Pope Francis tells couples not to substitute dogs and cats for children

Pope Francis on Monday (June 2) warned married couples against substituting cats and dogs for children — a move that he said leads to the “bitterness of loneliness” in old age.

The pope made his comments as he celebrated daily Mass with 15 married couples in the chapel at the Santa Marta residence where he lives inside the Vatican.

He reminded the couples, whose marriages ranged from 25 to 60 years, of the need for faithfulness, perseverance and fertility in maintaining a Christian marriage. ...

I've always found it interesting that priests do marraige councilling, give marital advice, and council couples prior to marraige on what marraige is about, how husbands and wives should interact, etc, etc. Not to mention having to listen to every gievious sexual sin and exploit during confession whil being and being forced to remain celebate. Must be torture for some.

Strat says...
"No more silly than those who have kids trying to tell those who don't what they are supposedly missing when the can plainly see it and don't miss it or want it,people should just live their own lives and make their own choices and leave others to do the same.
This Pope lives in a big glass house,he is not married and has no children and he is the leader of a religion that unbiblically requires its priest to be celibate, there is no biblical foundation for such a requirement and it got started because in past the Catholic chrch was often stuck with caring for the widows and orphans of priest who died,so they decided priest had to be celibate...this man has no moral authority what so ever and displays gross hypocrisy.....and probably has a pet or two."

Ok.
I was referring to the Batchelor in Rome.
I agree.

Well yes of course children are supposed to come along after getting married. That is exactly what the Catholic Church has always taught about the subject matter.

Stevenr, the verse you are referring too (1 Corinthians 7:1,2) is talking about marriage. It says nothing about having children. Be fruitul and multiply hasn't changed. When speaking to the Pharisees Jesus refrenced Genesis 1 for what God desires in a marriage-part of that is having children (it's the natural thing to do). See Malachi 2:15.

Back to Strat/JohnY
While command was once "be fruitful and multiply" I believe Strat is correct now; Paul gives the advise to not, if you can contain your lust.
Assuming all things stay the same would have us doing many things God later changed; I believe that before the flood man was a vegetarian... Remember to read the WHOLE Bible.

Why, yes, John Y., priests believe in being fruitful and multiplying. One of his favorite lines to save face with his friends when I have shown him up is something like 'what does a 30 year old man, never married, a virgin, wears a robe(dress) and thinks he is the son of g*d know about anything?' Of course, he omits the living in luxury part as he doesnt believe CHRIST is in heaven seated at the RIGHT hand of GOD the FATHER. However, the devil does know Christ is there, which makes your statement all the more interesting.

Im always amazed how well the god of this world and his childrens thoughts converge so perfectly.

My Grandparents had thirteen children and were a part of the Roman Catholic Church — when they needed help, they would have a nun going through their cupboards to make sure they were 'poor enough' to receive help. My Grandmother had a really hard time looking after so many children, so why wasn't the Catholic Church there helping to raise them?! Rather than the nuns sitting in their proverbial ivory towers, they could have been helping women to change diapers, wash diapers, and bottle feed babies — not just demand people have children and then walk away!

Maybe the Catholic Church should make it their manifesto to clothe and feed all the children who are starving as it is?! Maybe they should be helping women in poverty to feed their children, so women are not coerced to give their children up for adoption and never see them again?!

"Arise, cry out in the night: in the beginning of the watches pour out thine heart like water before the face of the Lord: lift up thy hands toward him for the life of thy young children, that faint for hunger in the top of every street." ~ Lamentations 2:19 KJV

And he said, Woe unto you also, ye lawyers! for ye lade men with burdens grievous to be borne, and ye yourselves touch not the burdens with one of your fingers. ~ Luke 11:46 KJV

No he is not correct marriage and children are a choice,if the passages in Corinthians are true,if they are not true but a lie then the bible contradicts it's self,as far as Animals are concerned people have just gone overboard on them like they have everything else.
The Pope just wants more Catholics like the Mormons want more Mormons, there are or will be 7 billion people in the world and rather than compete they just want to convert in house.
Genesis 1:28 states "Be fruitful and multiply". That is a command from God for married couples to have children if they are able to. Otherwise they should adopt children if they are not able to conceive and have children of their own.

I agree Dolores....God has given us all good things to enjoy. No all of us are blessed with Godly children and family. So having a pet or pets can help ease the loneliness that one experiences in later life.

I am an animal lover and it hate to see animals abused as well as children, elderly people or anyone else for that matter.I have four children and they loved having pets. It was a learning experience for them, teaching them to care for something besides themselves. To give care and love to them and in return they were given unconditional love back. My daughter was given a 6yr old poodle by a friend of mine. She was a widow and traveled a lot so she gave her to someone to be good to her.She was there for our daughter during a very diffucult time when she didn't feel loved by even her family. She gave her unconditional love, which reminds me of my dog that is there for me when I feel neglected by my adult children who have flown the nest and have lives of their of their own. I see love in her in eyes and she senses when I am troubled or saddened( can't say the same about some who ridicule and scoff for having emotions?) Jesus wept at the grave of Lazarus.Pets to ederly are a god send, they are good for high blood pressure, help you recover from surgery faster, taken to a nursing home brings joy to them, as well as children in sick beds.So don't say they are bad who have pets, God doesn't. When we come home after being gone and greeted by our excited, tail wagging dog, like my husban
