Simple, Penny, the Ukraine has had it's own culture for centuries, I suppose if you asked a Ukrainian he'd tell you Russia got it's culture and religion from them and not vice-versa. As can be seen from what happen in WWII, Ukrainians wanted a separate country. Stalin moved in a lot of Russians, which makes the situation even more volatile, since the Russian immigrants have an affinity for Russia.
