawson. I'd rather not filter out my language when it comes to such personal and important discussions, but know many here are in my prayers.

God bless you Christoper,

I wasn't sure if you read my message on this thread from 5 days ago? Your quote above was from another thread, but I used it as an opportunity to make sure you received my message from 8/18/14 1:01 PM on this thread. I am still struggling myself, and need help from God to undo the damage from adults in my childhood who gave me a very skewed version of God which has damaged me even to this moment...

I appreciate your sharing, and hope you will keep on sharing!

“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” Isaiah 41:10 NIV

God is surely to be feared both reverently and by the fear of dread by those of us who are saved. The author of Hebrews reminds Christians who willfully sin that it is a fearful thing to fall into God's hands. Yet, the fear of dread is also experienced by the unsaved (Luke 12:5) but not so the fear of reverence. After telling us about the precious promises that God dwells and walks with us, that He would deign to be our God and acknowledge us as His people, we are admonished to perfect holiness in the fear of God (II Cor. 7:1) Even the saints in heaven have a reverential fear of God (Revelation 15:4) John UK would point out it is part of the new covenant.

That being said, we at times struggle with how could God love us. (Romans 8:38-39) The Bible reminds us that Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us,.." in I John 3:16a. Thus at the times when we need our faith in love of God strengthened it would do us good to spend much time meditating upon the passion of Christ found at the end of the gospels or in passages like Psalm 22 and Isaiah 53.

Greetings Christopher in The Mighty Name of Jesus!

I have thought often about your post: When I was in grade 1 and 2, I had an 'old-school' teacher who read us the Bible every school-day, and every school-day we said The Lord's Prayer.

We were not permitted to use the washroom except for recess and lunch, and peed-pants in class was a regular occurrence — as was children sitting on the heel of their foot to prevent themselves from peeing on their pants or dresses. I was once physically assaulted by her for trying to go to the restroom.

Mrs. Voth, read the Bible through, not withholding from 6 and 7 year olds the story of Onan 'spilling his seed' and God killing him (Genesis 38:8-10); nor of a woman being raped to death (Judges 19:24-26). Mrs. Voth became the filter as a young adult through which I understood what I thought was the character of God. I relate to the feelings you have described to a 't.' God bless!

Is it me, or is this an odd statement?

"God can only love because of the Lord Jesus."

Or, "God the Father can only love because of God the Son."

Or, "God the Father was angry with everyone until God the Son died for sin, then he loved everyone."

Or, "God the Father is angry with the wicked every day and wish they would stop their wickedness; then if they turned to Jesus, God would love them instead of being angry with them."

Or, "God the Father was angry with all men because of sin, but then God the Son redeemed the elect, so God the Father put aside his anger and replaced it with love for his elect, but he was still angry with those not chosen."

Or, "None of the above." ?

Thanks! And yes, Dorcas...they did! : )

The verses give me fleeting mental glimpses of the side of God that I never really see clearly. All I have ever felt is fear and felt like I was walking on egg shells, always messing up and God always being disappointed, angry...fed up. I know I need to be in the middle somewhere, being fearful, obediant, etc, etc, but I need to comprehend somehow that there is a whole other side to God that I don't see clearly. I view Him as very stern and iron fisted...and distant. I know this is wrong and verses like these give me a glimpse at what I have been missing all along.

I don't know why, but I picture a Mr. Bean skit of him going to the diner and him keep trying to get noticed praying ~ while everyone else around him is getting discounts! I like the skit of Mr. Bean going to church and only knowing the chorus of the hymn.

On a serious note: Jesus had asked people not to tell anyone about some of His healings, and people went ahead and noised about their healings. This made Jesus a target of jealous authorities.

How much pain it would have saved the business owner if the receipt hadn't been shared on the internet?!

Chris...these will warm your heart.
Then they that feared the Lord spake often one to another: and the Lord heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before Him for them that feared the Lord, and that thought upon His name.
And they shall be mine, saith the Lord of hosts, in that day when I make up my jewels; and I will spare them, as a man spareth his own son that serveth him.
Malachi 3:16-17.

like a father who disciplines his child out of love, God only wants the best for us but breaking us of certain things or getting us to see His way instead of our way can be misinterpreted, like the child being spanked, as anger instead of love that they don't quote understand, see clearly, or regognize.

I agree Chris...very good view! The view to hang on to.

Luke 10:21

In that same hour he rejoiced in the Holy Spirit and said, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to little children; yes, Father, for such was your gracious will.

Zephaniah 3:17

The LORD thy God in the midst of thee is mighty; he will save, he will rejoice over thee with joy; he will rest in his love, he will joy over thee with singing.

I tend to view God as a drill sargent at times, with an iron fist and perpetually disappointed. Verses like this bring me back to reality by reminding me that first and foremost, He loves us far beyond our human understanding and because of that immense love, he wants to perfect us to bring us closer to Him and eventually be with him. The process of perfecting can give the illusion of an angry God who is out to get us, when the truth is that, like a father who disciplines his child out of love, God only wants the best for us but breaking us of certain things or getting us to see His way instead of our way can be misinterpreted, like the child being spanked, as anger instead of love that they don't quote understand, see clearly, or regognize.

Nothing to do with the topic, but just read this and really like it:

Song of Solomon | 7:10

I am my beloveds and his desire is for me.

Simple, but thought provoking if U really take some quiet time to think about it.

Who knows what the motivation for offering a discount for people who pray was on the part of the owner? I might suggest that it may have been best to not have bothered. People who wouldn't have ordinarily prayed, wouldn't be tempted to make a show and seek the accolades of the owners. People who did pray before the discount would have still been praying regardless and those who don't,wouldn't have cared. It is interesting that "atheists" are always bothered by something which they are so emphatic to deny, however, namely the existence of God. Ultimately, God is unhindered. People can't police silent prayers. And the prayer of a righteous man is always heard!

It simply comes down to the fact that a private organization has the right to offer a 15% discount to anyone period. You don't have to like it, if you don't you can simply decide not to take your business there. These atheists literaly think they're the king of the world, and that everyone should catter to their wishes!

"A lawyer from the Freedom from Religion Foundation atheist organization sent a letter to Mary’s Gourmet Diner in Winston-Salem, calling the discount illegal"

It is such a shame that these ignorant and blind atheists are fools, full of abominable works, there are none of them that can do any good.

Psalm 14:1 "The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good.
2 The LORD looked down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there were any that did understand, and seek God.
3 They are all gone aside, they are all together become filthy: there is none that doeth good, no, not one.
4 Have all the workers of iniquity no knowledge? who eat up my people as they eat bread, and call not upon the LORD."

The owners of that diner were not very bright for knuckling under to those stupid atheists. I would have told those stupid atheists it is none of their business if I gave discount to those patrons who pray before their meal. And it really is no business of atheists.
