Are Genetically Modified Foods Harmful or Helpful?

Genetically modified foods (GMO, GE, or biotech foods) are foods produced from organisms that have had changes introduced into their DNA through methods of genetic engineering.

Mounting research published in peer-reviewed journals reveals a wide variety of health hazards associated with consuming genetically engineered foods and the chemicals that accompany these crops:

“Independent studies with animals showed stunted growth, impaired immune systems, bleeding stomachs, abnormal and potentially precancerous cell growth in the intestines, impaired blood cell development, misshaped cell structures in the liver, pancreas and testicles, altered gene expression and cell metabolism, liver and kidney lesions, partially atrophied livers, in?amed kidneys, less developed organs, reduced digestive enzymes, higher blood sugar, in?amed lung tissue, increased death rates and higher offspring mortality as well. ...

Penny, this particular grain doesn't take any different pesticides than "natural rice." A founder of Green Peace was so disgusted with Green Peace over this issue that he quit and started up his own organization, a discussion on--GM crops: is opposition to golden rice wicked?

well, there's no in between with the grains because they cross pollinate, and the natural seed ends up being contaminated with gm dna, and because exhorbinant amounts of pesticides are required.

looks like I'll be buying my corn from Mexico in the meantime...

Just to point out I believe in caution and not abandoning GM foods entirely, Is Opposition to Golden Rice ‚ÄúWicked‚ÄĚ? -- probably.

Chris, there are no natural crops, they have been domesticated just like animals. If you read my 1st post it didn't give card blanche the GMO industries, and this has yoga lover has some good points:

Top reasons why there are problems with genetically engineered food:

Genetically engineered food does not have to be labeled in the U.S.
Most processed foods (boxed cereals, chips, cookies, frozen dinners, etc.) utilize corn, soy, canola and cottonseed oil which all have genetically modified ingredients.
High levels of pesticides are used in GMOs.
Use of antibiotics in GMO development - problem there being low-doses of antibiotics in foods may make antibiotics less effective in humans.
New intolerance to allergies - crossing plant genes may bring on new strains of allergies in consumers.

small farmers and small agricultural business have been calling out the warnings as their lands get poisoned, their seed brought through court and their foods swat teamed while their customers speak highly of them.

while M attaches legislation to congressional bills giving themselves immunity from being sued, and spends their millions in elections to ensure that the public will not be notified when they are buying their products?

while we debate communism v. capitalism, the reality of corporate strength and wealth that can be larger than some nations combining with the arm of the state..... before our eyes, ocare, same thing, written by insurance companies, I presume, but enforced by IRS. now that corporations have rghts, and we traded indl rghts for safety, well I can say things are never boring anymore.

Monsanto is truly an evil company. About 10 yrs ago in Jim's NE, they bought a relatively small plot of land in the midst of large corn producing farms. Monsanto then used crop dusters for their parcel and the fertilizer oversprayed; within 24 hours it killed the others farmers' crops. After a lengthy court battle, the farmers were told they wouldn't receive a dime. So Monsanto offered them a peace pipe of sorts and sold them THEIR seed at a fraction on the cost. All the farmers took it that years and the reduced rate of the crop duster to fertilize. Next year, some of them didn't want to use Monsanto - NOTHING grew in their fields, not even a green shoot came up. To this day, there is one hold out and weeds don't even grow in his field. The other five farmers all grow Monsanto seed, at no reduced costs...

In the world of creepy GM animals, the U of Wyo has genetically engineered a goat that milks spider webbing. They are hoping to use their "technology" in US troops gear. Indeed, "oh, what a tangled web we weave..."

Hey Anne...good one...ha-ha.

Jim Wrote:
"I doubt there is a grain that hasn't been genetically modified" ...and I would add no crop, no field that hasn't been polluted. Consider Monsanto and how their GM seeds blow with the wind making their way to natural crops. Monsanto takes these poor farmers to court for illegally growing their proprietary seeds, when they were not even aware and had no control in that matter.

Even though all that we know is in a state of entropy, there's nothing that science can do to change that. They are constantly messing with what God has created to make last/live longer, grow bigger, healthier, etc, and none of it ends well. All of their meddling ends in negative effects...sickness, pain, death. I couldn't believe it when I learned how much of our food is being genetically modified, its potential harm, and the DeSanto seeds blowing and cross pollinating/polluting, nearby natural crops. They should have never been allowed to begin meddling with the seeds God creates, the animals He provides for meat, or the human body, beyond treating sickness.
Not unlike prescription drugs, look at the research and warnings for GMO's...sickness, mutation, death, and where do we go now, now that the soil around the world, the animals, etc, have been polluted with what science thought was best?
Christopher, you make some most excellent points on this phenomena occurring at the end of the world. Especially the simple fact that it will be irreversible, even if it is concluded by experts in the field that GM foods will be highly damaging to the human race. They are here to stay.

To which I say =

Charisma Magazine isn't an expert on Christianity let alone GM foods! The CDC thinks genetically modified foods should be tested to see any reactions from humans before they are released for general public use, e.g., Investigation of Human Health Effects Associated with Potential Exposure to Genetically Modified Corn (PDF).

I got news for you, I doubt if there is a grain that hasn't been genetically modified. The wheat and corn you are eating now, are almost nothing like what the originals were like. All food you eat, hmm, probably even the chickens you eat have been genetically modified, not to say the cows and hogs.

As far as religion goes, this outfit doesn't know which end is up either, A Look at the Pentecostal/Charismatic Movement - Is it Biblical?

some local kids here fed the chickens real grain and the suicide* gm grain.

*meaning that gene inserted so that seed can not be replanted for new plant, thereby sterile, unlike all of nature

prior chickens normal

latter chickens bloated, difficulty walking and not taking care of young.
