Fight Church: “Can you really love your neighbor as yourself and then punch him in the face?”

A new documentary exploring the world of Mixed Martial Arts, known as MMA Fighting, and Christianity is set to premiere April 24 at the Independent Film Festival of Boston.

Titled “Fight Church,” the documentary follows several pastors and fighters in a journey to reconcile their faith with a sport that some consider violent and barbaric.

In the film Oscar-winning director Daniel Junge and Bryan Storkel pose the question, “Can you really love your neighbor as yourself and then punch him in the face?”

According to ABC News Pastor Paul Burress, who is featured in the documentary, defends his unconventional evangelism methods. ...

Not only would I add to what GSTexas said, but also:

Matthew 5
38 "You have heard that it was said, 'AN EYE FOR AN EYE, AND A TOOTH FOR A TOOTH.'
39 "But I say to you, do not resist him who is evil; but whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn to him the other also.---]]NASB

One can also say violent sports are often time detrimental to the viewer as well as the participant.

Sports has never lived up to it's claims of building character and good will yet the church has embraced it for decades.

They rail against music and refer to its many vile and vulgar habits and warn against any involvement in any Music other than Classical or that played by blue haired old ladies sitting at a Piano, yet completely ignore the rampant vulgarity and perverse behavior of sports stars.....pick your poison I guess.

While I can see the problems, I can't see 1 Timothy 3 as a valid passage to use to prove it... Paul was talking about bullies and argumentative men, specifically those who were starting fights out if anger, bitterness or just poor spirit... Wrestling, boxing and MMA can be done in a friendly manner; sparring is good exercise for both as long as no one gets upset. (But, that can happen in any sport. I remember playing Church league basketball several years ago; it was great fellowship until one guy from another Chirch got upset over getting a ball stripped from him and started cursing and threatening... We stopped the league after that...)

This is mind boggling. What is scary is that pastors like this are often hailed for their "evangelistic" innovation while doctrinally sound pastors are asked to leave by evangelical congregations.
