Self-Professed ‘Bible Scholar’ Makes Explosive Allegation About Jesus

On Oct. 19, self-professed Biblical scholar Joseph Atwill is planning to make public some very flammable allegations. At a day-long symposium called “Covert Messiah” in London, England, he’s set to unveil purported evidence that Roman aristocrats manufactured Jesus Christ – a claim that, if substantiated, would devalue the core of the Christian faith.

The only problem? Most Biblical experts disagree with the scholar’s pronouncements.

A press release announcing the purported new evidence claims that Atwill has discovered “ancient confessions” that purportedly prove that Romans invented Jesus Christ in the first century. He has long argued that the faith system was used as a political tool to control the masses — something he says is still going on today. ...

Sorry US, no, Elvis is no longer with us. Neither is Jim Morrison, Hitler didn't escape, and that wasn't Michael Jackson seen eating a burger at White Castle last weekend.

I agree with the posters below about just fighting the good fight when it comes to witnessing, no matter how bleak the situation may seem; no matter how long you have been speaking in circles. 20yrs with no perceivable results is a long time, but maybe he needs 20yrs and 1 day, or maybe God needs someone to work on a person for 20yrs, and then God breaks through to him, through a stranger the following day. My somewhat confusing point is that we should never give up, no matter how weary, frustrated, or pointless a situation may seem because we just don't know what God has planned behind the scenes or what puzzle pieces God has placed together as the result of your witnessing to either lead that person to him or someone you never even expected relative to him, someone who has overheard some conversations, etc. We just don't know what is going on in the spiritual realm as we continue to witness, pray, etc.

The Bible is very clear as to what the believer is to do in cases like this. It is only idle curiosity that would cause us to listen to such blasphamy.

"Go from the presence of a foolish man, when thou perceivest not in him the lips of knowledge." Proverbs 14:7

"To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them." Isaiah 8:20

Barry, my humble opinion, we are to reach out to a lost world but it is a duty to God, not any expectation on their part. I am required by God to learn to love my husband, love my children, be a keeper at home, have a gentle and quiet spirit... These are all regardless of anyone else's actions toward me or others. It is God's requirements of me. So is witnessing to those placed in our sphere's. God uses these encounters for His glory, to strengthen our faith and to act as witness to those with whom we speak. Speak on and pray, God may yet use you to your coworkers salvation if He chooses to remove the scales from his eyes. Not to be cliche, but, "Duty is ours. Results are God's"

1 Timothy 2:1-4 I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, [and] giving of thanks, be made for all men...For this [is] good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour; Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.

Barry from KY -- "I would love to hear the opinions of my brothers and sisters here on SA."

My opinion, for what it's worth, is that you should keep sharing the Gospel & praying for him. Of course, I'm only a 0.5 point Calvinist, so you may want to disregard my advice.

Atheists themselves don't think much of Mr Atwill as I recently found out after reading posts on a Facebook page set up by a secular humanist group. They state that the so called evidence produced by Atwill is totally false and easily disproved although many wished his claims were true. Leaves me wondering who is left to read his rubbish. Perhaps fellow Christians whose faith isn't as strong as it should be.

I found a bag today. Inside it was something that will totally revolutionize Christianity. The very foundations of belief will be shaken. The change will ripple like shockwaves across the world. I'll tell you what was in the bag ...

Well tb, that's it in a nutshell. I have a very good friend where I work. He is a determined atheist. We constantly argue and talk and we have done this for the last 20 years. I am still a disciple of Christ and he is still a determined atheist. My question is, did God not grant this friend of mind the gift of faith? Did he harden his heart towards anything and everything about the risen Savior? there are incidents in the bible where God has done this. I would love to hear the opinions of my brothers and sisters here on SA.
It is somewhat of a mystery, Barry, the deep workings of God in a sinner's heart, we never know what God is doing. Your friend may one day really turn around and come to believe on Christ and turn out a strong, believing Christian. I was blessed to read of your continuing friendship and witnessing. Obviously the Spirit leads you, so you may take heart, although if your friend is ever saved, it will be all of grace as Mr Spurgeon rightly writes, showing forth God's sovereignty yet man's responsibility. IMHO.

Barry, believe it or not, your atheist friend has much more faith than you. That much is required of all atheists in order to ignore the plain evidence right in front of their noses.

No person can earn their salvation no matter how hard or what kind of effort they make. Salvation would not be by grace if works of any kind were to be added to it.

The example of God demonstrating His hatred by hardening a sinful heart is the Pharaoh of the exodus. God hardens by exposing people to His truth and withholding His mercy. Sinful man will never, on his own, choose to believe the Truth of God and repent.

A full understanding of the sovereignty of God and the responsibility of man in salvation is beyond the comprehension of fallen man's finite mind. However, trusting God to do what is right as is consistent with His character and believing the Gospel are all that God requires for anyone to be saved.

from the summary for, Salvation is Up to God's Discretion.

The words "self-proclaimed" should tell us something right off the bat. Why is it that there are people all over the world that make totally outlandish claims about all sorts of things, but if someone does it, and says they're a christian, it's in the news or there's an article written about it. They're trying to male us seem like fools...
