Are Tattoos on Christians a ‘Heathen Practice’?

Controversial Christian TV host Pat Robertson has made it clear he isn’t a fan of body ink, telling viewers Wednesday that “tattooing is a heathen practice,” regardless of whether the image one chooses is religious in nature.

“It doesn’t make it okay because it’s religious, believe me,” Robertson said in reference to crucifix tattoos. “It could just be the same tattoo as some hoochie-cooch girl. I mean it doesn’t really make any difference.”

He then pointed to the Bible to note that Old Testament scripture commands believers not to mark their bodies. ...

Using Leviticus 21 as a statement from God that tattoos are wrong is just plain bad exegesis. There was a specific audience in view here. God was speaking to Moses, telling him to speak to the priests (meaning, not all the Jews), the sons of Aaron, on a whole litany of issues including baldness, and the status of family members. Tattoos do not involve cutting the flesh. Cutting of the flesh referred to a pagan religious custom that apparently some Jews were adopting.

If only he knew. The h c girl is bad. The crucifix (the phony, emaciated RC christ still hanging on a cross)is worse.
Speaking of the crucifix...reminds me of the time I went into a friend's bathroom and saw the crucifix sitting on top of the tank of the toilet...which is pretty much not far from where it belonged any way.

S. Taylor writes,
"Since we are under grace the O.T. Law does not apply to us today (actually it only applied to the children of Israel anyhow). However, what we do get from the O. T. Is God's heart and to me that is more significant and important than the Law."

Although we are not saved by the "works of the law", that does not mean that the law does not apply to us. If that were the case we would have no school master to bring us to Christ. Moreover, we would have no knowledge of what is holy, just, and good. It is that antithesis of the Law and Gospel that has brought about so much confusion and has lead many to think it is okay for Christians to get tattoos.

Lisa I would agree. Since we are under grace the O.T. Law does not apply to us today (actually it only applied to the children of Israel anyhow). However, what we do get from the O. T. Is God's heart and to me that is more significant and important than the Law.

Of priests
Lev 21
5 They shall not make baldness upon their head, neither shall they shave off the corner of their beard, nor make any cuttings in their flesh.

To say we cannot is legalistic and also from these verses we cannot say this as the verses were for the ot - but from these verses we can guess at what god feels about fashion disfigurement - I would guess that it is indeed pagan ?

As Christians we must always ask ourselves, "why do I want something, or why do I want to wear something, or why do I want to buy something?" We need to uncover our motives. After that we need to compare our desire for something with the Word of God.

Hardly anyone alive today would deny that our western culture is in a serious decline. One of the evidences of that decline are the freakish appearances of ungodly people. A quick visit to London or New York, and beyond, would quickly confirm that. Why would a godly person choose to imitate what the ungodly are doing to themselves. I feel like the Church just meekly follows the world around like a little puppy with a big collar around her neck. The Church just can't stand to be different anymore.

God made our bodies perfect, do we think we can improve upon that? Tatoos are to the human body what a bumper stickers are to a Ferrari.

Tatoos might impress peers, but we're mistaken if we think God is impressed or doesn't care.

Dignity comes forth from the inside of the cup. I used to care about how the outside looked, which is why I used to get tattoos. But I don't even remember or even notice I still have them now. That is what is meant by not caring about the outside of the cup

we must care about the inside and the outside of the cup, where is our dignity?

we are the temple of the Holy Spirit. Did the Hebrews spray paint the outside of the temple or treat it with respect?

tattoos are a heathen practice, and its not healthy either. and a waste of money.

"A tattooist in many cultures is also a shaman, magick-man, priest or priestess. According to the dictionary a shaman is a "intermediary between the natural and supernatural worlds, using magic to cure illness, foretell the future, control spiritual forces, etc." (www.infoplease.com/ipd/A0648969.html)

"Tattooing is often a magical rite in the more traditional cultures, and the tattooist is respected as a priest or shaman." (Michelle Delio, Tattoo: The Exotic Art)

"In Fiji, Fromosa, New Zealand and in certain of the North American Indian tribes, tattooing was regard as a religious ceremony, and performed by priests or priestesses." (R Scutt, Art, Sex and Symbol)

"The actual tattooing process, which involved complex ritual and taboos, could only be done by priests and was associated with beliefs which were secrets known only to members of the priestly caste. . . Hambly concluded that historically tattooing had originated in connection with ancient rites of scarification and bloodletting which were associated with religious practices intended to put the human soul in harmony with supernatural forces and ensure continuity between this life and the next." (Gilbert S. Tattoo History)"

Some piercings must be ok. Song of Solomon talks about the bride with ear and noise rings (from memory). GOD also commands slaves to be pierced when they wanted to stay with a family forever.

I'm sure tattoos are a pagan/heathen practice. Christians simply should NOT get them. As Christine has said, due to their permanence, we can't judge Christians who have tattoos that came before salvation however.

We are not to learn (copy) the ways of the heathen! Why do modern "Christians" want to do this all the time?

"How did these nations serve their gods? even so will I do likewise.
31Thou shalt not do so unto the LORD thy God: for every abomination to the LORD, which he hateth, have they done unto their gods." Deuteronomy 12:30b-31a
